  1. MATAMP BLACK 410 £300 8 ohms 1400 watts It's the ceramic speaker one, sealed, I was previously using a pair of berg HDs which I loved but I needed a bit more oomph for big stages or gigs without serious PA and this matamp certainly has it, its capable of the kind of thundering low end I've only got from big ported cabs and tight focused low mids that you only get from sealed cabs, I'm selling it cos I have steps up to my house and I do all sorts of gigs often in central london so lugging it around is a bit much for me but, if I was doing more of a regular band thing I'd defintely keep it, imo you'd have to spend a fortune on a big aguilar DB or berg HD to get a big old school sound with loads of power like this. I'm in crystal palace south london if you wanna try it out , bring your head or use my orange ad200b I gig all over the place so could maybe deliver if it worked out Trade for aguilar db 210 or 212,sansamp , p bass not necessarily a fender, semi bass ,valve amp , cash adjustment either way [attachment=217294:20160418_140128.jpg] [attachment=217295:20160418_140107.jpg]
  2. Yeah that makes sense , I had gamut too and I liked them . My neighbour is a pro straight player who does early music so I'm gonna quiz him tomorrow about the other gut brands
  3. Yeah I found guts more problematic with board noise and I expected guts to start fraying but mine didn't they went dead and creaky sounding, I then stopped using that bass for a bit and when I took it to laurence for a check up he suggested planing the board again and said the guts had worn it particularly the g. I'd thought steels would be harder on the board but maybe not? I'm on evah now but I'm gonna go gut D and G,which brand guts have you tried mtroun?
  4. Just been doing a tour of really hard ( for me anyway) tunes and I suggested we play a standard or two so I've been taking the head on I Loves You Porgy, works really well on the bass especially in F
  5. You make some good points jaywalker , I not sure how achievable larry's incredibly strong time and complex rhythmic language is , like you say it's cyclical but I would say that some of the old school guys such as Mcbride ,Rodney whittaker ,carlos henriquez play with a rythmic and harmonic fluency I don't hear on the old records. PC didn't move with the times although his his thing is in some ways more sophisticated than than ron and jimmy, PC was only 2 years older than ron and was so so prodigious in his early 20s You guys are right the discussion is all good
  6. Who was the "best" then bilbo? What is it with Internet forums ,the recommendation of a fantastic book has ended up with pops foster,Paul chambers and Larry grenadier ( for me the best players of there respective generations) being slagged off
  7. My Bryant took a lot of work to get to its best too , I recently had the board planed again by laurence and it feels and sounds great again . It does seem to be an ongoing thing though particularly with new basses, I've got an old Germany that's a lot lower maintenance
  8. Absolutely spot on mtroun
  9. Jaywalker are you seriously suggesting that pops foster should be omitted from a book about the jazz bass tradition?
  10. What strange proportions,might be worth a punt at a £200 ish ?
  11. There was one on here a few weeks ago for £400
  12. There was one here a few weeks ago for £400
  13. Location ?
  14. I'm gigging in bowness on solway on Feb 27th if you fancy a drive
  15. it wouldn't worry the neck, you often see different strings to suit a certain bass, i've had all sorts of combinations of steel , gut and synthetic over the years
