1. Thanks for the comments guys, hopefully the delivery will be made today! Will let you know once I've had a noodle or two. J
2. I don't often buy a new bass (I've had 5 in over 20 years) so am looking forward to taking delivery of a Yamaha BB1024x tomorrow. Last bass I bought was my Sandberg (with the proceeds from selling my beloved motorbike, couldn't spend the money on anything sensible after all...) which is great and going nowhere! But I've recently got the GAS for a PJ for some classic passive thump and growl. Reading various posts on here led me to the BB and I preferred a 424x to most of the Fenders which I also tried recently, so I'm hoping the 1024x will be even better and just what I fancy. I think I've got a pretty good deal too, the shop is selling it as ex-demo, but it's still got the film on the scratchguard and they say it's just been hung in the shop with no marks. Surely that makes every shop bass ex-demo? Still, it's £250 less than most others I can find, so as long as it's all fine, I'm happy!
3. Not for me, battle scars are won the hard way. This reminds me of blokes I knew back when I rode motorbikes who would take files to their knee sliders on their leathers so it looked like they'd got their knee down... I played a Nate Mendel recently, nice bass but the light relicing on that seemed pointless and the heavy stuff is just trying too hard.
4. This'd do for me.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sHCaU2Qe-D8
5. Can't claim to have owned or played loads of basses in my time. But have a +1 for a Sandberg California, mine is the JM version and it does good 'impressions' of most things, I'd imagine a PM version may be even closer to what you are after. The active circuitry is switchable so you can have passive or active at the pull of a switch (if you haven't added loads of boosted eq via the active circuity then there is no change in volume from to the other, which is handy.) Dreamy neck too.
6. Thanks Kev That sounds like you've saved me some pretty pointless experimentation! Don't want to lower the gain. J
7. Hi all I acquired a B3K recently, very happy with it I am too. I noticed some blurb on the website stating that you 'can experiment with 12v for more headroom.' I don't have a 12v power supply so just wondered if anyone has tried this, and if so, was it worth it? Cheers Jason
8. I think if you play in covers bands it's not uncommon to nick the odd song or two from other bands, I know we used to do it, and have it done to us. Can't get too sniffy about it as we're all ripping off the originals. But a whole set of different arrangments ? That does sound a bit weird. Weirdest instance I've had was when a local covers band (who were much better than us when we started and who we got on really well with) nicked a couple of 'our tunes' after we'd had a couple of theirs. Weird bit was we took some good stuff from them, they took an awful slap bass/death metal version of 'No Limits' by 2 Unlimited from us (which is a bit worrying really in hindsight, was that our best track?)
9. Blimey Skezz, that Hellfest line up is epic! Let's hope a few of them jump over the channel and join the Soni line up. I'm not going to say 'Hope you have a good time' because I can't see how you could avoid it!
10. Maiden's sound was poor at Download wasn't it, don't know why though, it had been pretty good for the other bands. Maybe the Spitfire shot the sound engineer? That is indeed a great turn of phrase! Now if someone can make an effects pedal called a 'Druid Accelerator', I'll buy it....
11. Yeah, the line is a bit predictable, but tbh I think they probably need to be sure of good attendance. Especially with it being the 40 year Knebwoth anniversay or whatever and pulling the plug previous years. Tend to agree re Download looking somewhat weak. I enjoyed Download this year though and that was the first time I'd been back to Doni since the Monsters of Rock days. Never seen The Prodigy and have to admit that I'm looking forward to it, think they could be an ideal fun Friday night band to get things warmed up. The Metallica set is supposed to be chosen by the fans, so we should try some cheeky Suicidal Tendencies/Infectious Grooves nominations to let Mr Trujillo really off the hook!!
12. Hi all Anyone going to Soni next year? I am, with a couple of mates. Headliners in night order are Prodigy, Maiden, Metallica. Fingers crossed for a strong undercard too! Cheers Jason
13. I was at the O2 too, first time of seeing Sabbath (I've seen Ozzy before) though I'm an old git. Really enjoyed it, Geezer is indeed the man. NIB and Fairies Wear Boots really stood out for me. His sound on the latest album is also what fuelled a recent spell of effects pedal shuffling/trading/expenditure....
14. A nice quick and simple pedal trade with Andy, as smooth and as pleasant as all the other feedback suggests! Thanks mate.
15. Only legitimate way to smash a guitar is over the heads of all the numpties who insist on filming every blooming thing on their phones....
16. I bought one mostly for when we practiced in a village hall with a wooden floor. Instantly tightened up the bass and made the whole experience more pleasant for us all! I don't use it all the time but if my band ever actually gets around to gigging again it'll be coming out with me for sure. I'm not a big fan of compressors, but this to me seemed to do the same thing without feeling like my rig had the brakes on. Only thing I'll say is that they are a bit wobbly with a tallish rig on. My 212 +210 with head does sway a bit as the drummer brushes past, but not during playing etc. I also costed it out and combined with sourcing and getting the bits and time spent bodging it I decided that I'd just buy one. (Which isn't like me normally as I'm very proud of my kid painted chip board offcuts effects board!)
17. If it's a smile on your face and jump about you want.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eti21PVHXrg
18. Yep, alright by me that. Actually did feel a bit edgy.
19. Hi mate I never really used the drop tuner myself, don't think I knew you could tune a bass differently then! However, I did fiddle about with it just before I sold it and got it to work. Now, this is dredging back a bit but I think I opened the d tuner and wound the micro tuners either right open or right down on the bridge (what a beast of a bridge it is too, a Steinberger liscenced design I think!) Then I think I tuned the string to D, shut the D tuner and used the micro tuners to then adjust it to an E. I think that's what I did anyway! GLWTS!
20. I used one of these as my main gigging bass for many years back in the day. Light, fast easy neck, switchable between active and passive, really nice basses. Have a bump!
21. My guitarist mate has just told me he's got a tele on the way. Doesn't look any smaller to me! But then as long as he's happy. Seems to be a few others that are interested in this thread so thanks for contributing ideas (some even made me fancy a skinny stringer.) Jason
22. I think we had several instruments, but they were all kept locked away from the 1,300 kids.... Did see a double bass, just the once mind. Honestly can't remember actually doing any music in music lessons. The highlight was usually spreading Vicks Vapour Rub on the keys of the one badly tuned piano and watching the hateful old crone who was one of our music teachers run from the room due to her severe allergy to the stuff. She was a musical moron, asked to do an A to Z of composers I had Jarre for J, evidently I had made him up. She didn't like it when I said there were actually two, father and son, one composing film scores and the other a leading electronic music composer and would she like me to bring in some records? The other music teacher just applied lipstick for an hour and shagged a few 6th formers.
23. I can't claim to have had many heads but I have an HD350 and it's plenty loud enough (when paired with either or both of my Neoline 210 or 212) for anything that I would think most people are likely to need. Really lovely amp, very transparent so you can just have your basses tone, or easy to tweak the EQ for a change. No amp GAS here! Also, I think that there is some formula of the order that in order to double volume you need to increase watts output x10. I'm preparing to be shot down on this as it's just a dusty fact from the dark recesses.... But, the gist is a 700w amp isn't twice as loud as a 350w. The luddite in me also likes that it looks like a 'proper' amp too, sorry mini amp fans but I personally can't get over the 'clock radio' aspect of them.
