New Band
Agadoo, Black Lace
Never thought of that one Suppose Russ Abbott's Atmosphere could follow it up. Keep em coming!
2. I've been asked to play in a new covers band that is being setup by a drummer I used to play with years ago. The members so far all seem to have similar tastes in music, mainly rock but anything goes really as long as we enjoy playing it. We need to come up with a set list of some floor filling, foot tapping top tunes, so what songs would you guys recommend? I don't want to skew the suggestions so I won't make any myself Pete.
3. It's for shielding against electrical interference, usually mains hum but also radio. Generally copper foil or conductive paint is used, this is then grounded. Hope this helps, Pete.
4.
+1 on Jaco.
+ another 1 here! I'd never heard of him till I joined this forum. Also I'm the bloke that doesn't like motown, can't be doing with the drum sound - grates on me. Better leave the forum now I guess lol. P.
5. Yeah, I had two covers custom made about a year ago. They are superb quality and well manufactured. I'd certainly buy from them again. Pete.
6. Hey Steve, his names not Rick is it? If it's the guy I'm thinking of there's a silent P at the start of his name. Pete.
7. I use a tiny amount from a tube of Electrolube multi purpose grease I've had for about 20 years. Pete.
8. I own the custom built MM Sterling in this video (you don't really get to see in until about 3 mins in): Pete.
9.
Has anyone used this rack tuner before? I started using it for the first time today and I found its not reading the lower notes on my bass like the low B etc. Even if I hit the harmonic on the 12th it takes a few seconds to register on the tuner! I tried using the auto calibration to fix it but it didnt make a difference. Anyone got any ideas?
I bought one and flogged it to our guitarist within the week, it just could't track a low B and even struggled with an E. So in my humble opinion it was sh*te Bought the Korg version and it is superb (okay at about 100 quid more it should be), almost instant readings and it has blue LEDs (they are actually much more accurate than red ones, I read that on the Internet so it must be true) Pete.
10. Ive been listening to Stadium Arcadium, and think there are some excellent songs on there. Okay they may not be the most complex works but they are melodic and really listenable (is there such a word?), it's the only music I've had on in my car for a few weeks. Back on topic, I found myself in the same situation as you Bigwan when I took up playing again last year after a long break. I'd always played rock with a pick (in originals bands) and wanted to learn new styles (both music and methods of playing). So I binned my picks and started to learn fingerstyle, I found that also led to me wanting to play different types of music. Attending the local jam night has also helped me diversify, we get a variety of musical types there. Bassists are a bit thin on the ground so I get to play various styles and learn a lot on the fly. More recently, I've become a bit of a slapper that's got me into more musical genres. I've even added a few slappy bits into some of our bands tunes, hopefully without being too OTT and naff lol. Pete.

13.
This was recently discovered in a tomb in Luxor alongside a dusty Ampeg B15
Excellent LMAO
14. I do the lead through the strap thing. No longer do the lead through the amp handle after a bad experience once on a big stage. I got carried away and toppled my rig oops
15. Awww that's a beaut and close to me too. But I already have a ray, so have a bump on me! Good luck with the sale, Pete.
16. Billy Bad Breaks anyone? I play that to warm up, great bass ditty! Pete.

GAK
'Thomann' Every time I read unqualified and broad brush statements like this I wince. I've had a great many dealings with Thomann and they have all been exemplary, basically couldn't have possibly been better. This includes warranty returns of gear. It's not just my good fortune I'm sure. I know all companies get it wrong sometimes but my experience and that of many others dispels your statement. I've had one dealing with GAK, ordered something online and it wasn't in stock. I'm sure they're great most of the time. The impact of sweeping statements on business in a forum such as this can be immense especially for the smaller businesses so I'd ask that we consider our damning statement before blasting them into the internet bass community. No I don't work for Thomann. Peter
+1 to that. Never dealt with GAK though. Pete.
18.
Do you play a piglet with your foot or what?
I'd imagine like bagpipes Just read this thread, some interesting posts and opinions. Going to go and practice some things I never usually do now! Thanks guys, Pete.

SLF

Seen them a few times live. Well worth going, excellent live! http://www.slf.com/live.htm Pete.
20. No mention of FNM's Billy Gould so far, biggest influence on me in the 80's I reckon. Also Paul Gray on The Damned's Black Album from 1980 some outstanding bass riffs. Pete.
21. I don't think I'll be bothering to learn sweeping after seeing the vids, just seems like a mushy fret w***ing noise - I'll leave that to the guitarist. Pete.
22. Don't understand the suggestion for putting a Fender logo on? It's not a Fender! How does it currently play and sound?
23. I think it depends on the quality of the musicians. Would anyone put Flea at the bottom?
24. Assuming it's solid state, the output transistors will overheat and eventually fail unless there's some form of protection circuit in which case it would just cut out. If it's a valve amp, the output transformer will most likely cook. Pete.
