the man is looking for DVDs!!! I would recommend the wooten and larry graham dvds. both have killer ideas and techiques. worth more than how-2 guide imho.

In my opinion you should never need to touch an amp at a gig, apart from adjusting the volume. set it once and let your hands and bass do all the work. my swr is great for this, i rarely tweak the tone past flat!!

Here's my bit: Forget Me Nots - Patrice Rushen Freddie Washington is the dude! slap bass that is actually tasteful Peg - Steely Dan Chuck Rainey brilliant pop/rock bass from 60's/70's, perfect playing. You Know Me, You Love Me - Chaka Khan Anthony Jackson, brilliant counterpoint line to melody in chorus, drives the tune along with brilliant timing. Still can't belive he wrote the bassline to "the love of money" when he was 19!!!! Solid Air - John Martyn Danny Thompson really dominated the Uk folk scene in 60's, and it understandable when you hear this track. lead melody, counterpoint, tritone subs, the dude slips so much in!! but its never seems like its over played, and the song was supposed to sound like that. Blue Train/ So What - John Coltrane/Miles Davis Paul Chambers changed so much with his approach and feel to double bass, he really keeps songs moving along with pushing lines onwards. his bowed solo in blue train is something special and change the image of bassist. the So What melody is classic, a moment in modern music which is timeless! Orion - Metallica Cliff Burton!! What else is there to say??? Whats Going On - Marvin Gaye Does it get any better than this? Jamerson is the granddaddy of Pop bass, without him No McCartney, No Rainey, No Dunn etc The man broke/made the rules of modern electric bass, was THE FIRST!!!

if you are really set on going on to uni go for guild hall or trinity. royal college dont except electric bass, and have more of a classical sense of learning. I've come through a trinity course and would say that the association with other musicians was the thing that pushed me forward. getting introduced to new artist and styles from new friends is great, and it really help me to develop as a player and my knowledge of music. i would agree that 90% of music is self taught, and going to these universities will only benefit you if YOU want to learn what THEY TEACH. I made the choice not to go in to massive debt, and to search out some brilliant one to one tutors. mike mondesir, stuart clayton, Randy Hope-Taylor, Steve lawson and Stevie Lewinson have all given me one to one lessons, and i've moved on with them and their own opinions than one department of one uni! hope this is a help! both routes will help you get there, but its you who's got to work at it. jaco never went to uni to study jazz, nor did miles (he dropped out of a classical course). you can make it whatever!!!!

[attachment=5080:flightcase.jpg] Another part of my gear selection has to go, my trusty 4U flightcase. I had my bass head mounded in this very tough case and it dig a fantastic job. sold the head, and so its just sitting around doing nothing! its a rockcase model (warwick), which has been out gigging and has one knock, but it is in good condition. these cases are designed to project valuable rigs and to take all of the abuse a roadie can subject. mine was chucked into the back of a transit, and caught a lovely rip in the vinyl. the wood has no marking, and it is purely superfisual. have checked everything today, and it is in A1 condition apart from the rip. I am open to offers. PM me [attachment=5081:flightcaseinside.jpg] Here's the mark [attachment=5083:flightcasemark.jpg] will post another of the mark closer!

after studying alot of groove dragging and pulling i was amazed by flea from chili peppers! I could of lied from blood sex sugar magic has an amazing feel. each of the players have there own space where they are playing, flea sits right down the middle. its all very loose, but because its a constant idea it creates a groove. listen again to the song and you will dig what i'm trying to say!

I was there on saturday!!! what a night? did anyone else stay to see thomas lang after??? wayne is the master of effortless mastery, out a sea of notes wayne can pick just one note that kills you. his phrasing is amazing, so emotionally driven but void of all crap! i doubt i will see him again, he looked very frail and weak when not playing. hope he stays with us for another generation to experience his beauty. didnt realise so many people from here were going, we should have hooked up! wayne is the master for me at moment -
the build quality is solid! typical bomb proof modern american design! ala sadowsky and musicman! i personal dont get on with the lakland basses! the necks are too wide and slim, not ergonomic for me. i also found the tone to be a little dull, probably the barts they use!!! if it suits you then your onto a winner, but its just a matter of taste. there is no right or wrong. many people swear by the skylines. good luck

how come no one on here has mentioned the mighty anthony jackson!!! the love of money???? anyone??? flight over rio?????? mr jackson is my favorite pick player, he is not bound by technical ideas or faults! really strong musicality!
-
i think the point i'm trying to make is: play something familar to the listener but make it your own! use it as a tool to express your own playing! every bass player will play teen town slightly different!!!! some make it work some dont!!

school days is a good piece! its got rock/jazz harmony roots. slap, harmonics, bends and chords, all pose a big challenge and if mastered look and sound good! you can just stick the blues minor/major ideas and its not going to sound pants! dont do a piece which is centre around one techique or idea! if you can mix it up then people will understand your a good alround player! if school days is too much, try anything by stevie wonder. do i do is a great bassline, so is masterblaster. give me a shout and i can send you the lead sheets if you need them!

i've played one of these basses and it freeked me out!!! the neck has wenge laminets, just like warwick the neck dimensions is huge, just like warwick its got narrow string spacing on the 5 string, just like warwick the active eq is huge, just like spector, blow away by the mid range freq pot! its massive! it was reallly really nice, if your into that sort of thing! i was/am and i'm slowly moving away from it all. it was released 5 years ago i would have snapped it up! i just dont need a bass like this. i would buy one tomorrow if i was told i needed to go gig with damien marley! the booty is big!!!

go for the distinction!! SCHOOL DAYS!!! by master clarke! Do it

seen these guys before! love the playing, its all very tasteful!! the bassist is really hooked up on his own thing! not sure if i enjoyed the slapping? his playing does inspire me to go order a fodera!!! the tone beautiful!!! One day when i have to retire my warwick! (6-10 years maybe)
