1. I'm having a clear out and i've decided its time to do away with project basses that i've never got round to starting/completing, so first up is a 1970s Vox VG4 Hollowbody Shortscale bass. I bought this blind on eBay years ago and when I received it quickly realised it would take greater expertise than mine to recover. This would be ideal for someone looking for a major restoration project. I believe it has all the original hardware, and although the electronics do not work (I tried to fix them to no avail), the rattling sound inside the body would indicate that where the original switches and pots are missing, they are still attached inside the bass. The action is extremely high, and i'm not sure whether or not this is due to the neck being quite heavily bowed between the 1st and 7th fret area. Some of the lacquer on the neck and back has cracked, although this appears only superficial. Somebody before me has attempted to remove the binding on the back of the bass too, along the bridge-end. I imagine this would have been done to attempt to recover the electronics. I've tried to detail any and all major damage in the pictures, if you'd like more please PM me and I can take further shots. Could it get any more smart@arsed and plain wrong than this?
Oh yes. Yes it can. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XSTH-9h4tN8 A DJ once played this in the bar I work at. Just plain horrible.

11. I'm currently working on a recording project covering Queens Of The Stone Age's track No One Knows - i'm pretty sure most people will be familiar with the bass solo/break that the track builds up to, and as I'm going to be laying this down in a few weeks, I was wondering if anyone could answer a few questions for me: 1. Does Nick Oliveri record this track with a pick or his fingers, or both? The video seems to show him playing with both. 2. Aside from using a vintage P-Bass, does anybody know what amps or effects were used for the bass tone? I'm fairly sure he's done a few Bass Player interviews over the years and if anyone who has seen them could shed some light it would really help! Cheers, Martyn
12. Hi, This isn't exactly bass-related but I guess it does relate to my home audio set-up, so here goes: My girlfriend owns a Harman Kardon SoundSticks speaker set-up (http://store.apple.c...68ZM/A?fnode=4f), and after a recent party, the jack on the end of the cable was damaged. My soldering skills are probably nowhere near good enough to do a decent job of replacing the jack, so are there any BassChatters in the Manchester area who would be able to provide a decent fix? I can provide pictures if anybody needs them, I imagine its a pretty simple repair, i'd just like to have it done as professionally as possible and thought this would be the place to ask! Cheers!
13. For me, if you're setting up a home studio for the first time, the Rode NT1A is a great choice for a multi-purpose mic - I've used it recently on guitars and drums and its fantastic. SE make brilliant microphones too, if you've got a bit bigger budget then their SE3 stereo matched pair are a great investment. The C414 that's been mentioned is excellent too, and has the ability to switch polar patterns, so for the expense you get an incredibly versatile mic that can be used in a variety of styles. If you're looking for a few different types of mic then it would be worth getting dynamic as well as condenser mics. The SM57 has been used massively over the years and works well on a budget, although if you;re looking more expensive, have a look at something like the Sennheiser MD421, which is probably my favourite dynamic at the moment.
