1. Even if you don't read the chart, do yourself a favour and listen to the track!! Mainstream rock will never work for you again!!
2.
can i second the previous question. will it start sounding like a mess if i start subbing in chords on bass whilst the others are playing a standard progression?
Yes No Maybe - depends on the chord voicings, their note choices, your note choices etc. Recommend you try stuff out in the practice room. If their chord voicings are full of root notes you may clash but, if they are more 'open' voicings, your options are wide open. Learn to hear what's good and what's not.
3. Spider is a Canadian bass player who played with Tom Cochrane and Red Rider. He also played bass on Kim Mitchell's 'Itch' CD. THe guy is rock solid. This track grooves and sounds really fresh - I recommend you listen to it all of the way through as there are a few surprises! The horns are really special. The chart is dots only, no chords (couldn't be bothered), but its not hard to follow; loadsa pumping root notes. Enjoy. 4. That at least £150 below what I would expect to pay (already have one, thanks!!)
5. I go there two or thre times a month with work and have missed all this!! Must try harder.........
6. One Eden Metro combo.
7. STEP AWAY FROM THE BASS.........
8. I broke a string in about 1983 (on the last tune in the set) but, since then, I have taken one bass and never had a problem.
9. Major Minor Melodic Minor Harmonic Minor Diminished Augmented Major Pentatonic (relates to Major Scale) Minor Pentatonic (relates to Minor Scale) Blues Scale. Pretty much everything else comes out of those.
10. Howard Shore's Lord of the Rings Trilogy.... some superb stuff in there.
11. No. Just as you do not have to be able to read to act in a play. It would help if you could but, as long as you can learn the material/create original lines without the dots, noone will think any less of you for not being able to read. I would, however, recommend that you do because it is brill.....
12. A nice tango feel in there. I'd love to play Piazolla one day but there's not a lot of tango bands in Suffolk......
13. Nowadays its about an hour every two or three days. Sometimes more, sometimes less. Everybody thinks everything in the world is more important.
14. Don't know Aberdare. I hail from Cwmbran origianlly so that's nearly England....
15.
Tuition books are full of 'covers' isn't that how we start to learn?
Of course it is but we don't practice on stage, do we? We play music and have a choice as to what we play and most of us don't play Frankie and Johnny or Campdown Races Or shall I start a Bert Weedon 'Play In A Day' tribute band?
16. Where are you based in God's own country, j2112c?
17.
I am rehearsing with a Kool and the Gang tribute act this Sunday
I couldn't do it. I've pulled out (did I fall or was I pushed? Or did I engineer my own demise?) I hope one of you gets the gig and enjoys it. I didn't
18.
Mustango Sallyana? In that case, we're going to learn Summerio de seextyninos
I put that in for a joke. Good to see people are actually reading these lists!!
19. No - its a load of people trying to sell gear before the rest of us lose our jobbs and can't afford to buy it.
20.
Bilbo I've just youtubed some of those, you learn something everyday eh.
There is some great stuff coming out of Brazil. And some absolute sh** I play with a Brazillian guy who introduces this stuff to me all of the time. Gione Antony Band
21.
So you do play covers, Bilbo? I thought you didn't.
I wish. I deeply regret the fact that it is a lot tougher to do things with original material and that this industry relies so much on covers. I try to advocate for original music and focus my personal efforts on that area of work but, as with most musicians, it is an aspiration and inspiration not a reality. The reality is I primarily play covers, the same as everyone else although I am getting increasingly choosy and have a growing list of 'won't plays'.
22. Bass Desires is the best cd ever. If I didn't already have it on LP, cassette and as a download, I'd snap it up!!!
23.
Depending on how loud you need it, Gallien Krueger MB150 series have been a favourite of DB players for a few years. Great little things, and s/h ones often crop up on eaby etc.
Try before you buy. I don't think they are very good and that double bass players buy them because they are light not because they sound good. I think they lack any depth at all and do not deliver any real bass response so would avoid. I use my Eden Metro and it sounds great.

25. I think it depends on which aspect of the process you are focussing on. If you are at the note recognition stage, it may be of limited use as, at this stage, it is more important to get the note right than to readin it 'in time'. If you are at the reading rhythms stage, I would say it may or may not be useful depending on what level you are at and whether you are reading complex rhythms over several bars or just one bar of eighth notes. If you are at the stage where you are trying to bring it all together as a professional skill, I would say that a metronome has value in that it does place a discipline on you to 'keep going at all costs', as you would if you were on a gig.
