They were widely available in the , in those days, 'catalogues' for home shopping, where you could by kettles, shirts, teas-maids, mirrors and all sorts of tat. Mine came from a Freeman's catalogue, cost around £40 and was paid-up at ten shillings a month or something like that (50p!) I added the worst 'bass amplifier' I have ever seen - a Hawk 15 - and immediately became a rock-god at school. Here it is in action almost 50 years ago.

At one silly point, I had 6 fretless basses - lovely to look at and noodle upon, but I wouldn't have found much in our set to play them on. Sold two fivers, one sixer and a four and now have only two fivers left. There are many times I doubt my sanity.

Such a shame. Always loved the sound of things he was involved in. Would have thought that something akin to Parkinson's would have been noticed, and 'dealt with' or no concert would have gone ahead. I wonder if a stroke of some kind isn't behind the scenario you describe? Here's hoping things improve for him, whatever. His music has made millions happy.
