    Looking at the frequency graphs, it looks like the Mackie is nearly 10DB more efficient than the JBL. Two of them will less than that though, about 6-7DB but still quite a lot. Also, do you split the subs, try them next to each other, might make a lot of difference as well.

    Is one pot marked A and the other marked B? A is log and should be volume and B is lin and should be tone. Have you reversed them as that would result in what you're getting.

    I used to know a bloke who jammed rolled up, old socks between the spider and the frame to stop this very thing. I'd go for and after-market re-cone.

    Used to own one in the early 80s. Nice bass but didn't get on with the short scale. I used to have to play the bottom string with only half the force of the other string or the notes would go sharp. It's the way I play, I can't help it.

    Trace Elliot started life as a P.A. company and their first bass gear was, unsurprisingly, P.A. cabs with P.A. power amps and a bass preamp. Trace Elliot were quite popular at one time you know. Might be going full circle here.
