Boxing day gigs?

So we have been asked to play a gig on boxing day. We are a rock cover band and we are generally quite cheap compared to a lot of bands in the area. We get gigs because we are good value for money at £180-£200 mark. We are gigging virtually every weekend and I attribute that to the price, as we know bands who are as good as us with a lot fewer gigs due to the charges they ask for. That was just to stop people moaning about us undercutting bands and selling out nah, nah, nah. We got offered a gig at New Year in Perth and are considering it at £400 plus a flat for the band on Auld Years night. We all kinda agreed this was reasonable. On the other hand we were asked about Boxing day from a more local pub and our guitarist is adamant that it should be a normal priced gig?! I think its a special day and should be more. Maybe not as big a night as Christmas Eve or New Years Eve but still a special night. I mean C'mon it has its own name?! Do you guys charge more on boxing day or is it normal prices for you?
  2. We got booked to play in Perth at the Stagger Inn and I was looking for any Perth forumites to tell me what its like up there. A guy from work last night told me he had been warned all the rough red necks that are banned from everywhere else drink there and there was a bit of a reputation. We all went down last week to check the place out and it looked really quite nice but he said it might be different these days. Help me here, are we walking into a midden here?!
  3. +1 for Summer of 69. I hate playing it but it gets the crowd singing along every time without fail. Probably add Mustang Sally to the list. In itself its not cheesy but when someone comes up and asks us to play the commitments it kinda grates on me. Plus a very boring bass line. We do "I touch myself" as well though. Thats quite cheesy.
  4. We do the Ramones happy birthday from the Simpsons if ever asked for it. If anything it makes sure they dont ask for it again.
  5.
I would be very cautious in these kind of situations. The vintage and rare shop in Bath had an original Entwistle Jazz bass in stock for sale of course. It was from his collection and was considered to have been in since around mid 70's and was being offered at 34k or there abouts poss two years ago?? It was featured in a book called "Bass Culture - The John Entwistle Collection". so had some documentary historical evidence of sorts. Of course you could take a punt at a couple of hundred quid on the bass and who knows, you could be in possession of a more valuable instrument, who knows....??
The big give away is that he NEVER smashed anything up and also still had most if not all of his basses when he died. I cant see any reason to believe that this ever belonged to John.
  6.
Try listening to 2:30 and tell me you can't hear those cool bass fills. I actually rate this bass player. I haven't heard much of him but just from this song, I like his tone, his style and there's some cool little fills.
Couldnt agree more. I am not a fan either but respect where its due this Bassist knows how to fill that tune. I get a feeling that the OP is just looking for a reaction now. Skin Colour, Fieldy, now a legitimate bass player criticised. I'm waiting on the Jaco/Wooten sucks thread from him any day now.
  7.
ive always found its best to agree a fee beforehand. £30 between you is disgusting for a 2 1/2 hour gig
Yup. It may be a different thing if a few bands are splitting money or whatever but for a 2.5 hr gig you should have agreed up front. We dont play anywhere that either pays in ticket money or bar percentage. Its too much faffing about just to be shafted at the end of the night.
  8.
Jesus thats cheap! Nice looking too!
+ the 1! My 4 banger cost me just shy of that and I still think it was a good price. Great basses and you are right about the tonal variety. Someone is getting a bargain here.
  9. Very strange gig last night. Some local pub wanted to put on a sort of mini festival with three bands on throughout the day. The only reason we agreed was because it was understood that whoever the last band were we would all use there gear. Turns out noone wanted to share so we ended up having to bring our own. Not a problem, we explained that the only reason we had agreed to a reduced fee was because we were not bringing our own. Now that we were it was a slightly less reduced fee. We got there at 16:30 (supposed to start bringing our stuff in at 5. The first band were on a break and had started late. No surprises to me but the place was also quite empty. The organiser explained that someone had been murdered the previous week and another pub was having acharity do for him. I was now even more uneasy about this. We were then told they had some dancers coming on to entertain the punter/s while we set up. We actually set up so quick they didnt get a chance but we noticed they were all quite young though (read mostly jail bait with one or two possibly legal). So we played the first set and had a break then the dancers came on and did a bit of very inappropriate body popping with braces and hot pants on. I tried to just focus on the legal ones cause I fealt quite dodgy. When we went back on though they all started getting changed and stripped down in a corridor only the band could see! Its very strange trying to avoid looking at a bunch of very young girls in thongs and bras bending over stripping out of hot pants and lycra!!! I just turned round and watched our drummer instead and he just stared at his snare haha. Anyway the gig never did get any busier but we got our cash and ran for the hills to avoid being labelled as a perv or peodo. very strange and overall not very enjoyable gig. We will not be playing there again!

    obbm's feedback

Just bought a speaker and two instrument leads from Dave. The turnaround is second to none. I ordered late on Wed night and got the cables today. Cant speak highly enough about this guy.

  13. Bump for whats left. Will take offers.
  14. I found recently that I was only using 2 of my 4 pedals while gigging. Fannied about a bit at practice but never really felt the need live. Because of that I am selling all but my Tuner and have played 2 gigs without any of those 4. We had to drop Spread your Love by Black Rebel because that just plain wouldnt work without Fuzz but it never really got a reaction anyway. I find I can get most of the variations I need for a gig playing with my tone/preamp controls and a pick when needed. Horses for courses though.
  15.
Mr. Brightside always goes down well. We stopped playing Kaiser Chief songs cos we hate em and it seems they aren't that popular anymore. They tended to get more rolled eyes from the crowd than any other modern song
I have to vouch for Mr. Brightside unfortunately. It goes down so well that no matter how much I piss and moan about that (and any other Killers song) we cant drop it. I feckin hate the Killers and would stab Brandon Flowers in the voicebox given half a chance

  17. I decided that seeing as I only use 1 or 2 pedals rarely and on specific songs I would get rid of the lot (except my crappy tuner). Heres a Daphon compressor/sustainer £15 delivered [s]Boss NS-2[/s] [s]On offer but if that falls though £35 delivered SOLD[/s] Boss SD-1 As far as I can tell this is a Tube Screamer in a yellow box £30 delivered My Big Muff I dont really want to sell this but it isnt doing me much good. Better add this is the one with no PSU input. Just the Battery. £40 delivered. [s]Of course. If I am selling my pedals then I dont need the case[/s] [s]I can vouch for the solidity of this bad boy because it took a Wharfedale PA speaker from a tripod stand to it and survived. OK I had to repair the internal PCB for the connecters but it still works a treat. Due to the substantial crash test I'll take £40 but will need to work out shipping on this though. SOLD[/s] If you need more info or pics just PM me and I will do what I can.
  18.
Worth another mention just for being soooooo good!
Theres nothing about the hair, glasses or Camel toe that make this cool.
  19.
Theres also some other countries attached to the one pictured where you might like to play too
I was going to say... it looks familiar but someone seems to have cut off that Islands head!!!
  20.
Excellent news!! D.
Yup. Never underestimate the power of shoddy connectors!
  21.
Aye!! From 1 onwards..... D.
Well I managed to skive off enough from work tonight and check all the connections. I had emailed Ashdown and got the schematics from them, top guy (literally, his name was guy), He suggested a bad connector on the CPU PCB. Removed the top cover tonight and powered it up and played about with all the connectors on it. The power cable was the one that was cutting it out. Removed the plastic connector from the wires and soldered them straight onto the poles. Now I cant get it to cut out at all. Will give it a good going over at practice on Thursday and I am not getting my hopes up after the PC debacle of a few months back but alls looking good
  22. I seem to remember watching some blue peter twat or the art attack guy making some from a box of quality street. You know the green and red wrappers. Try it yourself!
