how many of the players out there who dont use a metronome have played a gig where there is no kit drummer, and your are the time keeper? Relying on others is a lazy work ethic, why not be badass yourself? I guess theres not much chance of you guys playing a latin gig then? I do belive we all have an internal clock, our hearts! fast beats get us excited, slow beats calm us. its your heart doing this reaction, and learning to pace this is a skill. the question i want to throw down is do you count time when playing with others. tap your foot? say 1-e-and-a, 2-e-and-a etc to yourself? I used to, but i dont and its vastly improved my timing. Ron Carter has the same approach, "the timing is in the hands". i feel another can of worms opening!
I don't use them, never have, never will.
out of interest, why?

this topic is all kinda mixed up! the real key to using a metronome is to link it with your internal one. playing subdivisions over a metronome is a key way to linking in with your own time, but it needs hard work and variety! how many people have played teen town over 40bpm? playing fast over slow tempos will help you gain a sense of where your own clock feels time. maybe try having a metronome play just the one of a groove, then play exodus! its not easy. the really strong players dont need a metronome because they feel the time already, they dont need any other player to sense it. just look at wooten or the mondesir brothers!!! i think what berlin is saying is right to a degree, that if you dont explore time and just sit down with a metronome your going to get no where. using a metronome "creatively" is the key. no music is set at even pulse with little variation! and yes Bruford is the DUDE! ps i dont think jeff is wrong because of his point, its just whats working for him!

Damn, can't find that sound - Rob Trujillo's solo
Johnzy replied to Faithless's topic in General Discussion
I know that Robbie is sponsered by Hiwatt, as uses a seperate guitar for the high end distortion. I've tried this before, using a friends marshall rig and the line out from my amp, and it really pumps! it creates a tone thats is really snarly, and flexable because of the 2 preamps! Robbie's tone in this solo sounds like there is a bassballs filter running in fx loop. I think he uses 3 channels on stage, which wouldnt surprize me! when you've got 5 mins, try out the bi-amping. i found the average guitar amp sounds much better mixed in than any bass distortion fx box i've heard! -
I've played these basses a few times, and i kinda like them. they are in no way subtle, and you need serious attitude to gig these basses. wasnt too impressed with them, tone and spec can be matched by epiphone along with similar prices. the only bass i considered buying was the z model, which has a really convincing upright tone. was considering buyin one, defretting it and putting some tape/gut strings on. it really was cool, even in lime green!

I've got the neck sanded on my musicman, and it certainly changes the feel of an instrument. the lack of finish has vastly changed the stability of the neck and it seems to move everytime the window opens or heating is left off!!! i have to reset everything about 3/4 times a year to have it playing well. this is a major pain for touring/travelling and i never use it as my main instrument. the original finish was nasty and i hated the feel after 5 minutes sweat. the neck had to be cleaned after every gig to make it smooth again. my warwick has never needed to be adjusted except after initial setup, and never moves. i've also never wiped it down, i've just layer it with more of the warwick wax. this has created an unbelievely smooth gloss which doesnt react to sweaty hands. the sanded necks also adsorb all of the filth from your hands and quickly dark up maple necks. i'll post picture if you want examples, but my stingrays neck is turning creamy coffee colour. i'm sure it will come out with alot of hard work. looks kinda vintage! i've thought about cleaning off the stingray neck and resanding it and sealing it with a few layers of the warwick wax, i dont know if this will cure the extreme warping! good luck whatever you decide to do!

I probably play bass because of my mother's love of paul simon and his '80 albums. You can call me al was the first song I remember hearing and working out what the bass was! the first song i learnt was Smells like teen spirit! followed by most Nirvana's stuff. Then I went onto Chilis. then Jamiroquai. Since then I have found Jazz and an ego out interest what are you guys listerning to and learning now? and does it relate back to your childhood/beginner experiences? Have you come full circle or are you so far gone you cant remember why you used to get soooo excited over a certain line!!!!

sheehan did alot for rock bass, he kinda redefined what was "expected" from rock bassists. he can REALLY lay it down and stick to root note chugging, but has also got the ability to tear someones face off with a nasty shred!!! RESPECT the sheehan!

my man is Douglas Rauch! the man who invented the double thumbing!! although the "second" Santana band had 3 percussionists, two keys and two guitars, rauch layered some of the sickest lines ever!!! Caravanserai is THE album for bad ass grooves. his playing with Billy Cobham is amazing, he tears thru a monsters’ 29/16 time signature with no problem on the life and times album. shame the man died so young. in the pop context, Anthony Jackson on the naughty album by Chaka khan is a bad boy. in metal i think I get rex browns point of keeping to the groove full stop! gotta love far beyond driven! its almost pop metal!!!

As a few of you guys know i'm moving into my misses house as of next month and i need to get rid of all the stuff i just dont use anymore! I'm getting rid of all the stuff i have upgraded or simply changed minds about. first up is my lovely sony minidisk player. used this for about 3 years on the road, real life save at times. I upgraded to an Ipod at xmas, but have failed to let go of such a useful piece of kit. unlike the ipod this thing also records!!!! just insert a line in and hit record and you can track whatever you like. fantastic to use on a board mix at gigs or practice. essensial when jamming to capture ideas. comes with al original equipment including proof of purcase! I'm open to offers, so start PM'ing me now! dont miss out! next up is my old acoustic guitar! interesting for a acoustic as it has a maple fretboard, which delivers a deep low end and brittle high end. this is a very clean sounding guitar, which is in fairly good condition. the white marking on the body of the guitar is nothing more than sticker resedew, this can easily be removed by next owner. £60 would make a nice present for christmas, or something for one of you guys to mess about with on a sunday afternoon! another item i used alot on the road to keep myself entertained was my portable DVD player. its small (not much larger than a dvd case) with a lcd screen. great for the back of van on a long journey home. it has also been used with a projector for band visuals and video live onstage. it has charger, av and scart leads and instruction manual. good conditon and open to offers around £60. its all gotta go so get gas'in!

cool! maybe i've just heard too many stories!!!! you guys are right, but the pop world is just so jaded. janek gwizdala told me when we met that he has missed pop/soul sessions because he doesnt use a ken smith. most of his pop work is done a p bass, but some producers have set ways and ideas. i dont ever want to be left out of a situation because of my gear.
Isn't it better to give people false expectations and then prove them completely wrong in a good way? I mean, they're not gonna leave the gig just coz they don't like the look of your bass! I did my last couple of gigs with my 6-string and maybe people thought I was trying to be John Myung and then they saw me play and perhaps I changed their minds
to me the first impression counts. music is so open now, but people still make their mind up in a second. changing it can be hard! playing music is only 10% of the music business. someone sees your picture on t'internet, what they gonna think? people hear 30 seconds of my groove what they gonna think? i hate this way of think but its just how it goes for majority, there are special people out there though!
-
you know what its like when you turn up to a gig and see a guitarist with a big flashy ibanez ala vai. or when someone is wealding a 6 string bass? or double kick drum set? there are preset expectations! i dont want to judged! thats all. i dont think you get the point about the ibanez, its active!! passive humbuckers can be really good, but the cheap ones are often coupled with a active circuit to make them sound better. basswood isnt my thing either.
-
anyone thought about the samsamp? theres now a programable version!!
-
I've thought about the ibanez bass, but was put off by the basswood body! plus its active, with humbuckers!! i want jazz pickups and passive controls, ala jaco! the squier is nice, but i just cant get round the idea of signature instruments. i dont want to buy a cheap copy of the jaco custom shop! when i turn up to gigs i dont want people thinking i wanna be jaco or even a budget version of him. i'm really opinionated on gear, but i'm loving the ideas you are throwing my way. keep them coming. think its still gonna be the cij fender, as nothing i can find matches the specs for the price! plus it will be martins defretting work, so it would be worth much more!!!
-
hopefully i will have enough monies saved up by christmas to buy myself a little treat. I need a fretless bass badly, i owned a sandberg 6 string which is one of the best out there but had to sell it to fund myself in college! kept my head down and i've got about £400 to spend on a fretless. i really wanna an all passive jazz bass pref 5 strings. i've been thinking about getting a cij and getting martin at the gallery to defret it for me. but it all seems like alot of trouble for just a simple bass! any recomendations from you guys???
-
i would say just for practice there is nothing really better than the mini peavey combos, IMHO. I never touch the eq, if anything i try to make my bass sound as nasty as possible because i want to hear all the noise and fluff from my playing. and remember practice is for practice, working on new stuff etc. if you can get your hands to "sound" how you like them without eq then your 2 steps closer to your tone heaven.
-
i try never to play the same thing, truth be told i use to always warm up with a few licks, but i'm trying to drag my music away from repetition!! today i just play how i feel, ie slam my hand on the fretboard to find a random key and work around it with current harmony ideas and moods!!! today was a manic slap pattern in c minor!!
Guys - I was going to just get as many people as possible to meet up for a few pints in Bristol when I get down there (will be there permanently from 30th November and most weekends from Friday onwards). Don't worry about getting all gear and so on sorted until a basschat bash is due; best off just meeting up for a brew and talking about the gear we'll all bring to the next bash
i'm in
Yeah - sorry about that. A proper South West bass bash would be great if 'someone' can find a bass friendly venue and we have enough confirmed attendees to pay for the bugger. Any ideas?
i think it would be a good idea. maybe find somewhere with an open mic night, so if peeps wanna jam they can!
