I have had sets of extra slinky (45-95) cobalt flats on two vintage pro thunderbirds for at least a couple of years and they're still in perfect condition on both basses. I use fast fret or Dunlop ultraglide 65 string conditioner regularly, so if the issue isn't isolated to specific batches, that *might* be the answer to prevent corrosion appearing.
