1. I've got a 15" combo? It's the first amp I ever bought so it's had plenty of use! The wheels are a bit worn and there are a couple of little scuffs, but overall it works fine and does the job! It's got an in-built tuner, a distortion/clean channel, octave effect, footswitch etc. Pretty handy to have around the house but I don't really gig since I've upgraded since. Crate BT220 + cash your way? I can send more specs/pics It'd be nice to visit Carlisle again
2. Cheers for all the advice guys! I think the main reason I'm a bit concerned is because (as far as I'm aware) Matamp have never made a hybrid amp, so I'm not sure exactly what it would sound like. However, I totally trust those guys to make something awesome, and it seems like the right thing to go for to get the warm/punchy/tube sound I'm after. Nevertheless I'll still be looking out for other stuff, but I think I'm after reading through this I'm now pretty convinced on the Matamp! Build diary to come soon I guess
3. Hey guys - so it's my 18th next week and I've been saving like crazy to buy a new amp. It's long overdue as the combo I've had since I started playing bass just can't keep up anymore and I'm constantly having to borrow gear from friends. So I'm looking for a smallish head/cab set-up (2x10 or 1x12 kind of thing) - the main issue being the head because the main venue I play at has a set of cabs and a 'bring your own head' kind of policy. Now my brother happens to be good friends with Haydn from Matamp, and they've offered to build me a custom hybrid amp with a valve pre-amp/digital power-amp. I'll hopefully be heading down to the factory next week to have a look and talk through specs etc. I know Matamp make some amazing guitar amps (my brother has one), so I'm sure it'd be ace. But I was chatting with a friend today and he pointed out that for the same amount of money I'm spending on the Matamp I could buy a small Aguilar or EBS rig, looking at some of the stuff on sale here. I've played through both the amps for sale here (EDIT: the same models, not exact same ones ) and I know they're well-built and sound ace. So the question is - do I risk spending out on getting a custom amp built or wimp out and buy something I know works great but might not be that super-awesome custom amp/best decision of my life? Thing is I've never heard a Matamp bass amp - although I'm told it'll sound amazing I'd like to know what 'amazing' sounds like before I dish out the largest amount of money I've ever accumulated! Anyways, any thoughts would be much appreciated! Cheers
4. For a beginner's bass, I'd just look for something that: Plays well Makes nice sounds Is well-built and reliable-looking My first bass was an Encore Precision copy. Built like a tank, nice neck, didn't sound too bad. Knock-off Fenders can be pretty decent; you can't really go wrong with a Precision/Jazz and they can easily upgraded in the future with new hardware. Check out Westfield/Encore/Sue Ryder and of course Squier
5. I definitely want to try out one of these! I've played a couple of '72/'73 tele basses before and they were great, having a bridge pick-up to blend in a bit more high-end clarity would be ace
6. Can stagelights blind you? Time to find out.
7. Roy Mitchell-Cardenas of Mutemath is pretty darn good. Holds it all together very well, and some fantastic lines. He recorded all the guitar parts on the new album too, so points for versatility
8. Less is more? Those transparent cabs are kinda cool though!
9.
It's alright son we'll knock them out anyway someone will be daft enough
See that's the funny thing - they've actually been discontinued. Apparently they weren't that popular. I guess five strings really aren't for everyone...
10.
The reason is that it has 5 strings
Nail on the head! I knew there was something was odd about it Edit: Just remembered I'm sat next to a 5-string Warwick. Darn it.
11. I've always liked the look of Warwicks. Apart from this one. Just... why? Is there even a reason?
12.
Really? Nobody's posted the Mothman yet? First in, for once....
Good luck finding a gigbag for that!
13. The MEC hardware in my German Warwick is ace. When I got it though, someone had somehow managed to break the push/pull volume and passive/active pot. £50 for a new one. £50! For a single potentiometer Luckily a friend happened to have one spare, and I'm forever grateful
14. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Peavey-T-40-Bass-1979-/280748991878?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item415df1a586 I really, REALLY want this. If you don't know about T-40s, look them up! Bargain
15. For what it's worth, I'm 17 and a fair share of the bands I listen to feature middle-aged/older folk, so keep going guys! Either way, play music for the music - if it gets you somewhere then it's a nice bonus.
16. Played through this the other day - great little amp this! Does the job nicely
17. The input's just started to play up, which is the first problem I've had with this amp (perfect timing!), so I've withdrawn it. (and removed pictures etc) My first ever bass amp! Loads of sentimental value - but trying not to amass too much unused gear/raising money for a new amp etc. It's a Crate BT220 in good condition - a few tiny marks here and there (the biggest of which I've tried to photograph). Not many people will have heard of it I guess, and the reviews that are out there a pretty mixed. Some people hail it as a fantastic amp for the money and some report some quality issues - but for what it's worth I've had this amp for a few years and it's worked fine from day one. I've found it really handy for smaller gigs in pubs/cafes etc. It's relatively small, the wheels and handles are solid and the in-built tuner is pretty good. Anyway, I've been saving up like mad for my birthday this November, which hopefully should be enough to order a custom head/cab from Matamp So I'm in no rush to sell, as it's still my only amp at the moment (although it never gets any use outside the bedroom as I normally DI with a pre-amp or borrow a head for the gigs I do), but I'm looking for around £125 for it? Or a trade/part exchange for a small cheapish head, a good-quality gigbag/hardcase and/or DI pre-amp (money adjusted either way - I can throw some cash in for a good trade). I believe they sold for £400/450 whilst they were being made, then down to £200ish for clearance when they were discontinued. All offers entertained either way! I've got access to a studio so I can get some sound samples if anyone's interested? So here it is: From left to right: -15db pad on/off Mute switch Channel 1 (clean): level (blend with channel 2), low, low mid, hi mid, high Channel 2 (dirty - footswitchable): gain, shape (tone), level (blend with channel 1) Switch to override channel 1/2 blend so that when footswitched only channels 1 or 2 are selected accordingly, not blended together. Channel 3 (octave - footswitchable): one knob - less or more octave Master CD input Headphone out On the back: External speaker out (speaker cable) DI out with ground lift, pre/post EQ and volume Effects loop send and return On the top: Built in chromatic tuner! Inside: 15" speaker 220 watts Extra features! Built in a similar fashion to a tank Heavy-duty side handles Wheels! Here are some pixels:
18. Got to agree with Dan (edit: and silddx, beat me to it!), it's definitely a buyer's market for Warwick's at the moment - get one while you can! There are a couple for sale on here at the moment I think... I've got a German $$ and it rocks
19. Definite I might have to drop you a PM! Either way, would there be any interest in a German Warwick $$ Corvette 5-string? Similar controls, except you can coil split both humbuckers individually into parallel, series and single-coil and it's got a passive mode/pre-amp bypass. Cheers! Ben
20. Charity gig a while ago! The awkward moment when our guitarist is re-tuning, tries to think of something to pass the time, and then remembers I happen to have a kazoo in my pocket. "And now Ben's going to perform a kazoo solo! Any requests?"
21. Darn it I'd been GAS-free for weeks!
22. I've got a German Corvette, but it's the double buck model. However the body/neck should be the same if not similar, and it's by far one of the most playable basses I've come across. I've never tried a standard Corvette but a friend used to have one and he got an ace sound out of it Either way, I'll bet the build quality with the Warwick is far superior to the Rick! Mine's built like a tank.
23.
I have a listing of real backing tracks without the bass on mp3 format, see the attached pic. If you want them pm me send me a cdrom and I'll burn them and send back
Thanks! I'll check those out with my teachers, the pieces have to be at a certain difficulty level but I'm not really sure what qualifies this year
24.
Does the place you're studying have a music tech course running? Students on that course might find that producing a backing track for you will work for their coursework assignments also, so you might find some willing volunteers that way. Network network network!
It does indeed run a music tech course! I'm studying it too! Unfortunately producing a backing track wouldn't help with any of my assignments though Coursework coursework coursework!
I have to say good luck for your A2 course! It would depend entirely on the school facilites, I guess. My school only had one room with mixer and we couldn't record during school hours as the actual rooms we record from are classrooms! However having done music tech as an a-level also, the coursework is immense. 120+ hours of coursework a year. not to mention that has to stretch across several students all trying to use the same facilities. I can't really be of much help as I just did a trombone with piano accompaniament for my performances. Would it be an idea to see if you can get a full band with you? - all you'd need is your part notated. The other in the bands don't have to be 100% correct. xD Its what I did for my AS - had a full swing band with me arranging something for everyone to play & have the original solo part to myself.
Cheers! We've got a studio that's actually pretty decent, but trying to find time for 28 students is fun yeah! A full band would be really cool! Sounds like you had fun! It's just the hassle of arranging it all, finding musicians and rehearsing whilst juggling three other A-levels - but I'll definitely look into it
25. Well if you know the bloke and he seems decent like you say, I wouldn't personally worry about it. I lend my gear (even basses) out all the time and nothing's ever gone wrong. For me, as long as there's no reason to distrust the bassist(s) and they ask nicely they're pretty much welcome to it - amps are made to be played right? There are of course always a few people with little respect for other people's stuff, but they stick out like a sore thumb, usually with a reputation preceding them. The vast majority of people are perfectly fine to deal with. You could always give the other bassist a ring and chat to him about it - explain the whole Trace situation and find out why he can't bring his rig etc? It's nice to be nice
