2.
I was in a small bar called 55 Bar in NYC in 2006 on holiday when a guy walked in and set up in the corner near the door to the lavvy with his band and started playing. The guitarist and his band completely blew me away! I hadn't heard anything that good since I saw Jeff Beck back in the 80's. I just assumed they were a really, really good bar band until I had a quick chat with the amazing young female drummer (Kim somebody or other). She was standing outside having a cigarette and I asked her where she was playing next and she said L.A. I asked who with and she said casually 'Beyonce'. It was then that I realised this wasn't some amazing bar band but obviously something a bit more special than that.
That'll be Kim Thompson. Check her out on Stern's album 'Who Let the Cats Out?'. She splits the drum chair with Dave Weckl.
 3. I'd be more inclined to write pizz.
 4.
I'm making a fair bit of progress actually, and REALLY enjoying it! Been playing around with stuff I'm nicking from Herb Alexander on 'Eleven', it's in 8/11, imaginative song title from Primus, eh?! Worthy of a jazzer, that
Nearly.... It's in 11/8 not 8/11.
 5. I can't remember what my first transcription was,but start off with something simple(especially as you've got no training). Try to find a simple melody to write out and then work out the chords. Then,as you get better, look for more difficult tunes or solos.
 6.
What you gonna teach 'im Doddy?
Haha Hopefully I'm going to get my ass kicked again.
 7.
But surely it's up to the customer (Pupil) Some folk don't want to learn notation and no real need. So why pay to learn something you don't want or need.
Because notes are the language of music and are the best way of covering information,in conjunction with the ear. If a student wants to learn songs and patterns they can do that on their own outside of their lessons, but if they are paying for music lessons, notation should be a part of it as it is for pretty much every other instrument.
 8.
I reckon it totally depends on what the pupil wants whether tabs are acceptable or not in lessons 15 years ago I had no interest in notation and paying someone to teach me just so I could play U2 covers would have been a waste of my money
Without derailing the thread....if someone is paying good money for lessons and the teacher leans heavily on tab,it is unacceptable. It's not really a case if if the pupil wants it or not-it's more a case of if you are paying for music education, tablature should be eliminated very quickly, otherwise the teacher is ultimately doing you a disservice.
 9. I just think that if you are doing music exams then learning the notes is an important part. It's wrong that you can get the highest grades and still have a major part of your music education missing.
 10. They are in Manchester on the 28th too. Got my tickets a couple of weeks ago,and all being well I should be having a lesson with Tom Kennedy
 11. I assume the as long as the pedal has a plug in the input then it is using the battery. I don't know if this is the case or not,but that's how I judge it.
 12.
Thanks Pete. Great little game that
If you go beyond the note finder game and go deeper into the YTS tread, there is lots of good information. It's a good thread.
What do all the grades actually involve? Likewise I've no idea where I am on that scale.
First of all,if you haven't done the grades, you're not on the scale. Despite playing and teaching grade 8 I would never say I am a grade 8 because I've not taken any exams. The grades are are fairly systematic approach to things like scales and arpeggios as well as technical aspects. Rockschool also has play along tracks. My main gripe with Rockschool is the inclusion of tablature. I believe that learning to read properly should be a basic requirement of the grades. To me,the inclusion of tab kind of defeats the object of studying the grades.
 13. Are you just playing them by running patterns,or do you actually know what you are playing and how the notes work together? Don't look at scales as technique practice. Learn the notes that are involved and play them all over the fingerboard and over every available octave. If you are just running patterns then you will get nothing out of them.
 14.
I have been playing over 20 years (still badly) and had a lesson last week with Doddy, Doddy is having lessons off someone else and maybe they are having lessons off someone else too? One thing is for sure if someone tells you they know it all and have nothing left to learn there will be a whiff of BS in the air
Big plus one. There is always more to learn.....Always. It doesn't matter if you've been playing weeks or years, music is so vast that you can study it for the rest of your life
 15. Offering a different perspective..... Maybe your tone isn't actually what you thought it was? Just because you've got good gear doesn't mean you'll sound good, especially when recorded. I know that happened to me. I remember reading an article with Will Lee,where he recorded the demos for the Billy Cobham album 'Spectrum',but wasn't hired for the actual album (it was Leland Sklar)because his tone sucked. At the time he was using a Precision.
 16. Hmmmmm,I'm not sure. The Bowie track is Jean Genie. Trevor Bolder goes to the B chord a bar early.
 17. Check out DiMarzio. Either the Model J,Ultra Jazz or Area J. They are all really good pickups and are are really good price too. I use the Ultra Jazz in my main Jazz Bass. They are really cool and dead quiet too,as they are a split humbucker.
 18. Sorry, but I'm going to be pedantic for a minute You know the company isn't called David Eden right? The company is called Eden and 'David' is the series of speaker cabs. There is no David Eden.
 19.
IMO the fundamental problem for anyone trying to make a living from (or just get paid for) playing, is that what you do for money other people do as a hobby and are prepared to do it for peanuts. I can't think of many other professions where that is the case (Whoring perhaps?).
Exactly-and a very valid point.
 20.
as an aside.. i'm liking this version of the chicken - mental bass bit in the middle!
Tom Kennedy is a frighteningly good player-check out the rest of his work with Weckl as well as his stuff with Mike Stern and Steps Ahead amongst others. Just as another aside,I'm hopefully having a lesson with Tom Kennedy in a few weeks time-just need to sort out the details
 21. I did chuckle when she says she's the singer and manager, yet she's 17 and doesn't yet have a band
 22.
Respect to Pete Academy for his restraint in his response to BigRedX's post. I'm sure on re-reading BigRedX regrets his post and will want to edit it.
Totally. Back to Jaco's tone(ignoring everything else)-Listening to that Michel Colombier track-which is killer-I think it is fair to say that you can hear where pretty much every fretless player took their tonal inspiration from. Obviously there are a few exceptions, but not that many. As far as his music is concerned,to me,his big band is where it's at. Just listen to 'The Birthday Concert'-great music, great writing and arranging, and superbly played.
 23.
I will write a long reply as it's hard to explain in brief why they help some drummers but not others. As for Lars and Joey using them, they get paid a lot of money for their endorsement. I bet if they were choosing in free will, they'd definitely be going elsewhere.
....and I will argue that it won't matter. The sticks will not help you if you suck, and they won't hinder you of you can play. Joey Jordison is using Pro Mark now by the way. Also Jim Keltner has been known to use Ahead sticks at times,at his own free well. And......Ahead sticks are Aluminium, not carbon.
 24. I totally dig Jaco's sound. In fact it was Jaco and Marcus that made me want a Jazz Bass initially.
 25.
I do find it absolutely crazy how a pub can get a band to travel miles and miles to play a gig (with their gear, which they share) and then not even give them petrol money DESPITE the pub having a decent crowd, selling lots of drinks and making money. This is pure cheek and disrespect. That being said, I do it and will continue to do it because when your playing originals you gotta put your back out to get noticed.
You've answered your own question. If a band is prepared 'to travel miles and miles to play a gig (with their gear, which they share) and then not even give them petrol money DESPITE the pub having a decent crowd, selling lots of drinks and making money' then that is why pubs and clubs will continue to do it. If you are unhappy with it,do something about it. Thinkhs are only the way they are because bands make it worse for themselves by accepting this protocol.
