I think a lot of people's issues with someone like Jeff Berlin are not because he's famous, or because they don't think he's any good, but that he comes across in many posts as very didactic particularly regarding teaching/learning. He is a fantastic player and his teaching and musical approach no doubt work for some people who will succeed very well thanks to his help. But the most universally successful educators are the ones who realise that different people conceptualise problems in different ways, therefore alternative approaches are required for them to succeed. Jeff may well recognise that in 'real life' but online he does come across as taking a 'my way or the highway' attitude that is demonstrably wrong when applied in other educational arenas.
The thing is,like I said in an earlier post,is that to learn the actual 'rules' of music, there are not many ways to go about it. There are a lot of different ways to apply them, but there aren't many ways to actually learn or teach them. A C major chord always has the same 3 notes. The first ledger lune under the stave(in bass clef) is an E. There aren't that many ways of teaching this. You mention about different people conceptualising problems in different ways-yeah they do,but a lot of these concepts are applicable only after the facts have been learnt.
Most the drummers I know make the jokes about themselves, its not anyone else doing it, perhaps not only are they often great musicians but also have little ego in most cases
No one is adverse to a drummer joke (or any musician),but I just don't like the 'neanderthal' references. I don't like the term 'guitard' either. As far as ego-I don't know any player that doesn't have at least a little ego.

Left hand. Edit....Most of my muting when descending comes from my left hand, while ascending usually comes from the right hand.

I quite like the John Patitucci Ultimate Play Along books.
We had a new drummer join the band last night after being a knuckle dragger down for a few months.... what a revelation! [edit] I'd say we have struck gold with this guy... and good drummers, whilst they may still be Neanderthals, are worth their weight in gold. This guy is for keeps!
I'm sorry,it's great that you're locking with the new drummer, but I really have a problem with referring to them as 'Knuckle draggers' and 'Neanderthals',even if it is in jest. Like I've said many times before, many of the best musicians that I know are drummers.

Are some people not destined to play 5-strings?
Doddy replied to Evil Undead's topic in General Discussion
Has anyone else had this problem when trying to find a 5, or make the transition? What did you do? Just buy one and hope it grew on you, or stick with the 4's?
When I got my first 5 string- a Warwick Corvette-I just spent a lot of time with it and started to take it out on gigs pretty much straight away. There's nothing like jumping in at the deep end to force you to get it together. It just takes time to sit down and get used to the feel of the instrument. -
Because I meant it.
So why say it was aimed 'less directed at Jeff himself than the sycophants that frequent that site'? Either way, calling him 'an egotistical, self obsessed arsehole' wasn't the best post you've ever made.
They'll have done tiny gigs in their past, and believe me they probably still do. Plenty of immense players out there doing tiny club gigs to earn their rent and food cash. Just look at recent photos of them.
Exactly.
-
Maybe a little harsh, less directed at Jeff himself than the sycophants that frequent that site.
So why did you clearly direct it at Jeff?
I don't see why people who are famous shouldn't have the same thick skin everyone does, to be honest even if it is nice to have some 'big hitters' on the site unlike most bassists here they don't gig in the same situations I do therefore their advice would be less relevant to me and my playing.
They can still offer good advice though. Just because these guys are doing different gigs doesn't make it any less relevant to what you are doing. In fact,I think a lot of it is relevant no matter what level you are playing at. About the thick skinned thing-the problem is that there are some people that will constantly argue with someone no matter how many times that person explains themselves, because they are a well know player-More so than with other members.

Jeff Berlin speaks a lot of truth and sense. Do I agree with everything he says? No,but I agree with an awful lot of it. He's one of the most accomplished players on the instrument, and is obviously very confident in his ability, and this is often seen as arrogance. I've read interviews with players who i consider a lot poorer than Berlin, who have come across as being a lot more arrogant. I've only met him once and he was cool-he didn't come across as being full of himself at all,but he was confident in his methods.
I didn't keep up with the TB thread, but Jeff Berlin's whoel attitude seems a bit arrogant: "But some guys over there just talk the talk and don't have the musical experience to know that what they subscribe to in regards to music education doesn't work. But, they think that it does. " That just reads me to as: "You guys aren't famous musicians, you're wrong, I'm right because I'm Jeff Berlin. Deal with it."
He's right though. There are guys on Talkbass and on other music forums who will give advice that is flawed or just plain wrong-It's not about being famous or not. There are lots of bedroom players on all instruments who don't have any gigging or teaching experience but tell others what they should be doing with regard to learning, but will argue about it all day long.
There's a thousand and one ways to teach music. As long as you're teaching the actual correct information I don't think there's a wrong way. I know he's a Berklee alum so I imagine he was advocating a strict traditional academic music education, which is great for some people, but some people learn best other ways.
People do learn in different ways, but the problem is they don't always learn the 'actual correct information'. Just look at the number of players who don't know the notes on the fingerboard,or how to spell a C chord,or can't read. That is the kind of musical information that should be taught, and there really aren't many different ways to approach it. There are tons of different ways to apply it,but the actual learning of the 'facts' are pretty limited.

Go on then.......I'll help.
yep, but not the Fender, it was the original Gibson EB1 which was violin shaped, so he went for the cheaper copy.
Yeah I know about the EB1,but I seem to remember an old interview where he says that Fenders were too expensive, and that was why he went for the Hofner, because he wouldn't buy it on tick.
Time and money seam to be my only obstacles for lessons right now and who to go to, Staffs area? Doddy maybe?
If you want to have a chat about things, feel free to get in touch.

Cool. Proof that Marcus doesn't slap everything like some people think, but can just lay it down with the best of them without flash. Dean Brown on guitar too? That guy is awesome,if slightly manic.

I generally sit down and and adjust the strap so that the bass will be in the same position. Some I may have to lower a smidge, and some are a little higher, depending on body shape and/or scale length, but they are all within about an inch or so of each other.
-
it was too, it was a copy of the much more expensive Gibson.
Didn't McCartney get the Hofner because it was something like £40 compared to a Fender which was over £100?? Paul Westwood has played with soooo many people and on tons of albums and gigs and his main bass is a Hohner Steinberger copy. The guy from Los Lonely Boys uses a Hohner as well.

That's really cool. Is the pickup built into the ramp or is it piezo's?

I only used DR's once-Lo Riders-and snapped the A string after about a week. I'm no stranger to string breakages, but not that quick. The same thing happened with the B string on a set of Elites Nathan East series. I'm happy with using Ernie Balls right now, although I do like Fender and D'addario aswell. I had a good experience with the Hartke strings too.

I've been doing a load of gigs with just a Bass Pod and in ear monitors. It's great, but you really need some decent monitoring. For me,it's particularly useful when I've got gigs abroad as it's pretty much nothing to carry. It all fits in my suitcase and gigbag.
I paid £1,200 for mine, list price was £1,350 but it was a stock bass, I'm sure Doddy or niceguyhomer could give you a more realistic ball park figure
I got mine secondhand for under £900,so I'm no use to ask.

Janek Gwizdala used to knock about until he was given sh*t by a couple of people.

I think the new issue is pretty lame,to be honest.
I stumbled upon this on YouTube. I love hearing the islolated tracks. Great playing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CN6o5i_QZ_o&feature=fvst
That's cool...slightly simpler than what I though he played.

I really like Carons playing aswell, and was one of the first people I thought of. I can't be bothered to look for links right now,but Jaco,Gary Willis and Marcus all have great fretless tone.
