NAD - Peavey MiniMAX™ 500 Watt Bass Amplifier Head *Review*
machinehead replied to discreet's topic in Amps and Cabs
I've been thinking about one of these to pair with my BF Super Midget. They seem to tick a lot of boxes. I'll be really interested in hearing your thoughts/experiences with it. Frank. -
Thanks guys. Looks like it's going to be the 750 then. Frank.

You might be pleasantly surprised at how capable a single Big Baby 2 is for tone and volume. To answer your question, I think your TE cab will be the limiting factor if paired with the BB2. It's liable to reach it's limits before the BB2 does. Frank.

Thanks dood. I watched your review. Very comprehensive!! Has anyone been able to compare both versions? Frank.

Help!!! Need advice on cabs and ohms
machinehead replied to Thestonekid's topic in General Discussion
Yep, a second 4x10 is the way I'd do it. The 1x15 would be a bad match. Frank. -
Has anyone owned, tried or gigged with both the Reidmar 250w and the Reidmar 750w? I'm considering buying a Reidmar and I've read that the 250w version is louder than you might expect given the power rating. I do like to have lots of power in reserve in an amp and if I know that the 750w has a genuine upgrade in the power supply then I'm willing to spend the additional money. There's about £180 price hike for the 750w version. Thanks for any advice offered. Frank.

NRD - New Rig Day - Mesa Boogie Subway D800 + 115 + 112
machinehead replied to sPiKi's topic in Amps and Cabs
An excellent review! That barge is a difficult gig sound wise. I'm certain your new rig will sound better and more easily managed in a normal pub/hotel type venue. Anyway, I'm glad you enjoyed it. Frank. -

That is a quality looking rig. The barge is a great venue but you'll need only one of those cabs. Are you playing around Belfast this Saturday? I'd also love to hear your new toys. Frank. -
I still regret selling my CMD121P combo! I found it so useful for rehearsals and pub gigs. I had a 15" Traveller cab at the same time and the two combined seemed to work OK for bigger gigs. Anyway, I hope you get sorted. Frank.

It's not easy to get the specs of the Markbass speakers but I'd guess the Black Line is cheaper because it has cheaper speakers. I would prefer to get two identical cabs even it was more expensive, but that's just me. Frank.

You won't regret it. Best cab I've owned. Frank.

Nice review. Thanks for taking the trouble. I think you'll also notice an improvement in the volume and tone after they are used for a few hours in anger. And yes, I only need the one cab 99% of gigs, but it's nice to have a second in reserve just in case. Frank.

That's a lovely compact little rig. It makes either of my combos look positively bulky. I fancy a ONE10 with one of the new Peavey MiniMax amps. At a total cost of around £600 that would serve well as my rehearsal and small venue gig setup. Looking forward to reading your review. Frank.

Hey modelreject. Regarding chris_b post above. I have a Barefaced BB2 and a Super Midget and I'm in Belfast. Get in touch by PM if you want to hear them. (They are NOT for sale though. ) And chris_b is correct in that the Barefaced cabs do outperform the Markbass cabs for volume and tone, although tone is subjective. Frank.

Barefaced Big Twin. Do i take the plunge?
machinehead replied to Ant_On_Bass's topic in Amps and Cabs
JUK said "I do recall a 'friend's band having massive problems with a room with a Warwick and a GK combo and he couldn't dial the bass boom out for love or money. It ruined and took over their sound check Our sound went straight up and was complete in around 15 mins. Their bass player had to play thru the monitors and ditched his amp." JTUK, although I don't know you personally, I know from your posts that you know a lot about bass guitars, amps, PA and sound in general, so I know you're an expert in these matters. What puzzles me from your post above is this - why did you not help your bass player friend to sort out his sound? Surely you could have done this in a few minutes. It seems to be so unlike your willingness to offer advice on basschat. Frank. -
Matchetts in Belfast stock Markbass. I've owned CMD121P, two Traveller 2 x 10s and more Markbass gear. The combo is handy but my choice would be a LMII and one or two Traveller 2 x 10. Frank.

Barefaced Big Twin. Do i take the plunge?
machinehead replied to Ant_On_Bass's topic in Amps and Cabs
The difference between solo and in a band mix is the volume. Not all cabs sound the same at high volume as they do at low volume. So your nice sound at home or solo might be boomy on a gig, as an example, or your cab might not fill the stage very well making it harder for the band to hear your bass. There are many other differences. Frank. -
Barefaced Big Twin. Do i take the plunge?
machinehead replied to Ant_On_Bass's topic in Amps and Cabs
I can't use the bloody quote function so this is a copy/paste. Stevie posted "I played at a small festival last year where they provided a Markbass rig. An LMIII with a 15" and 2x10"s. It was horrible. Boomy, no definition, difficult to hear, soggy. I am familiar with the amp and did my best, but every other player who used it sounded bad. I certainly wouldn't like to make a judgement on that gear based on my gigging experience of it." Surely you just did Stevie. And that's how the gear in question performed in that real-world situation. Frank. -

machinehead replied to Ant_On_Bass's topic in Amps and Cabs
Stevie. Your points are good and well made. I still think, if you gig regularly , and in different venues, then the best trials are in the intended end-use environment. But I did say testing on a gig was best for me. It just works best for me and I remain unimpressed by opinions formed solely in music shops or similar. Testing at a rehearsal is certainly better than without a band like say, in a shop. Not going to disagree there. And I don't dismiss trying a cab without a band - it's obviously possible to tell quite a lot but the live, real-life performance is what counts for me. I also agree about a good technical inspection. Many years spent as an electrical engineer (and electrician before that) and having specified and bought PA systems worth around £100K, you would expect me to be fussy over technical issues. So it looks to me that we agree on a lot, and I'm thinking most musicians will ignore what they read on the internet anyway and make their own judgements. So why have I spent time typing this? Frank. -
Barefaced Big Twin. Do i take the plunge?
machinehead replied to Ant_On_Bass's topic in Amps and Cabs
Stevie, my point is that the poster was listening with his eyes. However, I disagree that five minutes is a sufficient test for a bass cab, at least, it definitely isn't for me. That five minutes is unlikely to be at a gig, with a full band, at high-ish volume, with different amps and in different rooms. I have no axe to grind over Barefaced cabs. I happen to like them, but there are other cabs I like too. Like others have said, it's amazing how they polarise opinions. I suspect it's not only to do with how they perform. Frank. Frank. -

machinehead replied to Ant_On_Bass's topic in Amps and Cabs
I find that it takes a while to get to know a cab, (This applies to all gear really.) So I've never expressed a view here of a cab I haven't gigged for several gigs at least. I don't feel qualified to comment otherwise. So as far as the Barefaced argument goes, or any other cab manufacturer, I've always read the comments of the inexperienced with a pinch of salt. One poster even posted about Barefaced cabs that he'd tried and didn't like.... "No, but to be fair, I didn't like the look of the cab from the off so 5 mins or less was enough. " That's neither an open minded trial or a fair trial and certainly doesn't add to a balanced argument on the forum. Frank. -
I had both tennis and golfer's elbow in my right arm at the same time last year. Very painful indeed. I didn't have any physiotherapy though and it healed itself in 6 months or thereabouts. It did make bass playing a nightmare but I took painkillers which did virtually FA. Frank.

My view?... I think you'd be mad to buy a bass you think won't suit you, just because of the year you were born. Just my thought. Others will no doubt, disagree. Frank.
