1.
Oh back to that ol' thing again .. In what way are venues clogged with covers bands driving people away? If you were entertaining enough to fill your local venue on a weekend with your originals band the venues would book you over the same ol' covers bands any day. Covers sell tickets and beer, originals (on the whole) do not. There's no rules for covers. If you can play a good version and make it entertaining then give it a go. Hey Joe by Hendrix is a cover, Green Onions by Booker T is a cover, half of the lemon Song by Led Zep is a cover, The Who did Summertime Blues (The definitive version in my book), Tom Waits songs are covered all the time and, arguably, are more accessible once someone like Rod Stuart has chipped the fantastic melodies out of Tom's somewhat idiosyncratic versions, and Tom Waits does cover versions too .... I'm sure some of the contemporary beat combos play covers ... People do like familiar things (hence the huge rise of the tribute market) and, let's face it, how many people on here have ever written anything nearly as good as Johnnie B Good, Mustang Sally, Brown Eyed girl, Stairway to Heaven, Bohemian Rhapsody, Love will tear us apart, Teen Spirit etc etc etc.. not me, that's for sure.
I agree, the amount of bands I have seen that do originals are 99% of time, dull as dishwater. Listen to the legions of 'no tune' wonders on myspace working under the illusion they are the next big thing. I'm afraid i'd much rather listen to some one doing a balls out led zep or lizzy song then some dirge.
 2. Thought of another one....I love the original version of 'Next To You' by The Police and I was really surprised that The Offspring did a version at least as good.
 3. Reading the thread about songs that shouldn't be covered got me thinking tabout songs where the cover version has been better than the original. Anyone who has ever covered a Bob Dylan song for openers I do like the Foo Fighters covers on their singles, especially 'Have A Cigar' but I've tried very hard but can't get into Floyd
 4. Possibly not the best of all time but i'm having great fun learning 'Jenny Was A Friend Of Mine' by The Killers. I don't go a bundle on modern bands but it's nice to hear a nice bass line instead of a plod from a new band. It's interesting because as I was saying to my tutor, all the classic bass lines I've learnt from day one have been over 20 years old....be it AC/DC, ZZ Top, The Eagles, China Crisis, Buzzcocks...etc etc; there doesn't seem to be a huge amount of good basslines to learn from stuff today. There again there isn't an awful lot of good stuff coiming out full stop. I can appreciate there have been great stuff through every decade but since 2000, I don't think there is much worth listening too. Maybe it's an age thing and i'm not in touch with 'the kids' anymore
 5.
Music for chameleons by Alan Partridge, okay, Gary Numan (Pino Palladino) Pearl jam- alive Ozzy Osbourne- mama I'm coming home (Bob Daisley) Duran duran- lonely in your nightmare Simple Minds- sweat in bullet (Derek Forbes) Bauhaus- kick in the eye Talk talk- today Living colour - nothingness (Doug Wimbish)
i've got a fretless..there are some cracking fretless tracks their I might try....especially the Duranie one.
 6.
BIYF Where did I intimate that I cannot/do not accept that people don't have musical tastes? I have merely expressed my view re the band. Have I rejected the views of others as wrong? If so, I apologise.
not you mate but comments such as "You can think The Who were over rated, you might not think Who's Next is one of the greatest albums of all time, but then someone has to be wrong. " "and overated...hmmm" kind of imply that you dare not take 'The Who's' name in vain.....I can cherry pick Who tracks I think are good, as I can with The Stones, The Beatles, Led Zep. All band produce dross at sometime in their career.
 7. why can people not except that maybe some people have different music tastes?...I never said The Who were crap, I just said that most their stuff I don't like.....I wouldn't expect other people to like the stuff I like and no amount of me banging on about them all the time is going to change anyone's mind.
 8.
WHO'S BADGE BY? edit: sorry, caps lock was on.
Cream.
 9. A genre that never gets mentioned is the 'new romantic' movement. The two major players were Mick Karn & John Taylor but what about Curt Smith (Tears For Fears) Mik Sweeney (Classix Noveaux) Paul Webb (Talk Talk) Chriss Cross (Ultravox) Gary Tibbs (Roxy Music/Adam & The Ants) Gazza Johnson (China Crisis) Barry Adamson (Visage) Matin Kemp (Spandau Ballet / DFS furniture) Michael Dempsey (The Cure/Associates) John Mulligan (Fashion)....piss poor but lovely bass OK so a lot of them were very average but nobody ever mentions them.
 10.
Did anyone catch the documentary on BBC4 tonight about Joe Zawinul? The bass player in his band - Linley Marthe http://yaplog.jp/linleymarthe/ - was scary good - playing a lovely battered old early 70's Jazz bass... Lots of great close-ups of his playing. Hopefully it will get repeated... Great video clip of him here: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=iz4FKN2x7gY
He's good but the music drove me up the wall after about 2 minutes
 11. I just heard 'Tommy The Cat' recently....totally amazing bass playing but weird as hell. I do love 'one better' by Les Claypool on his ownsome. Try this link Les Claypool Primus are a bit too leftfield for me but for me Les Claypool has to be up there at the top of tree
 12.
Got a link?
not to the one i bought but try this http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Drum-Loops-1800-wav-...tem320163362784
 13.
Anything by Demis Roussos.
TBF I don't think Demis Roussos should have attempted them in the first place
 14. (puts tin hat on) I personally think the Who were overated....don't get me wrong...I love the singles...."Won't get fooled again", "Who are you?" , "My Generation", "I can see for miles" are all amazing tracks. It's just that beyond the singles I can't find much to float my boat i'm afraid. Still they were still better than The Beatles (ducks for cover)
 15.
You should check out the versions by Nouvelle Vague and Susanna and the Magical Orchestra
In a good way or a bad way
 16. I just ordered a cd from The Bay which has four hundred loops from a 'Session Drummer' for under £10 so that will do for me Tommy.
 17.
does Cubase LE (the bundled version) support the files?
Not sure, they import quite nicely into Acid Pro though.
 18. Dave Allen from Gang Of Four, equally as good as Bruce Foxton IMHO.

Now I just need a band to go with it
20. 21. I've always been flabbergasted by Norman Watt Roy on "Hit Me With Your Rythmn Stick" Having seen the guys on youtube playing it, I can safely say that if I played till I was 100 years old I still couldn't play it!
 22. Ladies & Gents I think I am just about to make myself very popular! http://www.drumslive.com/freeloops.htm
 23. In order to perfect my timing I practice with a metronome. However this is a but dull so I've downloaded a few drumloops from the net and practice keeping in time with those but they are ususally drum machines. Does anybody know a resource of live drum loops or anything to practice along with.
 24.
You might also like to think about doing the Weekend Warriors course too. It's a scheme designed to get people who are 30/40+ into, or back into, gigging. You pay about £90 and they put you in a band with like minded/age people, lend you amps etc, organise rehearsals, offer advice and then stage a gig at the end of about 4 or 5 weeks of practice. I've seen a scheme in action and it looked really good. All the details are here.
Hey that looks good. I am still looking at the route of finding other amatuers via the website option. Im guessing for bass players, priority no,1 should be a drummer to work on timing etc. If nothing else this thread has awoken my interest in seeking out other musicians to bounce of off.
 25.
Been thinking about this - its a good discussion and raises some interesting points about whether someone is a real musician if they dont gig. Just looked at the Oxford Dictionary and a musician is someone skilled at music, which is pretty vague. How do you know you are skilled (or even crap) if no-one hears you play? I'm am reminded of the old philosophy conundrum - if a tree falls down in an empty forest, did it make any noise? Ok there is you-tube and the like now but thats not an indicator of whether you can play with other people - i've followed a few links posted on here and the chops on some of them sound pretty good - but some of them go to pot when you start counting the time. Its also not the same as playing in front of an angry mob in the roughest pub in town, and winning them over. My second gig with the Ferrets (one day after the first gig - two days after the audition) was in the long gone Whitehawk Inn at Brighton and my fellow basschatters from there will know exactly what I mean. I had been playing about six months and done one gig but loads of practices with my previous band. I had played guitar for 10 years so knew what the notes were, but trust me my spincter was pretty tight that night.
Oh man Whitehawk...reminds me of the Blues Brothers where they play behind a wire mesh!
