I gather that Rick Buckler has the hump with Bruce and has left FTJ because Bruce agreed to play on the new Weller album, however. Shame... http://www.independent.co.uk/news/people/p...re-1792294.html
I knew Rick Buckler had left but I didn't know it was because of that!...amazing that BF & PW are talking again...now for that Jam reunion!...man can you imagine how well that would sell....like The Police comeback gigs I been having a stab at this...I had to slow it down it bit though The Jam - The Night
 2.
Suggest a few of the more obscure gems?
1. Girl On The Phone 2. Thick As Thieves 3. The Dreams Of Children 4. Monday 5. Man In The Cornershop ...the list just goes on and on. I seriously think if you went through the whole of this box set and tried to learn all of Bruce's bass lines, you's be one hell of a player by the end of it.
 3. I was obviously aware of The Jam's greatest hits but I've just got hold of 'Direction Reaction Creation' which is the box set of eveything they ever did and I am gobsmacked that pretty much everytrack has a killer bass line in it. I was struggling for new stuff to learn...now I've got 117 tracks to wade through! I knew he was a true bass hero, but even more now!
 4.
Do you mean this one? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yO_EgW1zxWQ
Being a big big Smiths fan..I have to concede, it's does sound a lot like this doesn't it
 5. I've never seen this guy before......he's good. I hate people that make it look this easy
 6. I love The Beat...I've had the chance to see them a couple of times but not bothered as i know Dave Wakeling in the US and not with the band anymore so it's not The Beat as far as I'm concerned. Mirror In The Bathroom is a close contender for my favourite song of all time...I never ever get sick of it
 7. Saw the legend that is Nick Beggs on Thursday playing with Kajagoogoo in Southampton. I stood in awe most of the evening. At the end he tugged at his shirt to acknowledge he had seem me wearing my Musicman Stingray t-shirt......he'd been playing a Stingray all evening. He did break out the Chapman stick but to be honest, I couldn't actually hear it!
 8.
I always like the 'Big Bubbles No Troubles' thing with Ellis Beggs and Howard, cyclic and well groovy
blimey! somebody else has heard of ebh!
 9.
Allthough I wouldn't consider myself simply red fan "Somethin' got me started-give it all up for you" really floats my boat when It comes to bass lines. drop D and "nice" slappy bits. oh yeah that reminds me (could be unpopular choice, no doubt.. "love and pride"- king I think the bass man was called Tony Waller(?), all his stuff...respec...) And dont get me started on Nick Beggs....ace on the Bass and also with ABC," look of love" bass lines that Nick Beggs "nails" when covering for those 80's tribute turns
nick beggs is a legend, seeing him Thursday with Kajagoogoo
 10. heard the interview...very interesting I heard he played sitting down in the PIL video becuase he learnt that way and couldn't play standing up!
 11. There are some really amazing basses on here....there's this one and somebody posted piccys of one owned by Phil Lynott a few weeks back
 12. Been listening to the Happy Mondays first album....some of Paul Ryders stuff is funky as hell.
 13. I started playing about 3 years ago. I started with Lessons but had to give them up and peronal cirumcstances meant I couldn't practice as much as I wanted to and get to join a band. It's turned into a hobby of mine. I wanted to learn an instrument but I didn't really get on with the six stringed guitar variety so gave bass playing one last shot. I was aware of people such as Mark King, Mick Karn, Sting, JJ Burnell & John Taylor (how can a guy be that good looking an play bass like that?) but I really enjoy discovering new bass players all the time. I took to instrument like a duck to water. I have too many other commitments to join a band which is a shame but when I hear a great bass line, I have a stab at trying to learn it. Three years down the line, I'm still pretty rubbish to be honest but I am a lot better than when I started and can actually make a half decent attempt at Andy Rourke bass lines, so I must be doing something right! I am never going to be Geddy Lee but being a rudimentary bass player gives me a decent insight into how good someone is, something I didn't know before I picked up a bass.
 14.
Don´t know if this has been posted before, but I figure it might be of interest to some of you: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WluQwSkm1Tk...re=channel_page Pino Palladino with Simon Phillips and Philippe Saisse. Can´t find any tour dates though...
Thought Pino had given up on the fretless after Paul Young's 'No Parlez' album. He didn't want to be known as the guy who just made the 'mwah' sound on all the tracks he played on...lol
 15.
Think that was me. It was from youtube I think...Bowie at the Beeb. It was a a brilliant gig recorded in 2000. It is available on CD if you look for it hard enough....the versions of Stay & Ashes to Ashes were brilliant. Do a search on youtube for Bowie + Beeb + 2000 and you'll probably find it
actually I found it Bowie At Beeb
 16.
Somebody a while back posted a link to David Bowie playing a small private gig at the BBC for some fans but I can't seem to find the link anywhere using search. There was some great bass playing on it, one song with Gail playing and then another song with a guy playing some amazing slap on a Musicman. Does anyone have this link?
Think that was me. 17.
Absolutley, and he even remembered to remove the battery, leave the sales receipt and original warranty card, and the original straplocks in the original case (Which he remembered to leave unlocked) He bought the bass in June 1979 and moved to South Africa in 1982,the bass went into the loft and I removed it in December 2006,so,24 years in a Loft!!!! No signs of wear though,or wood worm! ha ha ha Phil with the bass The 1981 Mockingbird The Gunslinger
Wow...what a bass...owned by rock royalty no less.
 18. As far as I am concerned Mick Karn is probably the whole reason I decided to pick up a bass guitar. I love the Japan stuff + Dali's car + Numan stuff find the solo albums a bit tough going mind. Thanks for the heads up about the autobiography...didn't know about that. It's true that he has no idea what the notes are on the fretboard. Check out his perfomance with Kate Bush at the '82 princes trust on youtube.
 19. Anyone ever done any?...are they any good?
 20.
I heard a couple of great stories being told by Nile on a program about Disco one night. First one was the Diana Ross record 'I'm Coming Out' - she was, at the time (maybe still is, I don't know) something of an icon within the lesbian community and they did this mainly as a joke to get her to burst on stage singing 'I'm Coming Out'. The mischievous little imps. Then one time during an interview Nile said Bernard was asked what strings he used to get his distinctive sound. He said something like 'I don't know, man - Nile, what strings were on the bass when I got it?' He always comes across as a really nice bloke - pretty humble about his success and talent which he generally lays at the feet of Bernard Edwards.
I heard the rest of the story about the strings on the bass. Apparently when Bernard died, his stingray was passed onto John Taylor from Duran Duran, including the original strings. During one Duran Duran recording session a guitar tech swapped all the strings on it and chucked them out as"they looked old"
 21.
Precision type bass, which I think is an old Ibanez, that I picked up in a junk shop for a tenner That was 10 years ago, and I still have it, and use it to this day.....In fact, today, I have just stripped it to bits, and refinished the body, as it had picked up a few dings and scratches Anyone paid less than that for a bass??
I remember reading on a fourm about a guy who found one of these at the dump! A Hagstrom Kent PB24-BG....technically that's less than £10
 22.
Two of my best instruments came out of Cash Converters: 1979 Ibanez Studio ST-105 for £140: and my Westone Thunder III Issue 2 Fretless for £180: G.
Loving the fretless...reminds me of an Aria Pro SB-1000, now I wouldn't mind finding one lf those for £130!
 23. Just spotted a beautiful Fender Prescision Bass at one of this cash converter type shops in Brighton. I fell in love with it but it didn't have a price on it. I was hoping they didn't really know what they had on their hands and would mark it up for £200 or something. Sadly when i asked it was £700! Got me thinking. Has anyone picked up something that was woefully under valued?
 24.
The Sister Sledge story goes something like - Nile & Bernard went to their record company and asked who was the act that was performing the worst. They figured that they could make Sister Sledge sucessful. The sugarhill gang incident was particularly funny - as everyone knows, the sugarhill gang ripped off 'good times' without getting permission to use it in their song 'rappers delight'. NIle & Bernard threatened legal action so a couple of the Gang's entourage came round with guns and advised them against it. They didn't know that Chic's lawyers were friendly with the Mafia and the end result was the same 2 guys coming back with a suitcase full of money
Did they threaten John Deacon as well when they heard 'another one bites the dust' ?
 25. And Bowie's 'Let's Dance' album and the early Madonna stuff and The Power Station and Sheila B Devotion. As you can tell I'm a bit of a 'Nard fan. Nile Rodgers & Bernard Edwards were the Lennon & McCartney of disco. Saw an intersting interview with Nile Rodgers where he said that the night Bernard Edwards died, Rodgers said he was physically thrown out of his bed while he was asleep. He thinks it was Bernard Edwards saying goodbye.
