This story I’ve repeated elsewhere but I think it’s worth putting on here as well. 2001 Ltd Edition Thumb BO. Sometimes, only sometimes, “the one that got away” swims straight back into your net. I bought this bass in 2003, brand new (despite its year). Gigged with it loads in London, recorded an album.., and then traded it in 2011/12 (not sure) for a Stingray. It quickly went to the top of the list in my head of basses I’d wished I’d never got rid of. And then… it appeared up for sale , on Facebook, this week. Mind blown, messages sent and received, confirmation made, bass purchased. I am so happy. And it’s the beautiful beast of a bass that I remember and with 12 years or so having passed, an instrument I can now appreciate more and make sound even better.

Bought the TC Triple delay yesterday. Sans band I’m happy to noodle around playing ambient stuff nowadays and this is just the ticket. Next purchase will be, I think, a Bass Big Muff Deluxe.

Your best (and worst!) bass gear purchases of 2024?

Great minds! I was sending you a screen shot as you posted your message! -

Another good purchase for me this year was a 4” wide leather strap from The Bass Gallery. Really comfortable. I bought 2 of the same over 10 years ago and they are still going strong. -

Best - 1997 Warwick Streamer Pro-M bought from RichTone in Sheffield. Back playing a Warwick after over a decade without. It’s glorious. Special mention goes out to Jon Shuker for refretting my 74 Jazz Bass. Did a bloody marvellous job of it. Top bloke. Worst - Nux Atlantic. Just poor. @neepheid I’ve got a Digitech Bass Synth Wah if you’re interested. -
On a positive note I’ve heard Captain Beefheart’s Too Much Time being played at my local Morrisons (other supermarkets are available). To say I was pleasantly surprised is an understatement.

Randy Crawford - You Might Need Somebody. Class.

Prince released the album “1999” in 1982. And while thumbs were flying all over the place in the 80s we have the track from that album called “Lady Cab Driver” with its wonderful sparse slap bassline, played by Prince. Funk. Proper.

I got the Glockenklang 2-band. Fitted by the very talented Jon Shuker, who also levelled and cleaned the frets, cleaned the board and gave it a good set up. Very pleased with the preamp. My bass just sounds better, wonderful even.

Have just bought a preamp from Bass Direct. It arrived well under 24 hours of ordering it. I ordered it over the phone, from Mark, having already spoken to him earlier in the day at length about which preamp to get. He couldn’t have been more helpful and patient and we had a good laugh along the way (apparently there’s a clone of me living in Islington but that’s another story).

97 Streamer Pro-M, that’s mine above. I’m after recommendations for a new preamp as I think there is something better sounding than the East preamp that’s in it. Any suggestions? Aguilar?

The Carpenters - Gold Greatist Hits Just beautiful.

@tauzero thanks. The East preamp that has been fitted has added to the wiring but it’s all been neatly done. There’s one zip tie I’ll have to cut (and replace) to give me the required length to pull the barrel completely out. Shouldn’t be an issue. @basstone thanks to you too. Some good points reaffirming what I’ve been thinking, ie a mechanical issue with a loss of, as you say, springiness. I’m twice the age of this bass and much of my springiness has gone! It’s been a few years since I’ve done any soldering but I used to be quite good at it. I’ll send a panicked message to this thread should I become unstuck!

Bless you!

@nige1968 thanks man. I’ve checked the battery and wiring and it’s all good. Yeah it seems that there’s more than few people who get them swapped out quite regularly. It’s an active bass so that’s a lot of in and outs. I think it’s more of a mechanical issue; the lead goes in and out too easily and the signal cuts out with only a little lateral force. I’m guessing at 27 years old it’s just worn out. Ive ordered a Switchcraft barrel jack today. Only 3 wires to solder so it should be relatively straight forward. And it’s a gold one replacing a chrome one which will match the rest of the hardware!

Cardiacs - Bellyeye. Cracking bassline from Jon Poole.

Can anyone recommend or give me a link to the best one I can get and put in my 97 Streamer? Thanks

Prince & the Revolution - Around the World in a Day

Did you do it? Fantastic song from a great album.

I’ve always thought he just switched to the DOD for that part, sounds like it to me but thinking about it if he had a Mutron there to record Sir Psycho Sexy then you’re probably correct.

Used to love them. First I heard was Uplift Mofo, still one of my favourites of theirs. Then really got into them with Mother’s Milk. Loved it but strangely don’t listen to it anymore. As others have said BSSM was the pinnacle. Then John left. Didn’t like One Hot Minute though I did see them at Wembley with Dave N and it was a good gig. John returns and Californication, while being damned good didn’t for me reach the heights of 10 years previous. By the Way is probably the album I listen to most now. I think it’s fantastic and up there with BSSM and Uplift Mofo. Stadium Arcadium could for me lose about 10 tracks. Cannot listen to anything of theirs since 2011 and cannot stand the sound of AK of late. Saw them 5 times from 89 to 2012; disappointingly they were never amazing as much as I wanted them to be. John’s solo stuff has moments of excellence. Flea should’ve kept his Spector. Go watch Fight Like a Brave!

Don’t blink or Something’s afoot! Previous to my earlier communication.., an addition found in excellent condition for £80 which has now gone some way to filling the gap on me board.

The Warm Audio Mutation is one good sounding pedal for sure. Looks cool too! Hmmm, flanger, phaser, flanger, phaser. What to do?
