As well as all the above, make sure you leave plenty of time to get there and make sure before you leave that all your gear is working properly. Two things that really naff gigs up is being stressed about being late and faulty gear.
Another way is to get set up, leave, and then get back there at the last minute. That way you have to just go for it , pushing yer nerves out of the way cos you aint got time to worry. But whatever way you do it, check yourself - in a mirror if possible - before you go on,
 2. Keep your head up and try to look confident. The rests already been said, but remember if you look like your having a good time it sort of rubs off on everyone else. Christmas party audiences ave already set out to enjoy themselvesand thats best kind of gig to start with imho
 3.
I picked up one of these last week at Halfords (£1.99) Measuring the thickness showed 57 thou / 1.45mm So I thought it would be good for E A D slots at least (if a little large for the G - I'm relating to a 0.045 to 0.105 inch 4 string set) But I hadn't noticed that the file pattern was on the front and back sides only and the sides are plain so whilst it's good for widening slots it can't really cut down into the nut. Am persevering with a combination of this file / needle files and those welding tip cleaner 'files'. The Crimson Guitar supplied nut cutting tool someone linked to here looks great but rather pricey if you're only cutting nuts now and again. Pity there's not a reduced blade count version for bass to avoid the cost of the blades that will only really be used for six string guitars,
Sorry, should have mentioned they are good for widening the slots without making them deeper. Which is what I thought you wanted.

 5.
tried playing looking in the mirror and apart from it being traumatic it just threw me
You have to practice practicing
 6.
This gives you the added bonus of being able to try out your dance moves before unleashing them on the public...
Jet Harris' secret... Also helps you learn not to keep looking at hour hands on stage. And less beer, means a flatter belly, so the bass will not be tilted outwards at the top when you stand up.
 7. Drink less beer ? Seriously though, try practicing standing up, but with a mirror in front of you.
 8. Much as I love Roy Orbisons stuff, this has more feeling. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2y1TZXc5DiY
 9. Old man take a look at my life I'm a lot like you.
 10. I don't see why anyone who has enjoyed gigging themselves would knock them for it. It addictive, and whether they enjoy it or not, its more fun than a straight job in a factory, which most of them would be too old for anyway. How many on here complain about playing the same ol tired covers to 2 old men and a dog, but still do it every weekend for next to nothing ? There is nothing wrong with using the bands name that they had success with if it means getting punters through the door and bread on the table imo.

 12. Lying Eyes. A bit naff now cos its been played just about to death, but 1st time I heard it I was blown away. Wont embed for some reason. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WeNBspJGVko
 13.
I'm going to stand my ground with Crazy Horses. Along with Run Run Run by Jo Jo Gunne is was as heavy as anything in the charts that year - and yes, I suppose you could argue that it was rendered null and void by Little Jimmy Osmond's effort that year, but, yeah, I'm standing by Crazy Horses!!
The Osmonds playing heavy rock music looks about a real as pat Boone singing Tooty Fruity. It was on one of the old TOTP programs on BBC4 last week. It was embarrassing to even watch it.
 14.
I was moving around the years earlier but 1972 was indeed a great year for TOTP - T Rex and Metal Guru, Slade and Gudbuy T'Jane, Argent and Hold Your Head Up (Russ Ballard cool as anything), Mott the Hoople and All The Young Dudes and even the Osmonds confused us with Crazy Horses (the Osmond song it was okay to like). Hawkwind and Silver Machine was the first time I can recall film of a band being shown rather than they being in the studio - I think the Jackson 5 did something similar with one of their early 70s songs, though can't recall which. On a personal note, as a Coventry City fan, seeing Lieutenant Pigeon on TOTP with one of the band wearing a (green and black stripes) City away top was a great moment... but what an awful song!
Crazy Horses was never, never ever cool to like. Lieutenant Pidgeon was a geat novelty song. Dont knock novelty songs, they have a place in the rich tapestry, and tbh the charts could do with a few now.
 15.
Similar here. For most kids of a certain age back then TOTP was the only access we had to actually seeing what the bands looked like - Radio 1 was where we heard them, TOTP was where we saw them. Bowie doing Starman, Roxy Music doing Virginia Plain, Thin Lizzy doing Whiskey in the Jar, The Faces doing Maggie May, Alice Cooper doing School's Out, Slade doing Coz I Luv You... all great moments.
You forgot Mott the Hoople doing all the Young Dudes, The move doin California Man, not to mention Lindisfarne. Twas a great summer when everything in music seemed to change, and also when I started playing Bass.
 16.

Oh yeah ! My daughter cant listen to it, it still frightens her.
 17.
Ha! I know the names of the open strings and the notes at the fifth, seventh and twelfth frets and work everything else out from that (if I need to). I don't tune the bass by ear, either. I find theory gets in the way of feel and groove and everything I do is based entirely on learning pattern shapes. I'm not saying this is necessarily a good way to do it, but it's the way I've done it for nearly forty years and it works for me. I find music theory and practise of scales and so on is a massive downer, so I simply don't do them. To me if something becomes a chore, it's stone dead. YMMV, obviously.
This. 100% agree. Every word fits the way I do it. Apart from somebody saying " That string, that fret 4 times, and then that one 4 times" the first time I picked up a Bass, no one ever taught me anything. I picked up what technique I have by watching Bass Players in the bands I saw in the Railway and Barberellas.
 18.
Actually come to think of it I believe it was the same venue, jammy beggar's probably got a free pass or something I guess a lot of those guys within 10-15 years of age of each other from Brum/black country area will all know each other from crossing paths on the gig trail from the 60's onwards. And of course they all bow down to Steve Gibbons
Steve Gibbons is a very nice bloke, but yes your right. They did all seem to know each other. It was his birthday yesterday, Last time I saw him about 6 months ago he pulled off a blinding gig. Nothing but respect for the man.
 19.
Think there might have been an armed robbery conviction in his youth as well. Truth is there probably aren't many rock n rollers of his longevity who don't have a few skeletons in the closet.
Precisely. Look at Gary Glitter...
 20.
Didn't he get done for secretly filming women in the toilets at a club he owned?

Didn't he get done for secretly filming women in the toilets at a club he owned?
Also did 5 years for transporting a 14 year old white girl across the state line for sex. Convicted twice I think, because the white judge at the first trial made racist remarks and the first verdict was squashed.on appeal.
 21. 72, After having problems finding drummer who could play loud, we actually advertised for a loud drummer in the early 80s. A guy called Ron turned up he was really good, and he was the loudest I have ever played with, but after a bit he got to be too much. Last I heard he was living around Stourbridge way. Just noticed your in Worc;s.
 22.
As for Joe Brown, that can't possibly be the same hair he had in the 50's?
Well, no. Hairs like triggers broom innit ? You cut it, new hair grows...
 23.
Or are you all just after an easy life churning out popular songs to an adoring but ageing audience?
I'm ageing myself. Spending a couple of hours at a time behind Susannah Hoffs could make an old man very happy.
