1. Hello everyone, I'm struggling with DI out and Ashdowns specifically. I use a ABM EVOII head and most gigs I play, the sound Engineer just DI's straight out of the head,I'm generally unhappy about the DI sound sent to front of house. We are only a three piece so I like a bit of gain and drive particually when the guitarist soloing. I've never felt happy about the PA bass sound with either with pre/post selected on the Ashdown amps -it sounds sterile/clanky and weak with too much top end.I've noticed the same with many Ashdown players live.Good on stage sound means little if it the bass sounds poor out front. Do no live engineers use miked up bass amps anymore? I'm thinking of buying a sansamp or MXR-80 to give the DI some proper drive. I have also used many other bassists Ashdowns and found the same results. For home recording I used DI bass (via plug ins) blended with recorded sound, which sounds great, are live sound engineers just lazy? or are these DI outputs just poor? Regards Neil From the Ashdown website:- DIRECT INJECT (D.I.) - A balanced D.I. isprovided on a latching XLR socket. This has a push button placed below it that allows theuser to choose either a Pre E.Q. signal (button pushed IN) or a Post E.Q. Post Sub and effects signal (button OUT). The output signal from this XLR socket is set to a level and impedance suitable for connecting directly into the Microphone input of a mixing desk for either Direct Injection into the PA system or for recording. This must ONLY be used into a Balanced Microphone input, it is not intended for any other type of connection. This has a floating ground that is referenced to the mixing console it is plugged into and should not need ground lifting. It is also unaffected by Phantom Powering on the Microphone input. Make sure your XLR plug does not have theshell of the plug internally connected to signal ground or this will connect the systemto chassis ground of the ABM and may cause problems with hum.
2. Fantastic looking bass, and curious to know how it all sounds-I’ve looked at those warmouth US parts myself. If it any conciliation I bought some Gotoh GB-2N replacement tuners, and I found even with a generous pilot hole sa few screws snapped off. So I used Hipshot and Schaller tuners instead to upgrade my other basses.Does seem like soft metal. Cheers, Neil
3. Hello Everyone, Sorry to hi-jack this category, but I have a bass in the for sale section which may interest people in this forum . Is not Ebay JapCrap yet, but may be if it doesn't sell ... tis like a private viewing before the auction http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=27019 Cheers Neil
4. Hello Everyone, Up for sale is my trusted 1970s Japanese or Korean bass? I bought this bass in the states a few years ago, from a used guitar shop in LA and brought It back home as i liked the way it looked, and played acoustically. I always suspected it was maybe Hondo II ? It has no decal- so I added one I had lying around (tut!) and replaced the awful pups (Artec vintage alnico £20) -they sound fine, I did try SD 1/4Lb's for a while and they rumped ! and had it set up at Tom Waghorn guitar in Bristol (£45) My only criticism is the sheer weight of the bass and the tuners, which tend to resonate (and could be upgraded-they look very similar size to mexican fender ones)But I've left the bass un-modified (original bridge and tuners) The body is made from three chunks of ash and I looks maple on maple neck. Korean or Japanese the bass is nice and good condition for age-not butchered, and deserves to be played- I haven't used it in a while. See earlier thread, with the resident Japan bass expert, Jon:- http://basschat.co.u...pic=7473&st=440 £120 ? or maybe Part Ex for good Bass DI such as MXR-M80 or Tech 21 Sansamp bass driver DI? Collection from Central Bristol BS3 or Maybe postage depending on the deal. Cheers Neil
5. Hello, As requested actual pictures of the cab.(Additional spare carpet not shown) Collection from Central Bristol BS3 or Thornbury Cheers Neil
6. Hello Everyone, Up for sale is my trusted trace Elliot 1518 1x15" 300W speaker cab. Twin front tuned ports and red bands. I've had this a while but this is now surplus to needs (my 4x10" is sufficient.) Around 10 years old solid and complete, great sound, heavy and robust. Must be made of industrial plywood! Good condition and wear, one carpet rip underneath, and typical hair associated with Trace carpeted equipment. -A speakon connector has been professionally installed in place of the input XLR connector-fits perfectly in the original hole and is much more useful! -Also included a large quantity of new and original green Trace Elliot carpet (enough to replace the cab or cover another whole cabinet) -Includes original cover.

9. Hello Jon, Sorry to hijack the JapCrap forum, but you seem the resident expert here. I’m after a little far eastern information.... I bought this bass in the states a few years ago, from a used guitar shop in LA and brought It back home as i liked the way it looked, and played acoustically. I always suspected it was a MIJ Hondo II as many appear on Ebay.com, but this I’ve never seen this model until today! And this has confirmed my suspicions…. http://cgi.ebay.com/Vintage-Hondo-II-Bass-...1QQcmdZViewItem It has no decal, so I added one I had lying around (tut!)a nd replaced the awful pups and had it set up. The bass now plays really well, once it had been set up, the nut was stupidly high and set up was terrible. My only criticism is the weight and the tuners, which tend to resonated sometimes(and could be upgraded.) What else can you tell me about these basses as I may be tempted to sell it on as I’m not using it regularly and have a similar P-bass already. Best Regards orangepeelneil
10. [ Hi jon, Thanks for the mail, I see from basschat your one of the MIJ experts, I'm a big MIJ fan myself, my 'Fresher' Jazz being one of my best finds (once i changed the pups) I also have a MIJ solid ash bodied bass? with a Ibanez silver series decal that i bought in the states (they said it was an Electra,Vantage or Univox but i'm not so sure, the tuners and neckplate look like hondo) It plays ace once i had it set it up and put in some good pups and i also have a trusty Westone Thunder 1A Anyway... The Body is ply with a nice wood veneer where the sunburst was finished, i'd hoped it would be solid when i stripped it.I raced to refinish it a while back (very loose term in this case!) and it could be redone really. It was exactly the same as the one you sent except with a B/W/B pickguard and the tele style pup. I changed the pups, scratchplate and (maybe pots/knobs) when i was a 'youth'. Price wise i don't know really, don't want to be too cheeky as it needs tidying up...please save me from Ebay.. make me an offer i'm reasonable. I also have a lovely MIJ Vox bass which is thunderous (yet really heavy) a really underated bass for sale Hope that helps, Cheers Neil
11. Hello Everybody, Up for sale is my Old Maya Made in Japan. This was my first bass from 1989 and has certainly seen some action (along with being lent to many friends over the the years). At some time I stripped the sunburst finish (tut!) and did my own mustard paint DIY job, which you'll lurve or hate (along with replacing the telecaster style pickup and scratchplate/pots and knobs) Other that that it is original. The paint job is pretty poor, but it is laquered and there are plenty of marks consistent with age.The neck still plays well and has aged nicely with knocks and laquer wear. I'd recommend a pickup upgrade ( i think they are cheap JHS pickups from 1991?) Anyway (too much sentimentality) Offers ? would make a good project or beginners bass..Please save me from putting this on Fleabay ( i also have a nice vox standand MIJ for sale) Cheers Neil Central Bristol BS3
12. Hi Basschatters, Up for sale is my old Vox standard bass. This is a reluctant sale as it is an ace bass, but i haven't played it for over 2 years and it sould be being used regualrly.. With the exception of the bridge, nut and rear cover(which are improvments), the bass is all orginal. This a solid and robust bass with great sustain and tone,I find it sounds a halfway house between a Jazz and Precision, The Bass has dings and scratches consistent with age, but nothing major. http://reviews.harmony-central.com/reviews...ndard+Bass/10/1 Spec:- -Made in Japan 82-85 -24 fret maple neck -heavy dense body (maybe ash or mahogany?) -Volume and tone knobs -New Brass nut and set up by Waghorn guitars in Bristol. -Excellent high output, low noise pickups (maybe Dimarzio?) -Pickup phase reversal switch (how this is wired -could be wired series/parallel) -Non original badA*** style bridge. If you reading this, you probably know this is a great MIJ bass. Collection from central Bristol BS3 Please don't let me put this on FleaBay!!! Price ~ £130 Cheers Neil
13. Hi there, Just a general query i'm considering upgrading the pickups and tuners on my highway 1 p bass.Did you also choose to do this? and do you know of a direct replacement tuner, they seem to be smaller that the std gotoh tuners on my old p-bass? Cheers Neil
