1. I don't know why Laney don't get more love - they're a kind of like a British (or maybe 'British') Peavey, it seems to me. Good quality kit with decent basic tone with sensible and flexible tone shaping capabilities. I used one of their amps at a rehearsal a while back and was really impressed with it. GLWTS.
2.
I prefer SIT Silencers to be honest. Or GHS Pressurewounds. Those D'Addarios were better when they did them in steel over nickel plated.
Contacted GHS, who tell me that neither the Long nor Short scale sets would be suitable for a medium scale length bass. They recommended Bass Boomers instead which, being roundwounds, sort of misses the point really...
3. His playing with King Crimson especially was a huge influence on me too. Starless remains one of my Top Ten tracks. Fantastic, soulful voice too. RIP John.
4. Thanks for the replies so far folks. I think some of the alternatives mentioned aren't available in medium scale (quelle surprise!) so not too sure if I can cut them down without compromising the winding...
5. Ladies and Gents, I've got a medium scale Zoot Custom fretless arriving in a few weeks time and thought about speccing these as they do a medium scale set in my preferred gauge (45-100) but have no personal experience of them. Any users out there who can offer any insight as to what I can expect? On my fretted I've been using the D'Addario Pro Steels and have been really impressed. Thanks, BC
6. Can we archive/pin this thread please?
7. I contacted Customer Services a few days ago to suggest that, whilst many of us were ecstatic to see the Trace name on new amps again, there were a fairly sizeable number who were disappointed to see the new product bear no resemblance to the kit that name was made on. I asked if it was worth some of us holding our breath for a new, lightweight version of the SMX or something similar. No reply, no acknowledgement so far...
8. In fact the ones that Ghost Bass has just posted, except without the B.
9. Recently changed to 45-100 D'Addario steelies on my Zoot 32", after using 40-95 nickels previously. Much more balanced output and response across the fingerboard to my ear and nice and flexible too.
10.
Can you illuminate how the tweetertone only works with TC cabs ? :-)
I was going to ask the same thing. I have a TC RH750 which I use with a Barefaced BB2 and it certainly 'does something' to my ears...And the something is good too!
11. If you're only in Manchester you're welcome to pop over to Chester and try my Zoot medium scale custom if you like too. If you've not tried a shorter scale bass I'd recommend it. And even if you ultimately find it's not your thing you can at least dismiss it on the basis of experience rather than preconception.
12. You'd think they'd actually do some market research (e.g read Basschat!) before putting their time and trouble into designing a product they feel is worthy enough to relaunch the brand on the back of. In all the 'I wish Trace would...'-type threads the majority have wished for a lightweight SMX. Not necessarily microscopic footprint, simply a lighter weight version of one of the best heads many of us have played through and which was - again, for many of us - the finest iteration of the Trace concept. There's plenty of frigging match boxes with 5 or 6 knobs on out there already FFS. My money will be staying in my wallet and my TC RH750 will remain my go-to for the future by the look of things. Grrr!
13. They'd surely be made by one of the bigger players and badged up as Ashdown, wouldn't they?
14. I do hope it doesn't all add up to a big portion of So What? pie. Maybe they're re-launching the tee-shirts.
15. 'Into the Fire' from In Rock. Always loved 'When A Blind Man Cries' too.
16. Lexicon of Love by ABC. I was precisely the right age (19) to be taken in by the hype on its original release but now find that Trevor Horn's production and Martin Fry's slightly strained delivery create a real barrier to me connecting with it. All style and no substance. I like music that makes me FEEL something and it's too glossy to do that for me.
17. It's been said before but a lighter weight version of the SMX would have the potential to put a smile on a lot of us older players faces...
18.
Anyone bringing anything to sell? Should I bring pocket money?
As my Zoot fretless doesn't look as though it will be ready by the Bash I'll bring my Les Evans fretless (with spare, fretted neck) which I'll be selling to make way for it. This is keeping with the local theme as Les was (maybe still is) based in Aintree.
19.
Some of us live REALLY far away from any decent set up bods. Would anyone know of a good local set up bod who would come in and charge individuals by the hour to do setups? We could book basses in beforehand.
To take Owen's query one step further - even someone who could run a shortish workshop to cover the basics of set up to enable us to do our own perhaps? I always think having the ability to set up your own instrument as you'd want enhances your playing ability nearly as much as musical knowledge.
20.
No still on headstock.i'll put better pics on
My bad. I'd presumed it would be contrasting print but now you say that I can just make out the signature in much lighter lettering. Nice basses I understand, and a very good price. GLWTS.
21. Is it me or has the headstock ID been removed? May be a trick of the light.
22. After seeing a couple of mentions of the Jam Hub in previous posts I googled the product as it sounded and interesting and practical band rehearsal tool, only to find a message on their website front page announcing the closure of the company! So a good, well regarded and innovative product bites the dust. Not for the first or last time, I suppose. Sorry for the slight detour from the OP.
23.
I'll send you my easy to remember pneumonic, however can you clarify first, how easily offended you are, my pneumonic is definitely an adult one.
I'm guessing you probably mean 'mnemonic'?...
24.
I'm sorry, did you say tasteful?
Cheeky!
25. I don't think I'll ever stop buying vinyl and it's been nice to pick the occasional new band whilst they're inclined to release on that format - doesn't stop me buying CD's for bands I'm more tentative about though. Mind you, it's grinding my gears that the new (!) Ultrasound album in vinyl is still in the process of being pressed up and won't be sent out until two weeks after the download's available. What's that about?!
