7string

I've been playing a 7 string for a few years now and I'd like to pick up one particular point. As others have said, it's perfectly possible to play any bassline on an ERB which would normally be played on a 4 or 5 string bass. But if you have more strings, does that automatically dictate that you mustn't use it to play those kind of lines. I play and listen to quite a few different genres of music and if I'm working out something on my 7 string and then decide to jam with tracks on a CD, I won't necessarily switch from my 7 to a 4. Similarly a pianist wouldn't want less keys just because he/she isn't playing pieces which use the entire range of the piano. The ERB moniker only refers to the range of the instrument not to the music that should or shouldn't be played upon it.....

Is that a DeLano pickup ?? John showed me one when I picked up my Conklin. I thought it was so big & heavy that it should be stored in a lead box in case it alters the earth's magnetic field

I collected my Conklin GT7 a couple of weeks ago after it had been de-fretted and ramped by Mr. Shuker (and a great job he did too !!). The bass sounds better as a fretless than it ever did as a fretted. Just waiting to get copies of some photos which were done last week but it does exist (honest !!).

OK... I'm going to be brave and/or rude and ask how much it cost....?? I fully understand if you wish to keep this to yourself..

Spec sounds superb and as I have a growing interest in MIDI bass I'll be watching this with interest !! I've always loved birdseye maple, so that would be my choice !!

Like others, I started on a 4 then went to a 6 and then a 7... I was in a musical situation that I could use the range of a 7 string or a 6 string fretless and I really enjoyed it. I still love playing 4 string basses, in fact I have a soft spot for new country stuff which I'm lucky enough to have a '51 P reissue for.... I can understand why people look down on some ERB players. There are too many videos on YouTube which have players tapping out video game themes (and I really don't understand why!!) or music that seems to me as tapping for tappings sake. In my opinion, the music should dictate the technique and not the other way around. Great to see a balanced and considered debate here instead of the volleying of insults used elsewhere !!

Very cool !! I think there's an ACG 9 in the pipeline as well... 9 strings I think would be my limit. How are you going to amplify it ?? Are you going for a split bass & guitar setup ??

Very cool and I know from experience how good Jon's repair/modification work is. Makes you wonder why Fender doesn't just sell a bass with this sort of spec.....

Here's my contribution to this thread !! Mine's a Sei Offset Flamboyant 7 string [url="http://www.seibass.com"]www.seibass.com[/url] otherwise known as 'Jezebel'. I'd wanted a Sei for about 12 years before I was in a position to place the order. I'd met Martin Petersen at one of the music shows and, even though I'm just a regular Joe, he spent time to go over the designs and construction of his Sei basses. From that time, I've never played a bass that felt as good, or that was as well built as a Sei. Come 2006 and I placed the order, a year later the bass was ready for collection. The thru-neck is flamed maple & wenge and is topped with a birds-eye maple 'board with my signature laser-etched into a mother-of pearl block at the 12th fret. The core of the body is walnut, with a veneer of bolivar which has been dyed claret (which actually looks pinkish) separating it from the full facings of lacewood. Pink is my fiancee's favourite colour so it was great to incorporate that into the instrument. Electronics are passive and are just 1 custom Kent Armstrong humbucker, to 1 volume control. I have basses with active circuits, but I always leave the EQ flat anyway, so I didn't see the point in having any onboard tone shaping!! The bass has an XLR out in addition to the regular 1/4" as well as coil-tap button on the lower edge. Pull the volume pot and the purple LED's on the side of the neck light up. It makes a big difference not having the metal rails across the 'board !! Takes some time to get used to how it feels and how to play it in tune. It's definately worth the time & effort though...

I just had one of my basses de-fretted by John Shuker and I was over the moon with the quality of the work. Highly recommended.

I was in The Gallery last Friday, but unfortunately didn't have the time to have a look around at the 'builds in progress'... I can say though, that I miss really do miss my Sei and it's only been 6 days !!

Just had a look around their website as well... They've definately got something for everybody from 'violin' basses through to Les Paul look-alikes. A tempting budget brand, especially if you're thinking of a completely new type of bass 6 or 8 string... If only they did a 12...
