  1. Toots band were not sympathetic, I thought. Too slickly jazz funk - would have liked to see him front Captain Accident (support)! But what do I know? I paid £62 to see King Crimson last night and walked out at half time!
  2. My Daily Mail story... When a freelance writer, I was commissioned to write a piece on the 50th anniversary of the Beatles playing the Cavern for the first time in 1961. Great! A piece in a national newspaper. Little did I know! I submitted the piece, and found it would go through several hands before publication. Each would tinker with it, often asking me to rewrite bits or add things. Just when I thought it was all sorted, I got a call from (I presume) the features editor herself. Could I mention Heather Mills? Sorry, is that Heather Mills, born 1968? Seven years after this event? Yes! I gritted my teeth, rewrote a paragraph and sat back. Job done. Monday through Friday that week I bought the paper...nothing. Clearly it had missed the anniversary. I called the following week to enquire of its fate. Apparently the piece had appeared in the mock-up put before the editor on the Wednesday, only to be dismissed with a comment like: 'We had the Rolling Stones in yesterday, we don't need the Beatles today...' I did get paid!!!!!
  3. The great Dave Charles from Help Yourself? Indeed I do! Your stock is rising rapidly, my friend...😁
  4. Oh no!😩
  5. Welcome! I was a big fan of Man and Deke Leonard (he was best man, no pun intended, at my wedding) so Rockfield and S Wales are close to my heart...
  6. Not dissing Lee in any way but I was a big fan of Michael ‘Kelly’ Groucutt, who not only played bass for prime time ELO but sang joint lead. Big shoes to fill...
  7. Iain sold me a book, and the deal was effortless. Thank you!
  8. @Chris2112 you are, with respect, talking about two different aidiences. The pub one, where people come in and out at will, and the functions audience which expects entertainment as part of the ‘ticket price’.
  9. I reviewed the 1x15 and 2x10 for a certain guitar-type mag. Happy to mail you my review if you pm me. incidentally they revised my marks out of ten upwards to keep the company happy and advertising! I shan’t be writing for them anymore ...
  10. Hi Ho Silver Lining. That is all!
  11. Best wishes from the guy who sold you your original and long gone Tele bass!
  12. Break a leg!
  13. PM sent!
  14. All Right Now!
  15. That's a yes, then...
  16. I am underwhelmed playing this in any tuning. Yet it goes down a storm. Why?!
  17. The late great Jimmy, yeah - though I suspect he was with Stone the Crows at this time. Died at only 59...three years younger than I am now. Oh for a tenth of his bass/vocal talent.
  18. In 1974 they cancelled on me! Caught them in 2000 but it wasn't the same. I may wait till 2026...
  19. Respectfully disagree with most of those examples. Listen to Mr Big on Free Live and come back to me...
  20. Hello - OP again. My main worry is telling band one I won't be available as much... I hope. They build their social lives round the band and any withdrawal/unavailability is already frowned upon. I can see it all getting a bit sticky! Guess the other alternative is to use the threat of another band to make this one more satisfying, eg changes in repertoire etc.
  21. The gear reviews in any instrument mag are inevitably geared towards the advertisers. And what can you really say about 70 per cent of the stuff which is a minor variation on existing product? A case in point: were Guitar magazine really going to criticise the new Fender MIM range when they featured (and doubtless funded) the impressive origami-style cover? And by the way did you know Guitar (pka Guitar & Bass) has just been sold to the Singaporean owners of Rolling Stone? Neither did I, and I am only a flipping contributor of 12 years standing ...
  22. Bah! I was in a jam this week with Phil Harding off Time Team. I dont know where they dug him up from....😁
  23. This is all good stuff, thank you. Looks like it comes down to telling band two that I am already in a band, and hope that doesn't put them off. More trickily, band one may well say 'if we're not your one and only, you're out'. Which would be a shame as they have and are likely to have more gigs...
