1. My band's drummer has decided he wants a change from playing in a function band and has decided to leave so I'm putting a feeler out to see if any Basschatters know someone who might be interested. Our band has loads of gigs lined up including a few in France at a music festival in the Summer and it looks like we might be back out to Dubai next New Years too. We're also developing our own fan base and will be booking the Islington Carling Academy for our second public performance in Easter after the first one was sold out in the matter of a few hours. The gigs are a lot of fun and there's a family type vibe to the group now we've gotten over band agreement differences. Drop me a PM if you know someone based in London or close outskirts and I'll forward a link to the band site and contact details so we can set up a meeting. Ideally we'd like someone friendly and reliable with professional experience who can make the band their main musical priority. Musically, as a bass player I'm looking for someone who can play with a click track if requested, can trigger samples and is comfortable emulating the exact feels on the covers we play.
2. The Levy's bag I have does the trick. I can fit the Shuttle inside its gig bag inside the pocket of the Levy bag!
3. I have swapped out the tone pump in my Euro 6 for a East U Retro. The sound of the instrument hasn't changed significantly (maybe more headroom and presence) but the sweep mid control gives me a lot more control.
4. I'm going to start planning my own lightweight wedge speaker cab at some point. It's not going to be the most technically efficient and I don't even know what its going to sound like. But I need one for small stages and noone I've approached so far is prepared to build one. Would any owners of a GK 1x15 RBH cab or combo mind sending me the dimensions? I can send you a jpg of a sketch with specific measurements to annotate. many thanks in advance.
5. blimey, if I had a spector 5 already, I'd have your arm off.
6.
if i recall the guy whos company make them for Status died, and the headless tuners have been in short supply for a while (I dont think Status will sell them on their own now). ABM make the tuners but i can only see silver on their web site. http://www.abmmueller.de/index2.html?headless_units.html
The bloke who owned ABM died, but they're still in business after a bit of a review period. Rob told me he redesigned the ABM unit and I understand he gets these Status tuners manufactered in the far east and shipped direct.
7. its a black art. there are probably quite a few different ways to achieve it by balancing the various tonal characters of materials, pickups, construction, hardware, electronics etc. Usually it starts with the wood and either a choice of species or a combination of species that gives rise to a prominent mid-peak somewhere between 250 and 600 Hz. the reason why its a black art is because wood is such an inconsistent material so for a manufacturer to produce consistently growly instruments is a bit of an accomplishment.
8. is it just me or does it look like Anthony Jackson has tiny hands?
9.
The were a lot of quality issues between CLF (Leo Fender's company) and Musicman where MM wasn't happy with what CLF were producing, this ultimately led Leo to give MM the Spanish Archer and start G&L in 1980 or thereabouts. Later ones were made by Grover Jackson's company using mainly left over CLF parts until Ernie Ball bought the company. Post-EB basses have been very consistent so unless there is a specific feature you want such as the Flea bridge or string mutes, there is little to choose between them - oh yeah, they got rid of those hellish flat cut pickup poles that scraped your fingers in favour of the bevelled ones. There have been various changes made to the EQ, most noticably going from the original 2eq to 3eq.
Leo was disappointed with how badly the Stingray guitars were selling and blamed Musicman for that. It has been suggested that he deliberately sabotaged the bass necks that CLF were sub contracted to make for Musicman, after the guitar was dropped from the range, by shipping them with un-anchored truss rods (essentially useless). There were also other supply issues which led to Musicman approaching a number of lesser known luthiers (including Wayne Charvel) to augment the production of bodies. Towards the eventual sale of Musicman to Ernie Ball, the bodies for the basses could have been made from ash, alder, poplar or even (in a couple of cases) mahogany! They were literally chucking instruments together and getting them out the door. There may well be some great basses from that 82-85 era but generally quality control was more than a little lax. IMO, basses from the late 80's are the best value. An 87 or 88 Stingray is better designed, with tighter and more stable neck joint, more consistent woods and finishes. Ernie Ball had something to prove in terms of the branding so the redesign and manufacture was way above the quality of the early 80's instruments.
10.
It'd be easy to implement mathewsanchez's idea through google maps. The forum software shouldn't need modifying at all.
Well I'll leave you and Phatmonkey to sort it out then. Cheers!
11.
A way round the software thing is to create microsites. So, the forum stays as off-the-shelf, but 'new' elements can be linked to seperately constructed web pages.
Thats a point I seem to recall suggesting privately myself at one point to ped and phatmonkey in the distant past. I can't remember why it wasn't given more consideration.
12.
How about a big map where you can place/pin your for sale ads, so you can easily find local basses for sale? Sorry to use big font like some annoying ebay seller but I wanted to get my idea noticed.
Ahem, duly noted. I think its a nice idea but I think I've mentioned previously that if we modify this off-the-shelf forum software, its more difficult to implement upgrades. The alternative is bespoke software which costs probably more than this site could afford at commercial rates (and then there's the ongoing maintenance needed). If I continued the survey I could offer a range of options and ask how much per month would everyone be prepared to pay for having access to that feature. That would give us an idea of where to invest any income. Alternatively it might just mean that forums aren't really capable of generating much investment without huge numbers of members paying a relatively low cost subscription every month.
13. have you considered a cash sale?
14. blimey, that went quick. Here I am wondering if its worth getting two...
15.
Livin in Acton mate, just down the road from the Bush! Don't really do TAB either, I'm teachin myself to sight read... Nice to meet you tho! Where you stayin these days? Safe!
You're in a good location for music schools One of London's best Szechuan restaurants is down Churchfield Street too. I shifted 2 hours north to take up a new job. Hope u enjoy the forums mate.
16. oh yes, the Super Headless. Nice instruments, the gallery had one in a while back. I generally don't like Westones (as an ex-owner of a Spectrum II) but the Super Headless was a nice piece of work.
17.
If you lived 5 mins from Shepherds Bush what difference does it make what part I'm in?
Because its more convenient than travelling 2 hours like I might have to now.
If you were interested in the cab why not message me asking if you could come and try it out, something I would have been more than happy to let you do.
Because I hoped you might answer the question?
18.
Thought you were taking the piss. If you wanted it why not say so.
if you'd answered the question we'd both be a bit wiser now, wouldn't we?
ooerrr disquiet in the ranks.........being these are neos arnt they a lightweight solution?
lightest cab I've ever owned. Sounds superb, the only crit I'd make is that they're not braced enough, but that could be an easy sort if you're handy with a bit of DIY.
19. no response to my post? I was literally 5 mins down the road from you until Christmas.
20. I'm probably going to build my own 1x15 wedges. Or maybe buy a pair of active 1x15 PA wedges.
21. dude, I wonder if you're serious.
22. What kind of security are you anticipating having to offer anyone?
23.
I'm not 100% sure if it's compatible as i've only used it with XP on this comp. It'd look really cool on Vista though!! Translucent mixer/effects windows, mmmmm...
Yeah, I'll need to find the time to do a test install on my laptop this week I guess. Assuming you haven't sold it in that time, of course.
24. Hmmmmmmm...I wonder if I can get Pro Tools to work under Vista...
25. blimey, my 10 piece band is a walk in the park by comparison. Nice job holding the low end down BTW!
