mine was that song by the 4 non blondes - i think it was called "what's up" a bit of Pop Trivia for you: The front woman from 4 non blondes is now the songwriter for Pink (I think her name is Linda something) - not the best bit of trivia, needs the blanks filled in lol
She also wrote 'what you waiting for' for Gwen Stefani

bass compliation CD...what tracks to include?
Do you want a CD where the bass works really well, or where the bass is very much the focus? I'd suggest some disco for music that thrives on bass but isn't necessarily note-packed. Good Times by Chic? Why not something simple and melodic like What's Goin On? Are you trying to teach someone about new artists? How about a bass-only band like DFA1979?
Yeah good Disco stuff is a must. As i've mentioned before....naff song, great bass line 'Boogie oogie oogie' by Taste Of Honey. -
for starters... NV43345 by Billy Sheehan (Talas era) Something off Stu Hamm's first album - maybe 'flow my tears' (but NOT that country thing!!) something by Victor Wooten (and maybe something by Jaco although I have to confess to not being his greatest fan!) and to show something completely different and how a simple essentially one note bass line can make a song I would also add '20th Century' by Brad from the album Shame. Video Here (in fact - just listening to it now for the first time in ages....what a damn fine song it really is!!) I'm sure I'll think of more! peace c
'20th Century' by Brad, what a great call...i've never seen anyone mention that track before....a spin off band from Stone Gossard from Pearl Jam I believe. -
Loved the bass for years until decided to learn it about a year ago. Never regretted it for one minute and I can feel myself improving and I'm light years away from my first attempts 12 months ago. One bass line that always made me want to play 'air' bass was 'Same Old Scene' by Roxy Music or 'Peaches' by The Stranglers or Anything by Japan.

If you were putting a CD together to show off bass playing......what would you include?
Jack Bruce played an SB1000 for a while.
When the lottery numbers come up...that's top of the shopping list!

Just found out my new boss of 3 months is a bass player!...we are everywhere He has a Washburn t-24...very nice. I mentioned John Taylor and he knew he played a Aria Pro II...thought I was the only saddo in my office who knew stuff like that.......lots of bass geekness followed and promises to do CD's for each other of bass orientated tracks.....lol.......finally someone who I can speak to who as geeky as me about basses!
-
Hmm someone who can't play obviously. I feel the lady doth protest too much.

What 1 question to any bass player would you ask?
I'd ask Mark King a question... "What on earth made you think you could make that last Level 42 album in your home studio, it sounded awful and compressed to buggery" ?
I don't think L42 have made a decent album since 1989!....some say they never have -
Chatted to Gary Numan once (very short) and stood behind the mighty John Peel on the escaltors in Virgin Megastore in Oxford St. Was at a lock in at a pub in Andover when the guitarist from The Troggs celebrated his 50th birthday. Of course 'Wild Thing' got played over the pub speakers and my mate in a loud voice shouted "I love The Stones"
Take That Situation and Whistle Down the Wind - Nick Heyward (Pino I think) Get here - Oleta Adams (Pino yet again) Go West stuff (bloody Pino - yet again I'm sure) Did someone mention New York Minute by Don Henley? The Bad Company stuff is great. Shows you don't needs loads of chorus / delay and be slipping and sliding everywhere - but when you do... Percy Jones - Brand X Livestock - "ish" I keep a fretted and fretless to hand always. Fretless is such a unique voice. OK it was more "fashionable" in the 80's but its still valid now in the right context. My main squeeze is a Pedulla Pentabuzz.
Pino is certainly not short of work is he?...I'd forgtotten that Oleta Adams song...ranks right up there in my most hated records list. I can't recommend Karn's playing with Japan high enough. His first album 'Titles' is good as is his stuff with Pete Murphy in 'Dali's Car'......his solo albums afterwards are tough going mind.

"Jaco, why is it that the second you pick up a bass guitar, people try and force you to listen to you?" I DON'T GET JAZZ ALRIGHT! -
When I played in a Beautiful South tribute band, one club owner asked me if we played any rock tunes as well. Like what I asked, well Led Zep, Purple said the goon. No, we are a Beautiful South tribute band, well, you must play other stuff as well replied the goon. At that point I wanted to throttle him.
BEAUTIFUL SOUTH?...God man what were you thinking?...come the revolution they will be first against the wall. -
I'm surprised you think that - popular consensus (not that I'm necessarily endorsing that as bible) is that they really took off with OK Computer. Personally I'd say OK Computer and Kid A are my faves. Radiohead's problem is very different to Oasis' problem, in my opinion. Oasis wrote a staggeringly good debut, and have been trying to recapture it over and over with diminishing returns. Radiohead intentionally change direction with every new album - this means that some of their stuff might be to your taste and some might not. I can understand someone preferring The Bends to Amnesiac or Amnesiac to The Bends, but I can't imagine anyone ever saying they liked Be Here Now more than Definitely Maybe. Make sense? My favourite Muse is Origin of Symmetry. They're a band that changes over time, too, becoming more and more grandiose with every record. They've gone a bit too far for my tastes, but I wish them and their fans luck.
I think Radiohead were OK on the first three albums. When Kid A came out i just thought it was unlistenable which is a shame as 'The Bends' is an excellent album. I always preferred Blur to Oasis to be frank but I thought 'Heathen Chemistry' had some good moments. -
Pixies-I Can't Forget (Leonard Cohen) Sisters of Mercy-Jolene (Tin helmet on) I prefer No Doubt's version of It's my Life (incoming!) Stranglers-Walk on by Husker Du-8 miles high UK Subs-She's Not there George Thorogood-One bourbon, one scotch, one beer (John Lee Hooker) {/quote] 'Walk On By' by The Stranglers is just brilliant. JJ is aother big reason for choosing a bass over a guitar, the guy is still as cool as f**k.

It's annoying that you pay in dollars in the States what you pay in pounds here. It would open up a whole range of basses I couldn't afford when I was originally looking.

Tried to learn my first Slap Tune last night.
Few quickees I find helpfull when I'm teaching slap: - New strings, brighter and beter response (or try boling some old ones) - With your EQ the classic is to scoop the middle, the smilry face on the Garphic EQ - It should be a very fast motion, with thumb in contact with the string for the minimum amount of time. You want to either bounce or go straight through the string, don't leave your thumb there once you've struck the string as that will effectivley mut the note - Contact point - you want to try and have your thumb striking the string right over the bottom fret (not over the pickup) and bouncing the string off of that fret Hope these help. PS a really good slap song for beginners is Fly Away by Lenny Kravitz - PM me if you want and I'll knock up some TAB
stunning, thanks for that i'll try that later on -
I am trying to learn 'Brickhouse' by The Commodores. I had no idea they did such funky stuff! I am finding slapping very diificult. I just seem to get a dull thud. Anyone give me any tips?...amp settings or anything that might help?
Joyrider's cover of the Jane Wiedlin hit Rush Hour One-hit wonder forgotten by everyone but me - still crackin' though. Oh and also Ron Sexsmith's "I don't like Mondays"
I remember Joyrider, I think they were from Northern Ireland. I've got that track on an indie comp. from 1996.
Just the Way You Are, Barry White version. Miles and miles better than Billy Joel's original. Also, Cassandra Wilson's version of Shelter from the Storm by Dylan. In fact, I'll go so far as to say that Dylan's songs are almost always better when done by other people. Controversy? Perhaps.
I agree I love Roxy Music but I wasn't expecting much from the new album of Dylan covers from Bryan Ferry, mainly as Ferry's voice is shot and I can't stand Dylan. I have to say his spin on them was very good indeed (helped by Guy Pratt on bass of course)
