i really want this, cant afford it! lets see if i can sell stuff quick enough to fund it! how are the lows on this? ill only be using it as a power amp anyway really if i get it
It's a valve preamp witha digital power amp so if you're just using the power amp rather than combining it with the pre I've no experience of doing that, would suggest you try one out first? -

I hav an nxt4 and it has a passive pickup so either needs an active di box or a preamp...I hav a Fishman platinum pro bass and the combination is great
More and more these days, sadly; seems that a phantom switch per channel is solely the preserve of four-figure+ professional units now Reading into it, I guess it's only an issue if your phantom regulating resistors are out, which condensers wouldn't be all that bothered by but which'd cause a d.c current through a transformer-less dynamic capsule; I was under the impression that removing the transformer would essentially unbalance the mic as the transformer centre-tap would be earthed, but apparently only the mic body is connected to earth. Ignore me, it's been a long week
all good, I've had one too!
A real mod, I would imagine, to be implemented only by eejits; you're right, phantom power will then be shorted across the capsule which would likely cause damage to the mic and /or the desk's phantom supply. Unless I'm missing something...but I'm sure I'm not (I came across a cheap Chinese fake 58 last year which had no transformer at all, wouldn't use it for that reason...)
Actually, the phantom power issue is not technically proven, I do know someone who has done this and he is well pleased with the results... I guess some noddy desks have phantom power on or off for the whole desk but generally it shouldn't be an issue...
Thanks Bassace. I don't own the Stagg anymore as I was spending more time on fretless. To start again, would it be better to pick up a 2nd hand Steinberger or not spend the extra and pick up a second hand Stagg? I have read some horror stories regarding the Stagg in terms of build quality. Thankfully our one was fine. I think you can pick up a Steinberger for aroung £400 second hand.
I got my NXT for £450, I added a fishman platimun pro preamp and reckon it sounds close enough to my mates orchestral double bass when recorded that I'm happy with it

http://recordinghacks.com/microphones/Shure/SM57 "What are popular mods for the SM57 (also works for SM58) Remove the transformer. This is a 15-minute mod that was described in detail in the Mar/Apr 2006 issue (#52) of TapeOp; essentially, use boiling water or a heat gun to soften the glue holding the transformer in the bottom half of the mic body (note: do not boil the capsule), then connect the wires from the XLR jack straight to the capsule This mod is reported to extend the frequency range of the mic, especially at the low end. It reduces the midrange honk. Some modders claim it improves transient response. However, it lowers the mic’s output by about 10dB (perhaps making it unsuitable for quiet sources)."

a mate of mine is a pro sound chap on a budget and is in a band with a screamer, he did something like took an sm58 apart and boiled the electrical innerds (excluding the diaphragm obviously) to get rid of something (I can't remember what) but apparently it's made a huge difference to the sound, got rid of the nasty mid hump and made it way better for screaming...try googling it...?

A pair of planet Waves jack to jacks with gold plated jack ends. 20ft in length, superb condition, selling cos I've switched to obbm's cables and have no space to keep these... A great upgrade from piranha and other brands, were £25 each when new, they've had very light use and show no signs of any wear... £15 each incl postage or £25 for the pair? offers...?
I eventually chose the Aspiration Elite and aside form a bit of light fret work and a set up, it's being gigged regularly and sounds excellent. Here's a pic of it in action
the mahogany one yes? looks purdy!
