1. Sounds like the ideal approach to me. I recently played my first live gig in ages with a band that we've put together at work. We're from all over the country so practice was sparse but fortunately the studio we used to practice also had a big room with a stage in it that we could use for the gig. We paid for the venue but asked attendees to chuck in a bucket for charity, raised about £400! We did a bit of promo amongst colleagues who really had no idea what to expect and all had a great night. Relaxed for all of us but with the chance for some 'in jokes' and banter. There was about 50 people in. Next gig, is the now the Christmas party, with 300+ in DJs etc. Gulp!
2. Thanks for all these sugegstions guys, my guitarist mate say 'Cheers' too! I've never seen one of those Nighthawks before, they look really cool, almost tempted myself (apart from the fact that my skinny strings skills are about as good as my singing...) The Phant -o -matic is rather smart too. They both look a bit traditional, but also distinctly different to the norm. Bit subversive, I like it..
3. Jazz is very useful, it's the term we in our band use to describe those completely bum notes we drop in every now and then . I can't pretend to know much about jazz, I've listened to the odd track and it's been fun. However most of the jazz bands I've seen (no major stars or anything just local gigs and a wedding or two) seem to comprise of really good musicians, who are in fact so good they don't have to play songs anymore. 'I know, let's have another 5 min bass/drum/trumpet solo while the audience chat amongst themselves shall we?' Did see a cracking jazz singer with just a sax player once in a ridiculously expensive jazz bar in Switzerland (think me and my mate had 2 1/2's all night), they were stunningly good, but they had songs. I suppose the point is that as soon as you step away from communicating something in a musical language that most people can/want to grasp you are always walking a thin line between success and derision. I'd go and see jazz in a jazz club again, that could be a fun experience, but if a pub booked a jazz band on a Friday/Saturday night, I'd probably leave.
4. I think you are right about it being a wave body. Has a different head stock though. Much prefer the look of this to the ESP signature model.
5. Another +1 for the Zoom, mines an H2N.
6. Hi all Now, I'm no BC Rich fan, but Tom Araya's bass in the Seasons in the Abyss video just about has to be 'the' definitive metal bass (imho of course), far too metal for me ever to be able to carry off but I'd love to know what it is. Of course, it may sound like crap because you can't hear the bass in much of Slayers stuff. Doesn't seem to look quite like any other BC Rich so I suspect it's probably a custom, but hey, anybody know what it is? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KQPWzaDGoVI Suitably barking video too. SLAYER ! \m/ Jason
7. I'd probably just try an eq pedal and roll off some of the top for a more fingery sound. Where you pluck the string will make a big difference too, I don't use a pick much but I'd imagine picking closer to the neck would help.
8. Cheers all, I'll share this link with my mate. There is literally so many to choose from it's handy to get some ideas to narrow down options a bit. Jason
9. Hi all One of my guitarists is on the look out for a slightly smaller than usual bodied electric guitar. He currently has a couple of Squier (Silver Series I think) Strats, so ideally something to suit a similar budget. Any ideas all? Cheers Jason
10. Just been passed by a small black guy who was running incredibly fast. I fortissimo?
11. Traded my Pickle Pie B for Mark's Rat Tail. Excellent communications, quick posting and no fuss whatsover. Thanks mate "May the Fuzz be with you."
12. Roaring Forties (a bit age dependant...)
13. I just last night ordered some headphones and Nux PG1, bit of a punt really (but I wanted to plug in my MP3 player and fancied the metronome function.) http://www.amazon.co.uk/Nux-Digital-Effects-Tuner-Metronome/dp/B0041D81H6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1380030275&sr=8-1&keywords=nux+pg1 Should be along in a week or so, if I remember I'll post up a few lines on it.
14. Sorry, just spotted Preston in the tabs, no good for a southern shandy pants like me then...
15. Hmm. Any interest in a trade for a Wren and Cuff Pickle Pie B?
16. I found that a little squirt of contact cleaner solved it on one of mine.
17. I've not had that many basses, just 4 in all my years of playing and I've still got 3 of them. My only active ones have been the Sandberg (switchable) and a Hohner B (great lightweight bass actually) and that was switchable too. So, put that down to my lack of shopping! I thought they'd all be switchable. Incidentally, I had a play about with my Big Muff and the Sandeberg and passive Warwick at the weekend. Not a much difference in terms of switching between active and passive (besides the obvious change in tone etc.) but I hadn't really played about much with rolling of the tone and volume on the guitar before and this does make the sound much more what I'm after. So, that's one lesson learned for me re fuzz. I think my Muff will probably do me know so I'll be selling off my Pickle Pie B as it's probably more than I need, mind you perhaps I need to repeat the experiment with that first!! Thanks for your input.
18. Could use an old biker tip for side stands on soft ground. Just stamp on a beer/coke can anduse the bottom on the can (complete with ready made pocket), worked for me to to support a Suzuki Bandit, and I'm hoping for your sake that your bass isn't heavier than that!
19. Right. I shall resist and maintain my usual state of blissful ignorance and leave the complex and mystical, infernal machinations of boxes that go zzzz to the properly qualified 'Afuzzianados.' That was a close call, I'm off to smoke some crack to ease my nerves (Have you tried crack? I hear it's rather moreish.)
20. Woah! Lots of squiggly lines there! Looks like some kind of fiendish maze for a lab rat. I'll just have to rely on a bit of trail and error I think.
21. Cheers Graeme! Sounds like you had fun. I hadn't noticed much difference with my two fuzzes (big muff and a pickle pie other than it just sounding a bit 'better' (hard to quantify I know) with my Sandberg in passive. But, I didn't really play about with the volume control. The missus is away on a course tomorrow so I anticpate some sonic experimentation tomorrow night! I notice that you mention '2 transistor' type fuzzes working this way. How can you tell which ones are built like that? Cheers Jason
22. I had a Unibass for a while, it worked as described and tracked well etc. Just sounded a bit synthetic, better when I ran it through the PA and and outboard amp sim pedal, but still not great. The octave and fuzz thing seems pretty close when I've tried it. Operative 451, your rig sounds close to what I was thinking of, though a bit more complex. I thought maybe about just line out from the bass rig to the extra amp and have a mute switch for that amp. Cheers all
