1. Look at the pics carefully - it's appears to be a bit more abused than he likes to make out. G.
2. One bloke got in touch (not via this site, but from an ad I had outwith). We met at a pub, chewed the fat, got on famously, he emailed me saying he liked my music page & would be in touch, then promptly disappeared. I'll play bass, fretless, 6 string guitar (I'm a pretty decent rhythm guitarist but no great soloist), 12 string - hell, I can even sing a bit - have gear, transport & will travel!! What's not to like!!! Anyway. Def. miss the gigging. G.
3. I have a few - the Hohner B Bass V is my narrowest neck, and my Peavey Cirrus BXP & my OLP Stingray come close after, although the OLP neck is clubby (deep back to front). My B Bass is great (probably because of the Joe Barden pups & the John East U-Retro in it). G.
4. Still looking!!! G.
5. I too had the amp-part of these. Possibly the best sounding bass amp I ever heard. The Bi-Amping possibilities with this are excellent. Let it go as I needed domething with a bit more headroom. G.
6. I use a British-built (redface) MAG400. It seems the UK built item is 485W@4 Ohms, but there is a Far-Eastern built model (Whiteface) which is 400W@4 Ohms and the early models were inconsistent. The MAG400UK is a wee bit of a monster for its rating & cost. G.
7. Let me know when you are going to be there & I'll see if I can get there too. G.
8. Good job well done - I love a bit of applied know-how!! G.
9. I'd toddle along to that..... G.
10. Right, my mate from years ago in my first band (see 'Cheesy Band Promo Pics thread - 1964) has taken over and is running 'The Horse & Hounds' Hotel at Bonchester Bridge some miles South-West of Jedburgh in the Borders. He's looking to do a Country & Western night, a Rhythm & Blues night, and a Rock & Roll night and probably an Open Mike night once per month. All artists in the North are welcome to get in touch. If you are interested, then get in touch with me at [email protected] (pass it around) and I'll forward to him. Between you & him thereafter. He's still putting the hotel to rights, so wants me to do it this way in the first instance. Duos, trios and all the rest. He's keen to make this a success, so roll up! Geoff
11.
So you weren't a bassist back then
Absolutely correct!!! G.
12. 1964........ I'm the good-looking one!!!! G.
13. Try turning up the master and turning down the gain. G.
14. I have a 4 string Schaller 3D in chrome lying in the drawer. If you think it'd do, PM me. Geoff
15. Well, I don't know about being too old...... I'm 63 & still rockin'. Been playing bass 6 years now & got a bundle of compliments at the Open Night last Thursday, also might be auditioning for a funk-style band in the near future. Keep rockin', Dude & don't let the Bastards grind you down!!! Geoff
16. Glad to have been of help. G.
17. The Guitar Shop at Ibstock did some work for me and it was well done & inexpensive. G.
18. Get an old (or buy a new) mouse mat & cut out appropriate shapes for pickup concerned. Use more than one level if necessary & screw down to taste. G.
I have a CIJ 57' reisussue P The pickup is mounted hard to the body not the plate and has these wedges underneath that make sure its high enough. Well I changed the P/up to a Seymour duncan and need the wedge things. They cannot be removed from the existing pickup and perhaps I'm being stupid but I can't find them anywhere online... I could make them I suppose but my woodwork/manufacturing skills are poor at best. If anyone has a set, knows where I can buy a set or heck even make me a set let me know!
19. Pups are a P in a soapbar neck, series/parallel switchable; a double-bobbin side-by-side humbucker in bridge, series/parallel switchable. Bridge in series can get really burpy. Neck in parallel for bouncy old rock. Vol knob is push/pull for in/out of phase. Centre knob is passive treble roll-off (active or passive) and 3rd knob is the peculiar Westone pre (anti-clockwise bass boost, clockwise mids boost). Normal pickup selector. Series/parallel mini switch, active/passive mini switch. 18V electrics. G.
20. Westone Thunder III Mk2 Fretless. G.
21. I have a 5-band parametric equaliser in the FX loop. It also has a High bandpass & Low bandpass filters. It have the High at 30Hz and the Low around 8Kz. Switching the filters out has a noticable effect on the clarity of the bottom end. G.
22.
Not meaning to hijack this thread... but what really got my goat a while back was that people were being lambasted for expressing their opinions on Barefaced cabs, calling it 'hype'. I suspect some of posts were included in that. Apparently, I wasn't allowed to say how much I loved the Big One or that it kicked the poop out of my Ampeg 410 hlf. It all got very humpty. People saying 'stop the hype' and posts from 'honest men' who can't wait to give their 'honest opinions'. Mostly irritable thoughts that might have been better directed at Alex direct. He took a bit of a public kicking and hasn't been seen here much since. And I think the site is worse off for that.
+1 There certainly was a perception of a 'let's jump on Alex's head' movement. I felt a bit of discomfort over its being aired openly over the forum when the points could have been settled privately. I too feel the forum is the poorer without Alex's input. G.
23. What ^he said! G.
24. Are you sure it's nothing that putting an extra few turns of A string onto the tuning post won't fix? Fender P & J style basses are notorious for having little or no break angle on the A unless you leave an extra bit of length and put a few extra turns on the peg. Another way is to put on an extra string tree, but that's messy, but I think you may still have the same problem after a new nut. G.
