1.
I thought Lorenzo was a Japanese make but I could be way off the mark there. I do remember that they were imported by Fletcher Coppock & Newman who were also importers of Hagstrom and Westone.
You could well be right, but its in my head that its Iti... Its buried in the spare room at the mo, aint been played for a few years. its not all that good tbh, orrible blue colour with a scratchplate like a hummingbird. Not nearly as good as my EKO 12 wss.The wife bougt it for me at an auction somewhere, so had to keep it. Odd times I pick up an acoustic, its my old 70s Yammy FG180. Nice to play my 4 chords on, ctisp and loud, but Very battered from where a mate used it to beat his wife with.....really !
 2.
Think that's Donny on keys.
Your probably right.. If I knew which was wich I wouldnt admit to it would I ?
 3. ear and who was associated with what back then, some people only bought albums
Sunn, Ampeg and Kustom amps were very popular with Motown/Soul players. American amps took a long time to get to the UK and there weren't many brands available in the market over here. Vox, Orange, WEM, Acoustic, HI-WATT, Marshall and HH were probably the most common amps seen on big stages over here during the 70's.
People were snobby about gear and who was associated with what back then, This cant have done Kustoms image a lot of good..Impressive looking Bass rig, but Donny Osmond as a Bass player - Very uncool. 4.
My earliest memories of kit are full of old italian names, none of which would anything to anyone. Davoli? FBT?
Yeah there were a few Italian brands still around, very likey spin off from the accordian business, which was still going strong into the late 60s. I'm told that there was an Italian semi acoustic Bass that was partly made of hardboard. I still have a Lorenzo acoustic, A lot like an EKO ( were they italian as well ? I - think so) I used to repair a lot of Bontempi organs and keyboards for Woolies and mail order catalogue firms in the 70s and 80s. Real quality kit they were.
 5.
Oh I remember the Ohm stuff too, I thought it was 80s though so I didn't mention it. My dad had an Ohm for a while he traded it in for a Polytone Minibrute 1! Weren't the ohm cabs concrete lined or something? - they were very heavy iirc...
There were a few odd ideas like that at the time. There was definitely a cab that had 2 'skins' of plywood with a cavity full of sand between them, and I know of at least one Bass Player who had pieces of paving slab inside his cab. one of the sales guys in a shop I worked at was running a mobile disco using a 100W marshall and a 1X18 that was literally full of old carpet offcuts. weighed a ton and sounded rubbish.
 6. just npticed that FAL owned Roost. Now Roost was good kit iirc. FAL stuff was also rebadged as RSC. Anybodt else remember them ?
 7.
The OHM stuff was pretty pokey for it's size and sat between Laney and Peavey pricewise. I can remember using one for a pub gig one night just to try it out and it was pretty reasonable, just not as good as the Peavey stuff. I'd forgotten all about FAL, not sure if that's old age creeping up or whether it was just a brand that really needed forgetting... That's a 'long gone' British company that's probably best glossed over. They were an extremely odd company, PA speakers, guitar amps and disco decks all featured in their product lineup - they just never really decided where to aim.
Yep.Although it did get a lot of people going who would never have afforded a good amp at the time.So as entry level kit I spose it served a purpose. I can remember seein a band at Barbarellas who had about 2 kW of Fal amps and speakers for a PA, sounded awful.
 8. Have'nt read all of this thread, but the 80s bass lines I that come to mind are on paul Young tracks - Pino ? and the Frankie Goes Hollywood one - Norman ? Was a great era for strong basslines, but not many of em to my taste really. I didnt play at all in the 80s, so took my eye off the ball a bit. Was Joe Jacksons Look Sharp album 80s ? theres some really great Bass on that which never gets mentioned on threads like this for some reason..
 9.
I had a Custom Sound combo, it got cut in half to be a seperate cab & head and used for foldback, it's still going today, being used for dance classes. It did not sound too bad at low volumes, better that the Laney POS combo I had too.
Dya mean the padded cab ones as endorsed The Osmonds ? Kustom Sound are still going I think.
 10.
Did they..?? Doubt they were a player in the Industry until late 70's though
The IC100 was around in 72/73, Although they were a guitar amp they had a great bass sound and quite a few people were using them. Never liked their Bass amps much myself.
 11. Started with a few home made amps, then I had a RSC version of the Linear cage amp. Mid 70s, I had an Elgen 100W horrible purple thing, with a homebrew 2 X 15, then a Vox Supreme guitar amp with the same cab, then a Marshall SL100 with a 4X12 and a 1X18, Swapped the Marshall for an HH IC100 guitar amp, used with various cabs, great bass sound through the clean channel. I still have the HH as a spare in case my 70s Bassman 100 silverface packs up. I have used the HH and the Bassman for pub gigs recently, and tbh, while not as loud as my Hartke rig, theyre plenty loud enough. Bearing in mind that our guitarist used a 70s HH 100w combo.
 12. So is this a Mitsubishi Starion or a Stallion.
 13.
Thanks to this thread Terrorvision have been singing "Agg - Weee - Lar" in my head all day
I got that too, only with me its The Champs singing Ta kee laar,
 14. Used to work with a guy who always called Hewlett Packard Hewitt & Placard, sort of stuck, I still tend to say it that way now, twenty years later.
 15.
Taking a look at the bass player in that vid...I'm very worried for you.
We all looked like that in 73 tbh, looking at the girls in the audience, he dont look all that out of place, just a bit better dressed.
 16.
Ah, I'm just up the road from you in Heather (pronounced Heether but I reckon it's speech impediment caused by interbreeding).
i'm in War wick shire, But your right about the inbreeds. The old folks even all look alike round here. Lot of french sounding villages around your way for some reason, plus Burgerland of course. So preumably a few throwbacks.
 17.
I always thought Hartke was 'hart kuh'. As for 'Waar wick', I'll start paying attention to that prononciation as soon as they stop using 'Scotlandshire'...
Not far from where I live, theres Warton, Pronounced Waaarton by the locals, and Wilnecote, which is Wincutt. mah duck. I can remember Dionne Warwick,( the Cilla Black impersonator ) telling someone on a chat show that it should be pronounced War wick.
 18. So is Hartke. Hartk, Hart K, Hart, Hark, Hartkey ??? As for Warwick, I guess if you English its Warwick, if your American its Waar wick.
 19. My girlfriend sez we should........ Fit in anything you like, Those 5 opening words are the kiss of death.
 20. Dunno about the soapbar one, I put vintage 10K KA pups on my P bitza and theyre great. My Bass Collection 301 (passive) had rubbish weedy pups on it, I swapped them for some Wilkinsons that I came by mega cheap, and theyre a gazillion times better, i definitely will fit KAs to it when I'm feeling a bit richer. i love the bass, just didnt like thw wimpy sound.
 21. Some people just never look for the simple option. bit like the old story of the lorry stuck under a bridge.
 22.
thats quite cool - would two work correctly together in a jazz bass ?
Two tone pots on a Jazz ?? I thought there was 2 vols and a tone
 23. If its just a tone knob on a passive Bass, like a P, then its a treble cut, so no treble would be cut. You'd actually have slightly more treble than with it fitted. just fitting the capacitor, without the pot would have the opposite effect. You could compromise with a fixed resistor though. Hope that helps.
 24. I'm surprised more rehearsal rooms dont have CCTV, or those that do dont usually have decent systems. When you consider that system with one camera in each room would probably cost less than a reasonably good amp these days..
 25.
Its a bit of history, wants putting in a museum!
Its a piece of wood, play it or use it with your canoe, but museum...Why ? Norman made the music and probably wouldve done it with or without that particular Bass. Would you put him in a museum when he croaks ?
