Upgrading a P-bass; but how much is it worth spending?
Grangur replied to Grangur's topic in Repairs and Technical
Ok, so the above pics have been over the past few days. Well, the primer went on ok. Then got sanded and re-primed, and sanded, and filled and sanded and primed and sanded. The last sanding was with 1200 grade paper. That stuff is just like slightly tacky paper. .... and you can also see here the bass body prepared an ready for spraying in the Grangur clinically pristine, purpose-built spray booth. Smooooothe as a baby's bum and ready for colour. -
what I've done is gone and gotten some decent JVC in ear headphones (£20) and I've been using the Vox Amplug thing. A gain, volume and tone control on the device and it plugs straight into the jack of your bass. It's also got an aux to play along or to work stuff out, which is why I use it mostly. I'd also say that it sounds even better than my amp! (Then again I haven't got the best 1 in the world)
+2

Well, for those who may be interested, I've moved forward on the project. I got the machine heads changed. The old head posts were straight up and down. The new ones are small capstans, which is cool. I've also bought a Hipshot bridge and Bartolini pups from Kdubb24 through the BC forum. Then I got to work on the body with the blow lamp. For anyone who's never done it, it's a strange feeling as you see the paint from a bass curl and burst into flames as you heat it and scrape it off. As you can see here it was Cherry red before it was ever black. After stripping I then got on with sanding. That was satisfying; rounding the edges more than before. Then on to the next stage... Primer -
.1uf capacitor with 250K tone pot anyone?
Grangur replied to iconic's topic in Repairs and Technical
Point taken, I got the decimal point in the wrong place. If it's 0.1 and 0.047, then you're right -
.1uf capacitor with 250K tone pot anyone?
Grangur replied to iconic's topic in Repairs and Technical
You're welcome I usually use 250 K Audio Log pots for both Tone & Volume with .01 for 'old school' or .047 for 'modern rock', occasionally use a 500 K tone pot with .047 to get the brighter end of P-bass territory. It doesn't matter at all if they're matched IMO. There is snake oil, there's many many tons of BullShit & there is also 'you get what you pay for' in terms of capacitor construction, quality & purpose - which doesn't necessarily convert to changes in tones that your average human ear can differentiate.
Have you tried fitting both 0.1 AND 0.47 caps with a change over switch? Maybe you could use a push-pull switch on a pot? Maybe the difference would be greater if the switch placed the .47 in parallel to the 0.1, so giving a total of .57? Would the human ear actually detect a difference? -
If Roland Rock's kind donation isn't right, you could also try WS Jenkins in London - www.wsjenkins.co.uk They supply wood varnish and fillers to the furniture french polisher market. Another possible source is http://www.morrells.co.uk/ Good luck. Let us all know how it goes.
Don't think i've ever clicked an ad on any forum, so for me they don't work. Personally i'd prefer a membership fee with only members being alowed access into certain areas of the site (general chat / marketplace). Sub forum sponsorship seems to work on other sites i use
+1

Not exactly a biography, but "The Music Lesson" by Victor Wooten It's a curious account of a period of learning in his life. -

Squier Precision MIC re-birth * FINISHED!*
Grangur replied to Jonnyboy Rotten's topic in Build Diaries
With me being new to bass (3 yrs) and my first build, it's interesting our start-point should be so similar. I don't want to gate-crash your thread. I may do one of my own. I must start taking some pics. I've already started one thread about mine but starting by asking a question: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/209618-upgrading-a-p-bass%3B-but-how-much-is-it-worth-spending/page__fromsearch__1 Good luck. I recon it's going to be interesting to watch each others progress and share ideas. -
Upgrading a P-bass; but how much is it worth spending?
Grangur replied to Grangur's topic in Repairs and Technical
As you can see from the pic here, there's not much space between the "D" machine head and the cut-out. These units' plates are only 36mm from top to bottom. Wilkos are 46mm high. -
Upgrading a P-bass; but how much is it worth spending?
Grangur replied to Grangur's topic in Repairs and Technical
Hi again All, So far I've bought a new Hip-shot bridge & Bartolini pups on BC. I've already fitted new strings and to sort the headstock rattle I've struggled to find machines heads. The only tuners I found that don't overhang the head-stock, other than Ultralites are these: http://www.giggear.co.uk/p/Guitar-Gear-P-Bass-Style-Machine-Head-Set-4-In-Line/ So I got these in chrome. Next step is to sort the ding on the front... re-spray coming up! I'm thinking of white with a blue pick-guard.. hey here's one. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/230995279776?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649 Shame about the Fender attached, but what the hell. There's the next project! (this is becoming a habbit) -

Grangur replied to Jonnyboy Rotten's topic in Build Diaries
....Never having undertaken a project like this before I was a little disappointed when I found that any decent replacement tuning pegs would not be the right diameter so the peg holes in the headstock will likely need to be widened..... So I have ordered black Wilkinson Machine Heads, black 3 ply scratchplate and a black bridge. Will keep you updated. Let me know if you have any advice or thoughts! Cheers, Jonny.
Hey Jonny, You're doing well. I've got an almost identical project on the go with a Squier P Bass, but I paid a bit more for the bass. (Dammit all!) Mine has the same prob with the headstock and getting tuners that don't hang over the side is near-on impossible with the dinky Squier heads. Sorry to say this but the Wilkos will over-hang top to bottom and may be too long on the width. Ones I got, that are actually slightly smaller, and mine are chrome, but you could look at these: http://www.giggear.c...-Set-4-In-Line/ (Call them I believe they do them in black) I hope this helps -
because £750 will buy you another 14yr old SAAB. The fact that yours has new tyres, exhaust and pink furry dice doesn't come into it. It's illegal to profit from insurance.
-
And what will they have to pay out when your brakes fail and you drive into a 5 series BMW, or hit a mother on a crossing? Let me assure you, paying you your £750 will be the last of their worries. I'm out of here. Thanks for the chat
-
True, but you may be claiming the full value long before they've had that from you in premiums. If you weren't hoping to profit out of it by making a claim for a bigger cost than the actual loss, why would you want to pay a bigger premium than you need to? Don't forget insurance fraud is NOT victimless. It costs jobs when the company goes down and that would happen if fraud becomes rife. When you by a bass on BC, there's nothing to stop you getting a receipt from the seller. Then you would have paperwork to back up the proof of ownership.

Don't forget the risk insurers have of being de-frauded. You could tell them you have a Wal. You don't own one, but you've got a pic of you holding one. You agree a value of £2K. You take out a policy with £2k as an agreed value and pay your £15 a month (theoretical sum, i don't know the price). 3 months later you call the insurance company and claim for a theft of the Wal that never existed. And you take their £2k and buy a nice Wal, or whatever. This is why they want paperwork and evidence. House/car insurance is different at least there's loads of paperwork to verify the car/house existed and you DID own it.
-
Following on from the damaged WAL thread......
Grangur replied to Phil Adams's topic in General Discussion
I guess having a bass is the same as anything else; if you can't afford to lose it, insure it. If you can't afford to insure it, then you can't afford to own it. I got a quote for £1200 of gear, covered for about £3 a month. It's not big bucks.
