1.
Thanks for the lovely pics Silvia. Pity no one captured the granny zooming past the front of the stage on her mobility scooter...
It was a pleasure, Ad! The problem with taking photos of your setup was that you guys were in the shade, compared with the extremely bright surroundings, and had a dark backdrop. That meant I had to zoom in as close as possible, rather than take more panoramic shots, or the result would have been either the band disappearing in a dark background while the audience/scooter etc. were correctly exposed, or the band being visible but the audience becoming a bright blob of white light. The above possibly due to my relatively cheap - and hence limited - camera and my refusal to have anything to do with Photoshop and the like
2. Day of gorgeous sunshine Some photos from the Jetsonics gig: http://www.flickr.co...57634528690385/ First photo of six:
3. Bump because this is a brilliant thread, and here is a photo of Happy Jack with his new Matamp, taken at the Junkyard Dogs' gig last night. The amp (as well as the bass and cabs!) sounded awesome
4. LOL your Pee bass is even better than the model on ebay Do you ever play it live?
5. Hmmm, 666 would have been better Have you seen this? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/sh*t-o-Caster-fretless-4-string-bass-/251291077220?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item3a821d8a64
6. Do Alembics still have an adjustable nut? That would at least make two manufacturers offering the system, out of the hundreds out there.
7. I'm sensing another photo opportunity being thrown at me for this Saturday night!
8.
I think there is a high end maker that uses them (can't remember the name). Found these on Thomann: http://www.thomann.d...er_nut_bass.htm
Those on my Warwicks have a different design. They comprise a flat, fixed base and a slotted top piece that's mounted on the base with two screws, which can be used to raise or lower it. High-end Warwicks have brass adjustable nuts, mine are humble plastic, but they work fine.
Pretty much just Warwick as far as I know. Getting the nut height right isn't something that needs to be adjusted by the player, the builder should get it right when the bass is built. Some purists may feel that because the threaded bits of the Warwick adjustable nut aren't permanently fixed to the neck you lose some sustain / tone, but it's probably negligible. I expect Warwick have trademarked the design and they're known for going after anyone who infringes anything of theirs very aggressively.
To be honest, I don't see why adjusting the nut should be seen as less of a task that can be carried out by the player than, for instance, adjusting the truss rod or repositioning the saddles. I know that, on my Warwicks, the adjustable nut has helped me get exactly the right action everywhere, whenever I've changed strings from rounds to TIs to D'Addario Chromes. You don't get the same results, with the same ease, on other basses.
9. If Warwick are the only manufacturer to offer an adjustable nut (even in their budget series), then I imagine they must have trademarked the design.
10.
The frets were approx 1 or 2 mm high, once they're gone the strings will feel too high in the nut. So you need to open out the slots a bit to get the strings closer to the finger board.
I assume not many non-Warwick basses have an adjustable nut, then? Why? (Genuine question - I'm surprised that such a clever thing is not very common.)
11. LOL I think we had this debate before. Verdict: does not look good, but is a one-off, commemorative piece for their 30th anniversary, and it's cheap. They didn't make it in a lefty version, so I was spared any agonising on whether I'd buy it for the novelty/celebration value or not
12. Excellent - just tweeted again with the added FB page. Thanks Steve.
13. YAY! Done Just back from the Greenford Carnival. obviously with a lot more photos of assorted bands. I'll get down to sorting a few albums out during the weekend.
14. It was a pleasure to meet you, Steve, and we had a fantastic evening. I'm working on the photos and will be in touch soon. Feel free to Facebook me - I'll probably publish an album there too, eventually. \m/ \m/
15. Quick selection of pics from tonight's awesome NHM event! (Many more on disk, plus a video.)
16. Photos of the awesome rock chick with BigJim on bass
17.
See that lady's legs by the case ... 'twas her! She went up 30 minutes after us, sporting an Epi Les Paul which she used strictly for rhythm guitar, a variety of mouth organs which she knew how to use, and a pair of lungs that could have taken the back wall of the pub out ...
I've got a few photos of her too, with BigJim on bass. I'll eventually get them ready for Flickr too. By the way, PJ, none of us are BC admins, just dedicated forum members Sorry for not saying hi to you in person in the end, I kept meaning to come over to you but never managed.
18. LOL take your time They're great photos and it'd be good to show them around as widely as possible.
19. Could we have the photos and writeup here on this thread too? Would make it easier for me to tweet the news and allow access to all our followers, not just those who are on FB. Thanks guys
20. Watch out for the position of the side dots on the neck - a defretted bass will have them in a different place from a bass that's fretless from the start.
21. LOL now we all sooo want to see that amp, Jack!
