TRADE AGREED with someone for a bass swap. Due to a complete courier cock-up and through no fault of it's own, up for sale again is this double P Fender Precision bitsa. Was active but now converted to passive with a VVT control setup. I think it simply sounds better this way. I suspect I could split it and sell the parts for more but this bass works so well as a whole I would prefer to keep it together. I've been fiddling and building P bass inspired basses for a while and this is pretty much my ultimate P bass. However, I'm just finding that I'm needing different sounds for the music I'm involved with currently. So, its a P bass, with ...... - A new Fender-licenced Mighty Mite Jazz neck, with new Wilkinson tuners, Genuine Fender decal. - Body is two-piece swamp ash, with a light antique pine stain to enhance the grain. Finished with a Danish oil and wax finish. Immaculate. Small battery cavity on the rear. - extra P pickup. neck pickup is a Duncan SPB-3 in the standard Fender P spot, bridge pickup is a Wilkinson one. - Control cavity is routed larger to accommodate extra electronics, with battery compartment on the rear should you want to fit a preamp. - MIA Fender neck plate - custom tort scratchplate. - Bridge is a very solid MIJ Matsumoku-made Fender-type. - Controls are VVT. Mini-toggles are now just for show !! This bass is immaculate. The only marks of any note at all are a couple of very, very minor marks on the end of the headstock. The bridge is 30 years old but still in great condition. Really beautiful looking bass, and plays as good as it looks. Every string gives a punchy and full tone. A very grunty, resonant bass indeed. No weak E strings here ! Completely knocks the spots off any squire or MIM Fender IMO. A huge bargain IMO at £235 posted to you in a hardcase within mainland UK. Poss P/Ex for Ibanez SR505, or other 5 string with tight string spacing, or try me with any 4 string bass offer. Soundclips of the bass. All recorded straight through a flat mixer into my computer's soundcard. No EQ, no compression, no nothing. First, comparing pickups..... neck pickup, then bridge pickup, then two different pickup blends. https://soundcloud.com/alanbridges/double-p-passive Then demonstrating the tonal range of the tone control . https://soundcloud.com/alanbridges/douple-p-passive-tone-control

can someone please explain to me why.........
hamfist replied to Horizontalste's topic in Amps and Cabs
Yup, compression. Peaks are no higher (or even lower) but the perceived volume is significantly greater as the average volume is higher -
I owned and gigged wth the RH450 (and 2 x RS210 cabs) for a while and I always struggled to get what I wanted from the EQ. On paper it looks awesome, but in use, it certainly didn't deliver for me. And also be aware that is does have a significant cut off in top end frequencies. I can't find it currently but someone did a frequency amplitude plot of the RH450's output at "flat" and it cut off a lot of frequencies starting at something like 2Khz. I do know what you mean about getting the right frequency centres and I'm not a great lover of Markbass' chosen ones either. Don't forget that there are many ways of fiddling with your EQ. Changing (or adding a) preamp on the bass is a good one as most preamps accurately quote frequency centres and there are a lot of good parametric units around. A new preamp obviously will take no more room in your rig either. If you can source a preamp with the bass frequency centre of your choice, which also has a parametric mids to let you cut some of those very low mids, you would perhaps be getting close to what you are looking for. I think you can do a lot worse than start off with a known reliable clean amp (something like the LMIII, or GK MB500 (bass centre 60Hz, lo mids centre 250Hz) etc) and then simply do all your tweaking from the bass and from pedals.

Replacement Pickup Covers for Japan Fender Power Jazz Bass Special
hamfist replied to Dood's topic in Repairs and Technical
How about putting the exact sizes of your routs on this thread and we can all look in our gear refuse drawers. If we have any appropriate sized pickup covers we could get in touch. I know I've got a few unused P pickup covers in my drawer. -

People are looking for all sorts of different sounds on their basses. One man's "warm" is another man's "woolly" etc. The plain fact is that if you want any real sort of high frequency content to your sound you will need a horn/tweeter etc. As always, the application and quality of some of these is poor, and some is excellent.
-
Always liked both, but for different things.
-
Yes, I've always had excellent service from German Retailers, mainly Thomann, but also rock-gear and others. Their packing and speed delivery has been, without exception, superb.
-
Once you get to the quality of the NX2 and the Berg cabs you don't really get "better" just "different". So the rather un-useful advice is to play both and see which you like best.
Thanks Luke, I was reading the instruction manual (the English section! - it's an Ibanez amp) and it says "use this device only in the country where you purchased it" also it came with a 2 pin plug I phoned them and they said it was fine to use one that I had here with a UK 3 pin plug but I got a bit paranoid after reading that! Yes I agree on the UKIP thing!
The power is effectively the same in Europe as it is here. So all you will need to do is to use a UK kettle lead with the 3 pin plug on the end instead of the 2 pin Euro one. BTW, if we pull out of the EU there's no reason why we can't still keep our trade agreements, and I think they would stay, as it would benefit both "sides".

Now splitting for parts. Body now sold, subject to final payment. Will do an advert for the misc sales forum, but for the moment .. [s]J-retro Deluxe - £135 posted[/s] SOLD [s]Fralin SPlit Jazz pickup set125[/s] SOLD Neck plus Schaller tuners and string retainer £199 posted Recently purchased from BC's safc19371973, I bought this bass and one other (a fancy MIJ Ibanez) elsewhere, knowing that I could only keep one. It has been a VERY hard decision which one to sell. I wish I could afford to keep both, but I just can't justify it. Anyway, after a few days of solid testing and comparing I have decided that this one doesn't quite fit my needs at the moment quite as much as the Ibanez. So anyway, never mind all my yabbering, lets talk about the bass ..... It's a Warmoth Jazz constructed 2-3 years ago (by safc19371973). The body is 2 piece walnut, with a clear gloss finish. The absolutely stunning neck is made from Maccassar ebony, both the neck itself and the fingerboard, and contain the standard Warmoth stiffening rods, plus a dual action truss rod (heel adjusted). Nut width is 38mm. Tuners are quality Schaller ones. Frets are stainless steel. Nut is Graphtech. Pickups are Fralin Jazz splits (so standard Jazz, but noise-free) and they are great and definitely right up there with the best J pickups I have ever used. Pre-amp is a John East J-retro deluxe. Bridge is a Gotoh one, including string spacing adjustment, which will give you somewhere between 18-20mm spacing. As you can see this is made from very high quality components, and it has gone together so well it would be an absolute shame to split it up, although it would probably raise more money doing so. The bass is in excellent condition with only a few minor laquer dings on the body, mainly on the sides and rear. How does it play ? Well its a Jazz, and a damned good one. A huge variety of tones available with the East pre-amp. It has a heft and solidity in it's tone that you don't find in many basses (and I'm not talking about deep bass (although it can have plenty of that if you want). It sits in a band mix very solidly. Some Jazzes can be a bit lightweight and get lost a bit in the mix in my experience. This is NOT one of them. The only negative is the weight, and it is not a light bass, at just over 12lbs. However, this mass helps give it such a solid and punchy tone that it is well worth it IMO. On a strap it does not feel it's weight as it balances very well. Will come in a very sturdy Gator hard-case. I will post it to your door in mainland UK for £595, or collect it from the Southampton area for £580, which is what I paid for it. Interesting, but a 1.7" nut width ? Really ? for a 4 string ?? That's pretty extreme and would be an instant deal-breaker for me. This "type" of bass generally seems to be given a 38-40mm nut, which seems to attract the type of player who does not want to be struggling with the neck. I was actually also just about to suggest building it with a large control cavity for people to fit aftermarket preamps and then the video showed that they have done. Good call on that ! -

Here ya go. "Natural" Colron Danish Oil and Natural Briwax maple neck
Thanks for all the responses, a fair bit to think about, seems like briwax is a winner wax wise for protection, don't suppose any body that has used oils above on maple have got pics so I can get an idea?
I do have a maple neck that has been Danish Oiled and Briwaxed under the stairs. I'll try and motivate myself to get it out to take a pic. I am, however, working today and tomorrow. Please bear with me. Also, in answer to your previous question, the Briwax is extremely clean and easy to work with. Edit ... I do have this photo of the front of the headstock on that neck, which obviously has the same finish. It's the one of the green bass.

Just an additional comment for the thread .... I am increasingly finding it more and more useful to have EQ control both pre and post any overdrive/distortion (which I use almost all the time). The ability to shape the EQ going in allows you to alter the quality of the drive. Yet, also having the EQ after, allows you to fine tune the tone. I find it an incredibly useful method.
