It's certainly not what I'd call transparent. It adds a ton of low mids and rolls of the upper mids and treble quite a bit. But the drive is quite natural and amp like. If your basic sound is like that anyway (e.g. a P with flats) it works really well.

If you're changing the preamp it doesn't matter if it has an active/passive switch, you can fit one during the upgrade, or your chosen pre might come with one!

Like the VT and BDDI I'm sure it's very flexible and suitable as a cleanish warm preamp as well. Time will tell, pre order incoming!

VT Bass and BDDI feature a clean blend; this has a touch of gain and EQ applied to the clean side, AKA the deep channel. Should sound fatter overall and make the two channels more cohesive. The VT and BDDI flub out with too much low end hitting the clipping circuit at high gain. The YYZ has a switch to cut the lows entering the dirt section. The BDDI has a mid scoop that you need to fight against with the EQ. The YYZ has a very present midrange, I'm interested in seeing how it compares to cranking up the character on the VT. I love the DuG pedal but it's best in a supportive role, humongous chasm in the mids creates space for heavy guitars yet still cuts and punches through. I would like something with more midrange poke for when the bass is taking on more of a lead role. Early reports from users experienced with all their previous pedals have said this is the best thing they've ever put out. That's why I want to try one. I've no interest in trying to sound like Geddy Lee, I've not listened to much Rush - I gave it a try once and had to switch it off!

I'd try a different bass and different cables (instrument and XLR) to rule those out first. Then a different mixer! If it crackles on both your amp DI and a standalone DI box, the problem is likely to exist elsewhere.

Not so bad in that case then, if the software just unlocks the effects, and you don't have to connect a PC every time you decide to add a certain effect to a patch! Still an odd decision from Zoom though.

They've just released a limited edition 7lb Jazz, so you might get lucky if they follow that up with a P!

Just looked up the FX list, lots of them have a blue star next to them which means you can only access them via the software, which is a bit crap. Last time I tried to download their software, Windows Defender blocked it anyway, I wonder if that's been sorted out yet!

Can you not just add it via the built in menu like you can on the B3n?

The M82 can be quite vicious down low, just realise that the decay knob actually controls the lowest frequency of the sweep rather than the decay time, so just don’t set it too low! Fave filter on the Zoom though has to be the Z-Tron for me.

A cab sim is still pretty useful if sending a feed to the PA, but only if you can split it so that the cab sim only goes to the PA and not your amp. The Zoom doesn't have such flexible routing possibilities, although the Line6 Helix HX Stomp does! The B7K in both the Helix and the B3n are so close to the real thing you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference. I have tested the Helix vs. the DI out of the M900 amp (which is effectively a B7K Ultra with a power section) and couldn't really tell the difference. I've also pitted the B3n against my real B3K and preferred the B7K model (even with the EQ set flat it sounds different to the B3K model). The Zoom units are worthy of purchase based on the B7K sim alone in my opinion! For a metal bassist on a budget I don't think you can do much better.

I tried all sorts on my BB415, after getting my 1025X I realised I liked those stock D'Addario nickels better than anything else I had been using before ,so have pretty much exclusively been using those since! Except a brief foray into Dunlop Super Bright nickels, which were far too floppy for my liking. Might try the NYXLs on the next change though to see if they are a significant step up.

Yes, it sounds much better than their more complicated ones that have the MM pickup too close to the bridge!

Not tried them on my BB mind, but I have TI flats on my Fender P and Sandberg Basic. Lovely strings.

No great ones, like all the ones on Google they all look plain black! It is a very subtle effect, not anything like the Musicman sparkle paintjobs I'm afraid! But looks obviously different next to the 1025X up close.

You're all making me wish I kept my 415! It was lighter than my 1025X and had a slimmer neck, black sparkle paintjob and painted headstock.

How about a Zoom B3n or B1Four. They have a model of a B3K and B7K that's very very close to the original, plus a ton of compressors and other toys. I'm going to be putting up my B3n for sale, but the B1Four is much cheaper and compact if you don't need multiple stomp switches that make it better for live use.

This - I'd get an amp with an aux in and headphone out. I do love my little practice devices and multi-fx boxes, but only because I already have an amp.

You are under thinking this! A standalone expression does not go in the chain, no signal passes through it. It just controls one or more parameters of whatever pedal it's connected to.
