    DR Strings

ive used DRS for the last 25 years (on and off). i started on High beams then went to sunbeams, depending on what basses i was using at the time! High beams/suns are steel/nickel versions of the same string, which has a round core and is very pliant and "bendable" with a great loose feel. The High beams have plenty of bass and lots of crisp treble and a definite mid scoop and are lovely for slap and modern funky R&B/Gospel tones, the Sunbeams are a lot warmer and deeper but still have a lovely clarity , the Fat beams are high beams with more bass so are a good middle ground between the two (they sound like High beams that have been played for a few weeks). To add to the roster the colored/coated strings are nickel plated steel like the sunbeams and have a very warm tone with a lot less treble than the sunbeams! they also do "Quantum Nickel" which is supposed to sound like steel but they still arnt as bright as high beams. i currently use High beams on my basses as they've become part of my tone and i feel any excessive brightness can be tamed, but a dull lifeless string cant be brightened. I love DR but ive had a few duff sets over the last couple of years and my emailed to DR on the subject were ignored!!!!! not something they built their reputation on, and i would go to another brand , but every time i do! they dont sound as good to me ( i really wanted to like dunlop superbrights but meh!!) Ive not gone into Lo riders as i tried them once and hated them
  2. And im massively grateful Mick you are a complete star! I can't wait to get my hands on it. That GS looks nice! I think it was the evolution of the first 5 string I ever had back in 1996 a Yamaha BBN5 cracking bass for the money, I quickly replaced it with a BBNE1 though 😁
  3. Well Yogi bears always trying to Nick it!!! 😂
  4. Lol! You know I like that orange 414!! But don't worry I'm sure you'll end up with this one eventually 😂 My thanks to you all gentleman! Especially Mick! Who is doing me a very massive favour 😁
  5. Pm'd as ive just bought this 😁
  6. Whoops missed off!! Amended 😁
  7. So having a mad moment as im not playing at the moment and summers coming so up for a tentative sale is my Iron Ether Subterranea! I waited ages for one of these to come up and I love it, but it isn't getting used! probably one of the coolest synth pedals ever made. These are made in very small batches by Iron Ether and each pedal is uniquely finished (no two are The same) The Subterranea offers two synth voices: uni-Synth (unison) and octo-Synth (8va down), along with three waveforms (saw, narrow, square) for each voice. It also includes an Octave down with a filter knob to that changes the frequency of a low-pass on the output of the Octave voice. There is also a "clean" volume knob to blend in the clean signal. It sounds just like an OC2 when used as a standalone octave, but with better tracking and more flexibility, so you've a full functioning OC2 with six synth voices which you can blend to make something trusty unique! Just add a filter of your choice for some incredible synth tones! No need to add fuzz with this one 😁 It is in excellent condition except for a couple of really tiny bits of missing paint but as it's a distressed looking pedal by design, you really can't tell. I'm looking for £160 including UK delivery, I may consider posting abroad if the buyer has decent feedback and for a bit more toward postage. I'll get some more pics up when I can!
  8. I recently got an identical one to this and can honestly say it's one of the finest basses I've played (and I've owned many high end 5's) an absolute bargain. I liked it so much I want a 4 string version 😁
  9. For me the best tracking definately the EBS octabass, closely followed by the MXR BOD (great tone too,but yes it makes a funny gurgling sound). I found the octamiser to have the worst tracking (although slightly better than the OC2) but what a great tone! The OC3 tracked very well as its digital but I found the tone quite bland. The cog T65/16 tracks brilliantly, I really didn't notice any difference in tracking from the MXR. The IE Subterraneana tracks fairly well too! I've never tried the 3 leaf but it's on the list. Still for me EBS octabass is the dogs dangles 😁

  11. Yeah the missing surrounds definately need replacing!! I believe the reflex were similar to EMG (they were noted for having a great slap tone) id want to put originals back! @ Daz Looking at the knobs am I to assume that the controls are vol/vol tone as at some point it would have a vol/tone and a toggle switch? Fantastic bass (ebony board too)
  12. Yeah I'd say that clears up the pickup surrounds going missing! 😁
  13. That bottom feeder is a great little filter! Very similar to the Discumbobulator! I assume the discumbob is set to a reverse sweep, for a different sound?
  14. Can't believe this is still here!! If I had the cash is snap it up 😁
  15. I love this!!! Is the bass black underneath the print wrap?? Ive wanted one if these since i was a kid! 😁
  16. What did you do with the Lunar?😉
  17. Lol!! I know, all 3 from you! You're my pusherman 😂 they sound fantastic though. Trying to decide whether to use the Scrutator in LP or BP mode! I quite liked the BP setting as its cleaner and I'm getting plenty bottom from the T65.
  18. Well after many months of tweaking and buying and selling I'm very happy with my current setup in the following signal chain! MXR Bass Envelope Filter 3 Leaf Pwnzor compressor Iron Ether Subterranea Cog Custom T65 octave (with the following in its loop, in order to run the octave in parallel) Iron Ether Oxide fuzz Malekko Scrutator (bit/sample/filter) Mooer Sweeper Then into! Cog Custom Grand Tarkin Fuzz Source Audio Manta Filter MXR Bass Chorus Deluxe MXR EVH Phase 90 TC Iron Curtain Noise gate Plenty of synthy goodness and all powered with a Cioks Dc5 😁 For once in not gassing too much for anything else! (Nose getting bigger)
  19. I had the head for a while and was incredibly impressed with the tone! It does everything from clean dizzy HiFi to growly rock and tons of power!! I only got rid as i was worried it may blow my berg (2×10) cab! (I went back to EBS but I miss the GK power) the price for that and the cab is fantastic, but the online consensus is that head is best used with 2x 4x10s. I loved it and would have one again 😁
  20. Nice!!! I definately see a custom tort guard and an East uni pre in my yamahas future! Strangely for me, I've not had a desire to muck about with the pickups!! Hmm Nordstrand blades???
  21. He can sell me his NE2 to me then!! I've got a serious horn for one of those 😉
  22. Lol I shoukd have read the whole thread!
  23. It's Daphne Blue! 😁
  24. I've just taken delivery of a Yamaha BB1025X! And it's an absolutely fantastic bass. I've owned lots of really expensive boutique 5 strings over the years costing three/four times what I paid for the Yammy, and it's on par with most of them! Fantastic neck. Luckily there's one for sale on the Facebook bass forums! (I think the guy may have it up on here too)
  25. Hi Gents Well I got an MXR BEF yesterday and i absolutely love it! MASSIVE!!! Problem though! When i had my Discumbobulator it made a constant high pitched whistling noise when placed near my CIOKS D5 power supply! I moved it and it was fine. I had a reshuffle and moved it and it started whistling again, but this time wherever I put it. In my frustration I sold it (when I plugged it in off board through a one spot the problem went away) well the MXR does the same thing argh!! 😠 I've spent all evening putting it on different parts of the board as far away from the cioks as i can/powering it on its own with one isolated power lead and it still whistles!!! I took it off board but powered it with a lead from the cioks (which was powering other pedals) and the whistling stopped!! Only the analogue filters do this! I've had no bother with my (Digital) Manta (which is powered on a different power outlet I've completely broken up my board now, to test every lead/other pedal etc to try and isolate the problem,as I really don't want to lose this filter. My leads are high quality van Damme/sommer with Hicon jacks, but I'm wondering if a cables gone but only the analogue filters pick up the noise. If anyone has any ideas I'd love to know!! Cheers 😁
