1. is this worth debating? Copeland = favourite drummer of all time Sting = one of the main reasons i play bass.
 2.
Just IMO, but... I've never really liked U2, I like Oasis, I love Radiohead, I'm not too keen on the Beatles but I love what they did, I like the Rolling Stones a lot, Elvis kind of bores me but I know he's great, Chuck Berry doesn't interest me, Pink Floyd = not my thing, The Police are great, Yes had one song I know and it's got a great guitar solo in it (Owner of a Lonely Heart I think it's called), Genesis = boring, Aerosmith have never appealed to me, Jimi Hendrix was great, Metallica = don't like most metal, Rush = indulgent nonsense but each to their own, David Bowie rules, R.E.M should worry less about the environment and more time writing better songs, I love the Velvet Underground, Iron Maiden all look like aging hairy handbags to me and try a bit too hard, Bon Jovi? I think Mum likes them, Jethro Tull? I think Dad likes them, The Who I saw live but I still don't totally get, The Beach Boys were superb, Prince, Michael Jackson AND Stevie Wonder are brilliant, Bob Marley was amazing, James Brown ditto, Steely Dan are one of my favourites, Queen I like, Abba had some great basslines, AC/DC did Back in Black didn't they? Or was that Van Halen?, The Allman Brothers I haven't heard much from, Earth Wind and Fire are OTT and completely brilliant, King Crimson I have never heard a song from them and don't have a massive desire too... And I absolutely despise the Beautiful South. Pick and choose your most the most controversial statement and go nuts.
I haven't once met anyone who likes the Beautiful South...in fact it envokes a violent reaction in me whenever I hear them. How did they sell so many records? On the whole Radiohead thing. the first three albums were good, The Bends is amazing then that Kid A thing came out where they forgot to write any songs. I have liked nothing they've done since. However there are some great videos on Youtube of them covering 'ceremony' by New Order and 'The Headmaster ritual' by The Smiths...both done exceptionally well. A covers album anyone?
 3.
Not sure who is more of a t*t. Bono or Morrisey. Morrisey keeps raving on about being a eco friendly vegatarian celibate ponse who dances around with flowers in his back pocket with an elvis quiff singing the same morbid depresive lyrics about someone either in a coma or about to be run over by a bus. Have to disagree on the sales point. The reason it was raised was because it was claimed U2 were over-rated. 144 million album sales really shows that a lot of people like them and so they can't really be classed as over-rated. Their last album alone sold 9 million. To put it in perspective, Stock Atkin and Waterman have sold 40 million worldwide. A drop in the ocean compared to U2 sales. The argument of sales versus quality however is very different but that was not being discussed.
No one slags off The Smiths on my watch! Totally unique. I do agree however that Morrissry's solo stuff is crap and is totally lucklustre with out Marr & Rourke.
 4.
Much as I hate Bonehead and all that he stands for I thought the roof gig was ok.(mainly because of the scenery) The new songs they played are absolute crap imho. Mind you if they did anymore songs I would have got bored. Speaking of people I dislike,Chris Evans was on the roof also. It's a shame someone didn't make a difference and push 'em off.
I hate Chris Evans with a passion...every since his sycophants stopped laughing as his every joke on hios radio shows, he sounds like some gold awful cheesy local radio DJ.
 5. I liked U2 and in fact the 'Unforgettable Fire' was the second album I ever bought. I am afraid their latest albums rely on one good lead single 'Beautiful Day' & 'Vertigo' and the rest of the album sucked more than a black hole. This time they couldn't even manage one decent single...'pu on your boots' is utter rubbish and if they think they are staying 'current', they ought to give it up.
>I don't like being told who and who I shouldn't like/respect deary me.i'm not telling you to do anything mate.. i was trying to point you in a direction that you might find interesting must admit i do find it amusing though that you have that sig and have never heard of the greatest bass player of the 70s.. the man who singlehandedly rescued bass guitar from the oblivion that hendrix had (albeit inadvertently ) placed it and made it cool again.. he put the bass back on the map again..and for you jazz farts.. bass is the lead instrument in the stranglers.. this was the first time this had happened in 'popular' music apart from a few who tracks. that is why he is so important.. oh and you mean cliff burton... jason newstead. who is he? :-/
The Punk spirit is still alive and kicking...hurrah!
 8.
Yeah, I wouldn't say single handedly either, all bass players over the years have coloured modern music in some way, even Sid Vicious. Bruce Foxton is another very influential player from the early punk era.
I read in an interview that JJ reckons no other punk bass player could touch him. If you count the Jam as punk, then Bruce Foxton could.
 9.
Bet you wouldn't say that to his face.
For me JJB was one of the coolest men to ever pick up a bass. He just made it look like an offensive weapon. Check out the freddy laker song he did on yout tube if you want to one of the best bass intros to a song ever.
 10.
Fine bass player burnel, but did anybody on here know he likes touching other mens bottoms?
Bet you wouldn't say that to his face.

 12. How can you play an Instrument and not know the history of it and some the big hitters who have inspired others . I don't like Motown but Christ was James Jamerson good. I don't like Iron Maiden but Steve Harris is amazing. I ain't fan of Reggae, but I know who Aston Barrett is.

 20. Not really a huge fan of the Stooges tbh but the influence they had on all that followed is undeniable

 23.
when Gail Ann Dorsey and Mark Plati swap bass & guitar roles in Bowie's band it's just to have a change- she can slap pretty well- see live versions of "the heart's filthy lesson". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6siuZChminw closeup at 1.20 and check out her singing Freddie's part & playing the bassline on "Under pressure" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aNGQor3dED8 - now that's a feat of coordination! I watched that Gwen Stefani live show on 4music the other day, and GAD got a lead singing spot at the end of one song (presumably while the star went offstage to change outfits)- when you've got a voice like that you'll never be short of work.
It's amazing he can still write cracking tracks Like The Heart's Filthy Lesson and I'm Afraid of Americans when most of his contemporaries ran out of ideas years ago
 24. The early Dollar songs were only hits because Trevor Horn weaved hs magic on them. I always assumed that being a bass player, Trevor Horn had played on them.
 25. Just hold of a copy of the live album from the Police reunion tour (2 weeks before it’s official release date…ahem) and it’s excellent. I was lucky enough to see them at the Millenium Stadium in Cardiff last year and thought they were fantastic. I noticed that Sting never got mentioned recently when the list of the best bass players of all time was being put together on here. For me he was another reason I wanted to learn bass above anything else. Forget the ropey lute albums and tantric sex rubbish, he is one hell of a bass player. If you get hold of a copy just listen to the live playing on ‘Voices inside my head / When the world is running down’…brilliant and vocals at the same time!...I have always loved the bass part on ‘When the world is running down’ and was one the first things I wanted to learn. Not to mention Copeland & Summers who of course are awesome in their own genres. I hope I look have as good as Andy Summers at 64!
