1. I played my first Precision in anger about 5 years ago. It was a mucked about with Squier with a Badass II and a SD Quarter Pounder. I don't even remember what it sounded like, apart from "like a bass". Five years later, it's a Cabronita Precision. I just can't get down with a vanilla Precision
2.
It's not essential but the more your fretless bass is like your fretted bass then the better your muscle memory will serve you when you change over.
Agreed, I got a BB350F with that exact reasoning in mind (I had a BB300 at the time, had a BB614 before that and currently have a BB450)
3.
I did have to change the pots on my old GL2000 tribute as although the pickups were US the rest of the electrics were crappy korean made. The now defunct east coast music where i bought it changed them to us mighty mite ones for me foc.
Really? What was wrong with the pots that were on it originally? Not trying to pick a fight - genuinely interested in the reasons why, as mine are fine so far, touch wood. The only pot I've ever had to change on a G&L was on a US made El Toro. Track was bust - worked from 100% bass to about 90% then zero bass. Of course it was the 1Meg reverse log. Go figure.
4. I'll say it - yes it's a myth.
5. That looks cool, thanks for sharing. I'm almost there - padding's done, neck support is nailed in place, just have to put some fabric over the padding then I'm done.
6.
I really like the look of these! Does it sound like a traditional precision?
I wouldn't know, I've never spent much time with one. Logically I'd have to say "I hope not" lest we all come to the conclusion that all this pickup swapping is a load of snake oil
7. What is this "planning" you speak of? I bought a bass at the weekend because a) I liked it, b) I was in a good mood and c) the sun was shining ;)
8. I had a Chaos Attack 4 a while back. Not a bad bass and probably one of the most "normal" looking Trabens, but in the end I didn't really gel with it that much.
9. No guitars in one of my bands (The Inevitable Teaspoons) - vocals, keys/mouthy, trombone, sax, bass, drums.
10.
Would it be making thigs too complicated...
Yes, it would.
11. On a practical building/finishing level, ash is open pored and needs grain filling, with alder you can generally get away without doing so. So you've got an extra hoop to jump through with the ash. As for all the tonewood debate, I'm not saying it's wrong - I'm saying that I don't care. If you could put a number on it, if it influences the tone of an electric bass more than 10% I would be very surprised. In my opinion pickups represent the vast majority of the sound produced, then string material/construction, then hardware, and finally everything else is filed under Misc and fights for the scraps.
12.
I found my US G&L L2K to be too confusing for me and moved it on. Personally, I thought it was trying to be everything at once- a little bit Precision, a little bit stingray, with a touch of Jazz. I'm told you can make it sound like any of them, but I just couldn't get it to sit in the mix like a precision. I tried to get a good thump from it, but everything just sounded too hot and aggressive when I tried and cut through too much. I perhaps should have persevered. I also couldn't get it to set up and play how I like, and found the micro-tilt system to be confusing. I'd probably pick one over a stingray, if that's what I was after, as they are definitely more versatile than them, if not as iconic. The US was a very high-spec and well built piece of kit, and mine had a relatively slim neck (did they not offer different neck profiles?) but in fairness I would probably go for the Tribute next time. I'm gassing for an M2000 now though. If I could find an orange/ blueburst with maple L2k tribute though I'd be seriously tempted.
To answer your question, yes they do offer different neck profiles on USA instruments: http://www.glguitars.com/instruments/USA/options/bass.asp The Tribute L-2000 has a "take it or leave it" half baseball bat neck, and the Tribute M-2000 has the "I've got no options for you either, but I think you'll like it" #12 neck (G&L Modern Medium "C", 1 5/8" at the nut, 12" radius)
13.
Surprised you haven't tried one, thought you were one for vintage gibsons or is this one on your list?
Nah, it's not on my list. Not my kind of thing. I'm sure it sounds and plays great but I'm just not taken by the look/shape of it.
Still wanting your RD & Victory BSB
There are a heap of Victories on eBay at the moment (2 Artists, 1 fretless Artist, 4 Standards) for you to drool over without coveting mine
14.
Actually surprised Nepheid hasn't been here yet BSB
Sorry, I've got nothing useful to add that can't be found at Fly Guitars. Never seen one in the flesh, let alone played one.
15.
Hi there from a Southerner (Aberdeen!!!). Welcome aboard the good ship Basschat. At this rate there might be enough people to get a local Bass Bash together
I'd be game for that. Welcome aboard, OP
16.
Looks very nice, like a P with a R*********r pup. How many slight variations of a theme can they make? Does it sound like a Precision?
I dunno. It does sound nice - it was this fact, coupled with the big fat chunky neck (and the lesser spotted Scottish summer) that made me think "ah, go on!" The pickup is more Gretsch-y than Ricky IMO - Fender's take on a TV Jones Thundertron, I presume.
17. Fender Cabronita Precision Bass:
18. If I had to choose, P all the way. Mostly because I dislike skinny necks.
19. Second hand Epiphone Jack Casady.
20. I have no practical help to offer as I'm in the triple privileged position of 1) being able to practice in my lunch hours at work, 2) having a separate and distinct outbuilding at home that I can make noise in and 3) not giving a monkeys what my next door neighbours think seeing as they think it's perfectly acceptable to leave their dog's faeces in the shared garden.
21. I haven't seen a DAW yet that hasn't had a learning curve like the north face of the Eiger and a user interface that's more complicated than a Boeing 747 - and I've been using computers since I was 8. I've gone "erm, what?" at every single one I've looked at, mostly because it's looked defiantly right back at me with giant, mesmerising yet frightening compound eyes.
22. Sounds like something you'll have to get custom made. This guy makes his own mudbuckers, maybe he could make a 5 string variant? http://curtisnovak.com/pickups/EB-0.shtml
23. These are great, I wouldn't be without mine.
24. That's quite endearing, in a "slightly melted P bass" kind of way
25. A few too many pints of Skull Splitter?
