A mate of mine is after a 200 gauge bass string, I suspect he's tuning down to a low F# - anyone know where he can get one?

My G&L has no tone control, just volume/volume for the two pickups, so I adjust the volumes to get a tone I like (normally about 80% on the P / 20% on the J) and then input gains on the head for taste and then master volume to a level where I can hear myself clearly

I'd really like to play some Sabbath too - pretty much anything from the first three albums. Unfortunately this goes contrary to my current project of modernising the set-list before wedding season kicks off.

My old EBS rig: Fafner and Proline 4x10, clear, deep, punchy - just lovely. My current set-up - Genz STM900 into a Barefaced Gen 1 Compact is pretty tasty too now I've got more to grips with how to get the best out of it.

I think you'll be pleased that I think it sounds very little like Cradle Nailed that Dilinger/Meshuggah vibe, I'd certainly come see you if you played locally.

It'll be a ceramic driver but paper cone :-)

Thanks for that comprehensive reply Dingus :-) Interesting he played Precisions for the first three albums, I'd have guessed Master Of Reality was something else, particularly as I really dislike his tone on that record.

Anyone know what basses Geezer used to record each Sabbath album? Was listening to Volume 4 earlier and got thinking about the different tones he seemed to have on each record and which I liked the most (Paranoid) and started wondering what bass he used on each one. He seems to change quite frequently, so I have no idea what he played on which album except it looks like he recorded the first album with a Precision from the sleeve notes.

A Dingwall AB1 5 string, though I'm about £2.5k short........

I think Rex Brown of Pantera/Down gets overshadowed by the guitarists in those bands, but is a remarkably good player in his own right (turned down a jazz scholarship to go on tour with Pantera); as can he heard on Five Minutes Alone by Pantera and Ghost Along The Missisipi by Down. I would also put Caleb Schofield of Cave In and Dave Edwardson of Neurosis in the underrated camp.

My Genz Streamliner is working more or less as intended - has an intermittent fault with the LED unit that is more trouble to fix than it's worth.

Definitely look used, your budget will go a lot further, I'd look at Warwick (not Rockbass), you should be able to get a bolt on model easily with your budget. At the top end, you might be able to get a G&L USA L2500 or Stingray 5 as these seem to go for between £700-800 used, so if you're not too fussed on condition and negotiate a bit you may be in luck. Yamaha are also another brand to look at, a mate of mine picked up a 6 string Yamaha recently that's great for about £400 If super jazzes are more your thing

I don't know why, but I keep liking the look of single cuts recently, I've always disliked them in the past.
