3. Hi All I'm reluctantly flogging my Vintage VJ96MR ICON Series Fretless Bass guitar (based on Jaco's Bass of Doom) as the need to build a replica 50's precision has got the better of me and I need to generate some dosh to enable me to start. It has an amazing sound which everyone comments on and is really nice to play, I had for a month or 2 some Rotosound Roundwounds on it but then changed to flats, so there is a few marks on the fretboard which you can only see at the right angle but they have not penetrated the wood (you can see in the photo of the fretboard). Specs Body: Eastern Poplar Neck: Hard Maple Bolt On Fingerboard: Rosewood Scale: 34"/864mm Frets: Fretless Neck Inlays: Pearloid Dot Tuners: Wilkinson® WJBL200 Bridge: Wilkinson® Pickups: Wilkinson® JB x 2 (M) WJB00, ( WJB800 Controls: 1 x Volume/ 1 x Tone The dings and scratches on this bass are all part of the distressing and no extra ones added by me! Puting up for £190 and I would prefer collection from Portsmouth as I would like the buyer to see it and play it before buying, but would be willing to post (via courier service) at extra cost. Cheers Tony
4. Here's my ultimate rrrrrrrrrrrrrrr she so nice, well to me anyway )
5. I think Jaco does a good chromatic scale exercise on his video, I'll dig it out and let you know how he does it.
6. Welcome Zomnius - have fun
7. Yep, hope all works out well for you especially for your other half.
8.
As everybody already said, Squiers or Farida, but... if you want a fretless pretend Jaco on the cheap, there is this: http://www.guitarmag...6mrjp-fretless/
I have one of these and they are amazing, lovely to play and everyone that hears it, comments on what a great sound it has. The "Out of the box" action is a little high for a fretless but that probably adds to the sound. These can be bought used on flea bay for around £175
9. Good Luck and you'll have lots of messy fun Will keep looking out for your progress posts, remember Halfords do cheap paint! Perhaps even match it to the colour of your car!
10.
I'd like to advance but am beginning to think that I'm a bit 'theory dyslexic', I'm not thick, but no matter what I read it doesn't seem to sink in to any degree. At least not in any way that is actually useful anyway.
Welcome Jason! I'm exactly the same as you in regards to learning theory, but I'm reading the Popular Music Theory series of books and they have really helped me. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Popular-Music-Theory-Grade-One/dp/1898466416/ref=pd_sim_b_6 there are 8 grades and you can even take exams on them if you wish. Can also relate to not having the time to gig due to young family, but i try to get them involved with learning about music etc. Anyhow, have fun, this is a really great site made up with wonderful people and bags of knowledge. Cheers
11.
Oh yepmop....tried the guys you suggested..phoned them 3 times...sent an email that was ignored for about a week..then got a "did you get our email" email...replied a further two times and nothing. I am going to try them again tomorrow on the phone and then move on.
That's a real shame, I've had good comms with them in the past, emails aren't in your spam folder? Hope you get sorted soon and get your bass finished. Cheers
12. Welcome from across the pond - have fun!
13. Welcome Rammstein. Have to agree, BrittleDick was a very underrated bass player and I'm also a big Tull fan. Basschat is a great place to be and you'll have fun. Cheers
14.
hoping the decals turn up soon so I can get it finished.
The decal bit is always scary to me, £10 a shot and the slightest crease and ya buggered. I probably go over the top with lacquer coats on the decal, but always seem to get a good finish.
15. [sup][sup]Very nice indeed, What pups did you use?[/sup][/sup]
16. Fantastic job on those tuners, oh to have the right woodworking equipment.
17. Really Nice, well done! Does the candy orange almost boarder on looking copper coloured?
18. Hi Mystic and welcome to England and Bass Chat. You'll have to get you other half back into playing music again, it can be very therapeutic. My 9 year old son started to learn guitar at school and it's re-kindled my need play again (after not touching a bass for 31 years) and it's make a difference to my life. I'm not in a band (well I practicing with some work friends to do a 1 off gig at our works party) but love playing after work to cds and my son is showing all the hallmarks of being a bassist rather than a 6 string guitarist as he naturally plays the melodies in songs and is quite good at it, I'll let him find his way to the light . Anyhow have fun! By the way liked you site. Cheers

20. Many Thanks for the info Mr Fingers this will be very useful! Much appreciated
21. I'm really getting to like the look of these early 50s P-Basses, I use to hate the look but over the years I've mellowed and really taken to them. I'm concidering building one from bits (it will probably take me over a year due to the cost) but need to know where I can obtain the "Spec" of them, mainly for the original colours they were available in and what decals were used. Short of buying a Fender book, are there any resourses on the net where i can get this info? Thanks
22. Took it out to a band practice session and all was good apart from the pickup mounting screws kept popping out and I think it's down to the wrong springs were sent with the pickups and I've only ever seen these types used with 6 string humbucker pickups. The springs are tapered and this maybe why the Pups tilt to one side all the time (I've also put the springs on both ways and it still happens). I Have now ordered new screws and springs from Papa Ds, so hopefully this will cure that problem. I'm waiting for some Chinese chop sticks to arrive so I can use them to pug the neck holes prior to the re-drill, It's just a brainwave i had to negate drilling the holes larger to plug, I'll probably be proved wrong but hey at least I'll know not to listen to my brain next time Cheers
