2. I use earplugs when singing because it blots out some of the noise but boosts my own voice in my head.
3. Interesting. Does this happen in speech or just singing? Also can you go the other way and soften your r further and tie the last letter of the previous word onto it? Example: Instead of "Losing my religion" sing "losing my_yeligion." Might not help, but nothing ventured
4. I'm not in the habit of mudslinging and I have not made any personal criticisms. I also made it explicit that I didn't want people to express satisfaction about anyone's early demise. A quick readthrough shows that no one has done so. I am not sure that it is in bad taste to consider how someone's legacy is affected by an early death. Obituary writers do it all the time.
5. If Mr Dunky had done the search himself, I would have never discovered this gem of a fact.
6. @Elephant. Do others notice or comment on it when you mispronounce R? A good many singers alter their pronunciation of some letters and sounds to avoid excessive fricatives, plosives, etc.
7. I have to take issue with Dad's interpretation. No one is suggesting that people should have died earlier and as he has already made clear that this thread is, in his opinion, pointless. If one deems it pointless, then why not leave it alone so that those who are enjoying it can do so without the criticism?
8. The Gallaghers and others are a triumph of enthusiasm over skill. Still it shows that enthusiasm will carry you a fair way and music would be rather one dimensional if we all sounded like Peter Autry or Charlotte Church.
9. I bet a lot of 'non-singers' here can sing better than the early Mark Knopfler. Make the songs fit what you can do and you're halfway there.
10. It really is just practice and self-belief. I discovered that I could sing, after decades of thinking that I couldn't when I retrained as a Primary School teacher and had to give music lessons to a class of four and five year olds. Their unwavering belief and total lack of critical faculty in me combined with the fact that I HAD to do it all year in class and in assemblies in front if colleagues and parents. It was a smallish step from there to the microphone. There are songs that I can't play and sing because the rhythms clash too much. Others, like the Live Killers version of We Will Rock You, are huge fun to play and sing.
11. I like quite a lot of Paul McCartney songs. Come to think of it, I don't think that writing middle-off the road music is in and of itself a bad thing. The things we said today, Live and let die, Yesterday and Eleanor Rigby are all top flight songs for me, but d.s.f.d.f.
12. The Freddie Mercury one... I pondered this long and hard as I couldn't decide if his overthetopness would carry him through to 'aging queen / national treasure' status without any lessening of his regard in between. In general, I think any performer who doesn't take him/her self too seriously (at least in public) is automatically safe.
13. I can hear the ice cracking under Tom's feet.... The official definition of sexism is "The unwarranted drawing of attention to a person's gender or the objectification of a person by virtue of their gender." So, Ms Innie is technically being sexist by objectifying Uffe. The question of whether a third party can draw offence from such a statement is trickier as one of these two criteria need to be met: 1. Would a reasonable person who notices the remark be offended? 2. Does the remark encourage the objectification of the peer group's members? These are harder to answer as a consideration of perceived power imbalance is needed and I can't be bothered because Friday is chores day.
14. I just heard a lovely nostalgic interview with Ronnie Spector on Radio 4. The bare bones of it are here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-34733727 If you want to hear it, use BBC iplayer on Today Programme and aim for 2h20 in and/or 8.20am. The bit about John Lennon trying to get her into bed is priceless.
15.
Return to shop with the issue, you should still be in warranty! It's worth at least speaking to the shop and an independent luthier.
James is right but it doesn't need to be within warranty, it is not of merchantable quality or fit for purpose and is covered by the Sale of Goods Act.
16. Woah! That website is beyond mental. I'm a bit bonkers, but that is terrifying.
17. I've managed to avoid reading many musician interviews in the last 30 years and so am very happy in my ignorance.
18. ...and after a late start, JapanAxe takes the lead!
19. I was undecided until I saw the paw prints on the fretboard. I like it!
20.
The "alimentary canal" is where you can often find greatness!
Fair point, although it is often full of s.... too. I read a review of a recent David Bowie album a few years ago where the reviewer said that he didn't much like it but still respected Bowie for not resting on his laurels and still making new music.
21. ...and just to avoid confusion, no one (hopefully) is saying that it is a good thing that these people died short of their three score and ten.
22. I don't think that I wrote exactly what I meant. It would have been better to say that the qualifications are that they were acknowledged as great for their own achievements but were showing signs of disappearing up their own alimentary canal which would turn people off them. Example: So if Bono had died post Under a Blood Red Sky he would be held in much higher esteem than he is today. And yes, this is inevitably highly subjective but I know we are all grown ups and won't sink to personal jibes..... Chris.... I definitely second the John Lennon nomination.
23. This is a companion thread to the excellent one "I'd like them if it wasn't for..." I often wonder about musicians, singers, etc. whose reputations are preserved or enhanced by their untimely demise. So I wonder who you think has made it into the pantheon of greats via an early grave when they showed signs of becoming overly self-important and excessively pretentious while still with us. My nomination: Jimi Hendrix.
24. @Graham It might be, I don't know I'm afraid. I am not knowledgeable about such things.
