I'm a heavy player too - (I migrated from drums you see) Whilst generally heavier gauge strings take a bit more of a pluck, I've found its more about the tension than the weight. I'm using Optima strings at the moment and they are considerably stiffer. I've also used the DR Lo-Riders in the past with a similar experience, they are stiffer than their Hi-Beam counterparts. For a while I used 50-110, I even tried 55-110, but on the Optima (Gold) now I'm back to 45-105 and no hitting the frets on an open string twang for me

I think there is one called SpeakerDraft by Faber Acoustical. but its 13.99!!

Yes maybe thats a good plan Oli. If someone wanted to let people know about one they've seen, get the sellers details first, then they could post it and details can be exchanged via PM. I'm sure BC isn't the only source of this info, and eBay, TB etc are regularly patrolled - simply because they have to be seen to go after someone and they can't/won't go after the people that actually make the fakers... But now that BC is known, with a stickied thread no less its pretty easy to catch one that might have been missed...

You know that as soon as one gets posted in here it will be removed from eBay in a matter of hours right? I believe the Rickenwaffen patrol this post pretty regularly now...

Have you tried these? I have them on my basses and much prefer them to the Schaller / Dunlop ones, especially the plastic rotating disc kind that either snap or come undone.
There is another way to all this if you prefer the narrow string spacing of a jazz neck. The nut width does not in itself determine string spacing but the string slots themselves. I used a Precision sized neck on my custom fretless but have cut the string slots closer together like a Jazz. If you want Jazz bass string spacing on your Precision why not try a freshly cut nut first and you can have the best of both worlds!
That sounds horrid, but I have not tried it, so maybe its not so bad. Don't you find the extra wood just gets in the way?

Recommended replacement Jazz Pickups/Pre
brensabre79 replied to MarshallBTB's topic in Repairs and Technical
Not that familiar with the 605, has it got Jazz bass style pickups, soapbars or Yamaha's PJ stylee ones? If its the latter you may well be stuck, however if its the Jazz Bass style ones like the pic, then there's a load of pickups available, and it depends what you like (old school growl, modern clarity etc. etc.) as to what works best for you... If you want to go passive then you're going to struggle to fill all those holes to be honest, but you could consider: Volume for each pickup, tone for each pickups, pickup selector switch and master volume (although probably a bit redundant) -
Someone please tell me how to wire a P/J
brensabre79 replied to Jimryan's topic in Repairs and Technical
The capacitor on the tone pot is essential, without it its just a volume control! -
Having said that... You can have your choice of the heavier amps at this price and even a few of the new lightweight ones. Do have a look in the For Sale section here, but Eden, GK and Glockenklang all very good, but all have their own sound. It might help to read a few reviews on the interweb and decide what sort of sound you want... old school warmth vs modern clean depth etc.

I was very disappointed when I read this post

As its original material (I assume as you said not covers) you might wanna trim down the influences list a bit - or better still post a link to what (aside from all those influences) your stuff is like. When I saw the list of influences I thought it was covers/pub band, when I saw unpaid as well I must confess I nearly closed the page completely until I saw not covers and realised what you were sayin Also I know it seems daft but a good bass player, who is available to do unpaid gigs, playing stuff they've never heard of, who lives nearby, is all too rare these days! Drummers even more so!

Pickguard for fender blacktop jazz
brensabre79 replied to Blackbird88's topic in Repairs and Technical
Yeah I know its wiers innit? but that red tortie looks cool fella! Be careful ordering those tortie scratchplates though, some are really flat/cheap looking because they are just printed on. -
Pickguard for fender blacktop jazz
brensabre79 replied to Blackbird88's topic in Repairs and Technical
I think it looks better with the classic metal one to be honest. Fender did do a Jazz bass with a one piece white plastic pickguard/control plate combo for a while in the early 80s - these are the ones where cost cutting reached ridiculous levels and are widely regarded as being mostly utter pants. So I imagine not many people would want to make their bass look like one of those! -

If WD Music in the US do them they will send to WD Music in the UK. You can give WD UK a call/email and ask them, they can usually get anything off the US site sent over. I've always found them pretty helpful. I'm sure there are a few people on here who can make scratchplates to order - from a template. Personally I wouldn't go for the all-in-one with the control plate, but thats just me. No reason why you can't except to ensure everything is electrically shielded properly. Often the metal control plate carries the shielding along the controls so you might have to link up the pot cases inside... -
Semi-Acoustic bass case/bag suggestions
brensabre79 replied to jalapeno's topic in Accessories and Misc
You might be surprised how well it fits in a normal electric bass case actually. I was when I got my Ibanez semi-acoustic. It fits in my cheaper gig bags, but not the Ritter ones which are a tight fit even for my Jazz bass. If you're near a music shop, mosey on down with your bass and see what they got... -
About "naming and shaming" - my thread as well as in general
brensabre79 replied to BassTractor's topic in General Discussion
So have Ernie Ball apologised publically to ProMusicTools for the damage their mistake caused?
I don't think they need to, they only need to apologise to BassTractor - which I believe they have done. -
if you get the right cabs you dont need as much eq in the amp IME...
Agree with this, just like mic'ing the sound correctly at source means you don't need to process so much. I'd never run an amp flat until I got my Barefaced speaker!

I spoke to Marshall before Xmas as I was looking to try out and buy an Eden WT800. Basically they will not send stuff out to dealers on Sale or Return at the moment. They say that dealers are very reluctant to buy in stock knowing that they will be stuck with it (Eden stuff doesn't exactly fly off the shelves), also, most dealers suspect that aspart of the buy out they will be developing new products and releasing them soon. So the catch is, no dealers will buy in stock, so there's nowhere I can go nearby to try one out. I'm not about to buy an amp I have not tried! I said to Marshall/Eden rep that they should really consider sending some out SOR to get the name known again, but unfortunately they don't seem to keen to do that. I guess as Marshall is a household name they have never needed to do this. Personally I was put off by the fact that there seemed to be a large amount of indifference, from the music shop, from Marshall, and even from Eden US, who basically sent me back to Marshall.

I did it for a while when a band I was in were doing venues with in house PA. Never again. The last gig I did this (the one I decided that I would take a small combo for monitoring) I spent the first 3 songs of the set asking for more in the monitor wedge, before realising (when I looked down) that the cone of the driver had a 2" hole in it! I could feel the bass coming from the FOH, but it was just low low frequencies, without any definition or pitch. SO I spent the rest of the gig looking at my lined fingerboard (thank goodness I went for lines!) and hoping that whatever the audience could hear wasn't too offensive. If its your own PA, no problem as you have some control over it, but if you are relying on someone else for your sound forget it.

Genz Benz Streamliner internal light - anyone changed a blown bulb?
brensabre79 replied to Paul S's topic in Amps and Cabs
Genz Benz are pretty helpful, even if you're not the original owner. If you do go over to Talkbass the aforementioned Agedhorse works at GenzBenz on designing and testing their products, so he will be pretty knowledgeable!
