So, a question for those Basschatters who have made a YouTube bass video. Have you received any offers of musical work or been asked to join a band as a result of it?
He might not be a basschatter, but it looks like the Marlowe DK guy has done ok for himself...considering he has his own Sandberg signature series bass. Re the theme this thread has taken on - each to their own....like it, don't like it...life's too short.
Is that 'selling'? Difficult to know. New word for every circumstance on a daily basis these days. I'm so old, you see.
Yes selling AFAIK, e.g. 'January Blow Out'
Hey Paddy, I just measured the nut on my AV '62 P & it's 1.765" or 44.83mm, so a little over the stated 1&3/4" even! Cheerz, John
Hi John! Interesting that the stated figures aren't even quite right. I just thought it looked a bit strange to not see the usual 1.75, 1.625, 1.5 etc I really like the look of all the Precisions, but the Sonic Blue really does it for me. It's great to see them trying to move more towards the vintage correct specs...the clay dots being a welcome touch. I do remember a fellow BC'er telling me that the original AVRI's were based off vintage basses they bought, whereas the JV's were built of the blue prints! I suppose there were so many variations back in the day it might be hard to say what was standard. I also saw that Thomann have slightly reduced the prices on the current AVRI's...might be a good time to nab one of them too.
I still want to know if the P comes with the covers already fitted. From the description in the specs it looks as if they are already screwed on. Mind you, it's all academic as I can't afford one anyway. However, who knows what the future may bring.
Yeah according to the description in looks like they're already mounted. Although it wouldn't bother me, I'd imagine a lot of people might not like the bridge cover and therefore might not like the 2 holes if they do remove it.
Better than that, they're said to be period correct - Custom Shop one's were merely generic. Oh yes! It’s mentioned on a separate page overviewing the series, to quote: “The finishes on most new American Vintage guitars and basses consist of three coats: sealer, color and a topcoat, all of which are 100-percent nitrocellulose lacquer and are hence quite thin. This is a vintage-style finish treatment that lets an instrument "breathe" with a more natural resonance since it doesn't "constrain" the instrument's body as much as thicker and more confining modern finishes.” Here: http://www.fender.com/en-GB/series/american-vintage/#
Cool..thanks for the link. Did anyone notice the ever so slightly odd nut width sizes on both Precisions? Is that period-correct too? I still think it's a shame the '57 and '62 are gone.
-
I really like the look of the Precisions. No mention of a nitro finish in the specs though. The 57 and 62 seem to be taken off the site which is a shame IMO. They've hardly stopped them after 30 years have they?

Your Musical Development since joining Basschat?
pobrien_ie replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
I fully agree. I've been playing bass for over 14 years, and I've learnt more in my short time on BC. Biggest achievement was to start to learn to read notation. I've no reason whatsover to learn except for my own personal development. Can safely say I wouldn't have bothered but for the discussions I've seen here. While I don't agree with everything that's said here, BC never seems to descend into the slagging matches that you see elsewhere. -
..oh....apart from me putting it here that is!
I predict that every bass nominated on the 'ugliest' thread will, eventually, also get a mention here, and vice-versa.
..but surely this won't make it here

D'Addario Chromes - the flats for people who don't like flats!

Yeah I'm sold on them as well - converted about 6/7 months ago. You can get them for pretty cheap from the US too! -

It should be the 1-5/8" (41.3mm) nut width with a 7.25 radius. It's a pretty comfortable neck IMO. -

Oh and if it helps the bass was the standard (basswood bodied) 57RI. -
It seems like a fairly common addition, whatever it is. There's even a neck for sale on here with the same letters at the end of the number. http://basschat.co.uk/topic/194662-fender-jap-57-ri-maple-neck-fender-tuners/
That's actually my old neck. I read somewhere that DGF were initials but that seems a bit far fetched. -
That's what I reckon. Poets and musicians need struggle to write their best material. Money ruins everything. Unless they can find a way to police the internet properly very soon, noone will be paying for music or video within a couple of generations.
I don't know if I'd agree with that. Surely a much larger percentage of people are paying for downloading music than in the days of Napster. I would have thought that recent high profile cases would further scare people to go the legal route. Also the likes of Netflix are making legal downloading of movies and tv programmes much more common place. Personally I couldn't really be bothered downloading music via the likes of itunes etc. I might be a bit old fashioned, but I still generally opt for the cd which will force me to listen to the whole album. Most of the bands I like, such as Pearl Jam, provide most of their stuff on their own website. Interestingly enough, I recall Pearl Jam as being one of the few bands who had no issue with Napster, Metallica being one of the main opponents of Napster. I think that says it all. When your music is art the financial side of things is less important.

Sorry to all the Macca fans, but the Hofner Violin Bass and all it's imitators are pretty ugly IMO.

Great performance! Lot's more included with the Standing in the Shadows of Motown book. A great read for anyone with even a passing interest in Jamerson / The Funk Brothers / Motown.

Sorry to hear that, but I know what you mean. Hope you get around to it at some point.

Thanks Gary! Not gigged it yet. I'm currently retired (due to wife, small kids, job(s) and phd study), so it might not see proper action for a good while yet! It sounds and feels just right for me, so very happy with it. How's your next project going?

RIP - The Rocker -
This one was put on hold for a while after I had a bit of a change of heart in the direction I was going. I had the chance to buy a Road Worn P Bass recently, so I decided to use the neck, pickguard and tuners for this project. It's a little bit more period correct (1.75" nut width) than the MIJ neck I was going to use. Anyway, it turned out to be one of the most comfortable necks I've ever played. I know it's a cliche, but they really do have a great 'worn-in' feel. Not to everyone's taste, definitely the stupid cigarette burn , but I like a light bit of aging. Everything else is as above; Highway One body with nitro finish, '57 repro capacitor, cloth wiring etc. The only thing I need to replace is the nut (see pic!). After a bit of a mishap with La Bella flats I ended up breaking the nut at the G string. It's now strung with Chromes It's sounds great, at least to me. It's a nice addition to my recent '62 project, which thanks to the road worn body, is also currently getting a facelift. I actually have the sheet music in tab (and notation I think) from Guitar World's Bass magazine if that's any help. I could scan and forward to you. I think it even gives the left hand fingering for the main bridge part.

Cool. I ask as I have Chromes on one bass and La Bellas on another, and although I prefer the sound of the La Bellas I actually find them stiffer/harder to play! I've only had them on a couple of weeks, so maybe I'll get used to them yet. I definitely agree with you on the Rotosounds...they don't do it for me on this comparison. -

Best comparison video I've seen yet. Thanks for posting. As a matter of interest, which set do you prefer? -
Thank you guys and all that is good advice (Im trying it out now) any decent you tube links? ( I know its cheating!!)
Try basscamera.com. I saw it before, and while I don't think it's 100%, it's a good start. Will you be playing with a horn section or guitars? Important to make sure you're all playing the same bit. Although not necessary to learn completely, for me, the last chorus is where it get's really hair!
