1. I've been playing my 5's pretty much all the time over the last couple of years. Some people write charts specifically in the lower register,so I really need it for that, where as on other gigs I may never even touch the low B (or high C if I'm using the 6). I may shift position and play higher up the 'board on the 5,just for a change, but I never use the low B just because it's there. One of my favourite things to do,is to play a low D or C or whatever, maybe once or twice a night for just a few notes. That way it becomes noticable and adds weight. I hate when you see guys on a 5 and they spend all night camping out in the lowest register. If there is a guitar solo and the Bass player stays down low, there is a huge frequency gap between the two and it sounds so empty.
  2.
Am I too old to understand this? Freedoms? Are they a brand of trousers or trainers? Help!!!
I don't know. Maybe they are the limited edition Marcus Miller Levi's that were only available in Japan. ......and I have looked everywhere for
  3.
ah right,, i just read the website again there....it does seem awesome,,,apart from none of the songs on it are on my setlist haha
So you're not a jazzer then?
  4.
so what does this do exactly,,,,does it have the chord structure of songs in it or is it a programme for ou to do it yourself?
It's basically about 900 chord charts taken from the real books. There are no melodies written, but as a bass player you'll mostly be walking over the changes anyway,so the charts are really useful. It also allows you to transpose them into other keys. I think there is a function to write your own charts, but I've not looked into it. It's a really useful app,and is so much easier to carry around than a massive great stack of books.
  5. I love my Precision with flatwounds. It sounds great for recording-it sits in the mix really well. Nothing sounds like a P-Bass with flats.
  6.
YOU ARE JEALOUS OF HIS FREEDOMS!
Oh!!??!!?
  7.
I thought the first album with Teen Town on was amazing.
..Although technically,it was on his third solo album I think everyone probably knows my thoughts on Marcus already,so before this becomes a debate on whether he's ace or not,I just want to say that if you don't like him already, you probably still won't. But....hearing his band being augmented by the Monte Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra is just supremely cool, and adds a lot of weight and brings a new vibe to the music.
  8. The new Marcus Miller live album 'A Night in Monte Carlo' is brilliant. That is all.
  9. I've got a couple of endorsement deals at the moment, neither of which has required me to sign anything.I've had a couple of freebies, but mostly I get major discounts on the gear, which is great. It's also useful as the companies I'm with are not widely available in the UK at the moment so I deal direct with them and not their distributor, and I really like their products. I was recently offered a deal with a very well known amp company, but after discussion I chose to turn it down,as it meant dealing solely with the UK distributor and had no real benefit to me as a player, other than trade price-which is alright, but not enough for me to move away from my current rig. As far as getting them, the amp offer came through a conversation with the distributors, while the others came from me enquiring about their products-I didn't actually ask for any kind of endorsement. I've spoken to some companies and have been asked about things like record sales and who my band and manager is,whereas others have shown interest purely on my playing ability and the amount of work that I do.
  10. I don't have any pedals that I feel the need to keep on all pretty much all the time.Although lately I really like using the TC Nova Repeater for solos. I'm also digging the Emma DiscumBOBulator and the Boss OC-2.

    harsh basses

Without mentioning any bass in particular,it's worth trying something with EMG pickups. They have a lot of high end in them. Most decent preamps will also give you a good treble boost.
  12.
None of the covers bands around here seem to have websites. If they do they are never up to date.
That's why you'd be better off looking at the 'pro' bands and the tributes. Pretty much all of them have a website with their gig list on,and most play at similar venues around the country. If you want to stay local, just use the yellow pages.
  13.
The ibanez bass is insane! What a weird idea. Maybe I'm a bit old school ... imagine if u sat in at a jam session and borrowed that! Agghhh :-)
It's not that weird.Doug Wilkes was making basses similar to that in the '80's-only his were 4 strings(fretted E and A,fretless D and G).
  14. The Dethklok thing is real. On the tour,Bryan Beller is the live bass player while the cartoon band is playing on a big screen. Check them out- the live band is seriously good. The Ibanez is also for real-I started a thread on it a month or so ago.
  15. The last time I started a band from scratch, myself and the singer/guitarist spent a week looking in our old diaries at places we used to play, and then found new venues by looking at the websites of a bunch of bands(mostly tribute) and then calling up the venues. So basically,I'd suggest going on the websites of bands who are on a similar scene to yourself- most of them should have links to the venues sites so you can find the info you want pretty easily. If you can't get the info, just phone up places and ask questions. I filled my diary by doing this for a week solid-after that it was easy to get more.
  16.
I hate you too
No you don't
  17.
Primus's Here Come The Bastards, or Tommy the Cat.
'Tommy the Cat' is great fun to play-especially the 'Rhinoplasty' version with 'The Awakening' in the middle. I really like playing 'My Name is Mud' and 'Jerry was a Race Car Driver' too.
  18. Songs that I'm currently enjoying playing in gigs include..... Luther Vandross 'Never Too Much' Stevie Wonder 'I Wish' Duran Duran 'Rio' Charlie Parker 'Scrapple from the Apple' Miles Davis 'So What' There are actually very few songs that I don't enjoy playing on gigs. My favourite things to play when I'm at home are usually tunes by people like Marcus,Stanley,Janek,Cobham etc....Although lately I'm really enjoying playing all the old Primus stuff again.
  19. Although I'm mainly a Jazz Bass player,I have to say that for recording nothing sounds like a Precision with flatwounds. They just sit so well in the mix, whether they are played either fingerstyle or with a pick.
  20. Why hasn't this gone yet? It really is a lovely bass...I'd certainly be tempted if I wanted a Stingray. Have a cheeky bump on me.
  21.
I would have thought it difficult to slap with a neck pup cover....I sometimes use the palm of my right hand to mute the E string...not sure if I should mind
I've never had a problem with slapping with the cover on.If anything,I find it more comfortable. Check out Marcus Miller and Will Lee-The Pick up cover has never been a problem for them.
  22.
You won't name and shame them yet you give their exact location? Just name and shame.
I did name them.......... Apparently the humour got lost somewhere
  23. That's really cool. For me,Marcus is still the man.All three play great, but I dig the way that Marcus is totally holding the groove down, but still tears it up. I think one of the reasons that it all works-on the album too-is not only their musicianship, but the fact that they each have a very distinctive tone. They can all play without it sounding all muddy.
  24.
Bloody hell, that Sunlightsquare track is good. You kept that one quiet. Lend it to me...now!
I'll bring it in during the week. I'm liking those Steely Dan tracks. The whole DVD is really cool Don't know if these have been mentioned yet.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CVy5yOs0NSA And a nice slow groove....
