1. Even before getting a setup, why not just stick something heavy on the headstock with a generous amount of Blu-tac - if the dead spot goes away or moves, then it's a dead spot issue, whereas if it is exactly the same then it's something else, maybe a fret levelling issue. This way, you can see what you need to spend your money on first. Saying that, a pro setup is always a good idea now and then!
2. No chance to get pics up yet ... but here's a pic that shows it in action http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?act=attach...st&id=78927
3. Monday morning bump!
4. They should have known to tell you the keys beforehand! Still, how about 2 basses? One tuned to E flat, one to standard? That way you can change basses depending on what key the guitard feels like playing in, and play everything in the fret positions you're used to. Not ideal swapping basses all the time but hey ho. You could try and persuade them to put the songs in an order so you have to change bass once or maybe twice. If you don't have a spare bass you might be able to borrow one. Like from the guy playing the 2nd set!
5. SOLD! For sale, my Trace Elliot AH1000-12. I bought this from the bay about a year ago. It's in very good nick and I recently had it checked over by my technical man in the South West. Originally it would have been made in 2006-2007 or thereabouts. This is a real beast, quite big and heavy but with masses of power. There is one preamp (with switchable tube) and two 500W power amps. The back has 2 jack outputs and two dual jack/speakon outputs. So, as there are two power amps you can run up to two 4ohm cabs, four(!) 8 ohm cabs (4 Barefaced Compacts, anyone?!) or two 8 ohm plus one 4 ohm cab! This amp is LOUD. Used at a gig last night, I had the volume just below 3 (out of 10), that was plenty loud through a Barefaced Super 12T. Controls: gain, active/passive switch, preshape, tube switch, tube gain and blend, 12 band EQ with switch, rather good dual band compressor with separate high/low frequency controls and switch, loop switch, mute button and master volume. On the back there are various jacks and controls but my favourite is the control for the intensity of the lights on the front Also has a rather chunky and little used 6-button footswitch. With lights! There is one problem with it: one of the dual speakon/jack sockets is a bit fussy, it doesn't accept all speakon connectors (genuine ones seem to work fine, but my cheap copy doesn't). This socket takes a jack fine though and also the other jack/speakon is fine. Bought for £600, so will look to get back something close to that. This is a bit of a beast so collection from the south west or meet please. Interested in trades for amps, anything Markbass, TC Electronic, Genz Benz, Orange Terror Bass considered. Pics later! Here's some info straight from Trace Elliot themselves (PDF manual): http://www.trace-elliot.co.uk/pdf_display....A_1&key=400 Edit: pics now added!
6. 1. SGC Nanyo Bass Collection 4 of some kind. Sparkly silver finish. 2. Ibanez Roadstar fretless 4 from about 1980. 3. Fender MIJ Marcus Miller jazz bass. Heavily modded. 4. Ibanez Prestige SR4005E 5er. 5. Spector Euro5LX-EX. Owned for about a month; didn't get on with it. 6. Ibanez Prestige SR5000E. I still have 1, 4 & 6!
7. I've no Compact to trade, or any other cab, but I'll bet if you put a price up you'll definitely find lots of interested people. One of them might even be me!
8.
thanks I was only kidding! However to be fair I was sort of seriously enquiring whether a splitter out of a single speakon into 2 8 ohm cab was in any way different from a single speakon out to an 8 ohm cab daisy chained to another. I had concepts like series and parallel in mind. Based on balloons and maths (2x8ohm cabs= 4ohms) I am now supposed to know that however you connect 2 8 ohm cabs to an amp you get a 4 ohm load? So, crucially, I dont need to worry about finding a 2 output amp to power my single speakon BF cabs.
When you daisy chain cabs, even though it looks like they're connected in series they are actually connected in parallel
9. Or, according to the rules/laws/whatever of electronics, To work out the total resistance R of two parallel cabs of resistance R1 and R2, use the formula: 1/R = 1/R1 + 1/R2 This is the same as: R = 1/(1/R1 + 1/R2) So if we have two 8 ohm cabs, both R1 and R2 are 8. So: R = 1/(1/8 + 1/8) = 1/(1/4) = 4 ohms! This will work for other ohm values of cabs, e.g. 16, 8, 6, 4, etc. Also will work for 3 or more cabs, just add a +1/R3 in there. /geek mode off
10.
Nice little board! I'd gig with that. Stick an OC2 on it and it'd be about perfect. I'd recommend George L's to give you a little more space to play with....
Thanks! The syper synth acts as an octaver too, not a very good one apparently, but I've never really been into octaving much. And I agree with the patch cables - the plugs are huge and really get in the way. I've looked at George L ones but I need to save up a bit first I think. They aren't £2 ebay ones!
11. There hasn't been an actual pedal board posted for a few pages so I thought I'd share mine, now it's just been "finished" with a new SFX pedal and EBS compressor...
12.
Sounds interesting, Alistair. Looking forward to the pics... got any dimensions please? Also, how does 6 ohms work out with, say, an additional 8 ohm cabinet? What is 8+6 in ohms, and do you think a Markbass SA450 will complain? (The SA450 is 500W into 4 ohms / 250W into 8 ohms) Cheers, Stuee.
An 8 ohm cab and a 6 ohm cab together run off one amp (i.e. in parallel) would be 3.43 ohms. Probably not a good idea if your amp won't go below 4 ohms. On the other hand, a 6 ohm cab will probably get about 375W out of the amp which is still quite a lot!
13. Here are some pics! There are a few scratches on the side, I have tried to show these in the pics. Purely cosmetic though, the pedal works like a dream.
14. Gone! I am selling this because it's too big for my pedal board. Well actually it fits just fine but a new SFX pedal is coming and I need to make room! You know how good this is. Comes with power supply, and has velcro on the bottom. £105 posted, which is what I paid for it on Basschat a little while ago. I haven't used it much since then. Here is the original thread: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...;hl=compressore I would also trade for EBS MultiComp (true bypass model) or Maxon CP9 pro+. Pics up later. Thanks for looking!
15. Have a bump for a truly great wireless system. Also, where did you get the replacement cable? I would love to replace mine. Thanks.
16. I love Ibanez prestige basses. I have the SR 5000E which is truly fabulous. I notice that there are a couple of 5 strings for sale on here: This one's mine, the SR4005E: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=118050 For a bit more, you can get the SR5005E (not mine!) http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=142778
17. I went from a 24-fret Bass Collection to a 21 (?) fret Marcus Miller jazz. Yes, I did miss the extra frets but only for end of song type flairs and that sort of thing that I don't usually play as part of a song. I quickly got used to it but 24 frets always remained longingly in my memory. Back to 24 now and I'm happier! Slightly.
18.
It only weighs about 40 pounds :-) and it's got wheels and three handles :-)
It is daft light sure, and not that big really, and I put my Trace Elliot 500W into it and the volume control never, ever goes above 4/10
19.
I meant to add that with my setup last night being Polytune -> Overdrive -> Sansamp -> Suppressor i was getting some weird feedback when turning on my overdrive pedal. Didn't have much time to mess with it but will try the order you mentioned and see how that goes, appreciate the reply.
You could try: Polytune -> Suppressor -> Overdrive -> Sansamp That could eliminate the feedback issues, which might be the overdrive amplifying all the tiny little sounds. Could give you a nice clean edge to notes as well. Though this might not be to everyone's taste!
20.
Right, after trying The midget and OTB with my bass at KK Jale's gaff.. I think, I'm gonna put an order in for the midget and sell my MB 1x15.. Then I have two nice cab.. If I like the BF as much as I think I do, I might by the compact 2nd later.. and sell the sp210.. but not if I'll give up the sp210
Using the SP210 and midget together, the SP210 is a quiet cab (I used to have one) due to the isobaric design, whereas the Barefaced ones have high sensitivity so will probably be a lot louder than the SP210 if you run them in parallel. The Barefaced might overpower the SP210 so much it might not be worth using the SP210 at all. I love my barefaced though.... S12T owner
21.
I get to use this setup this Friday at rehearsal so will get a chance to hear it at volume with the guys. Looking forward to it. I'm surprised they haven't taken this 1 knob spectracomp and put it in a pedal, keeping the LEDs.
The compression is probably very dependent on getting the right level in the signal chain first using the amp gain, so not really suitable for a pedal unless you put in other controls like gain, or threshold adjustment. Still, a 2 knob compressor would be good (my Markbass one has 5!)
22. Quick update.... Replaced all the fuses - but no joy, sadly something more fundamental I thought. Took it in to my repair man, who took ages actually finding the problem, and it turned out that it was just a dodgy Speakon output connector! Will be getting this replaced, though it's a custom Trace part that was presumably designed by Gibson, Peavey now own TE apparently, so getting one involves a bit of a dance but my man has managed it!
23. To the OP: If you want a smaller rig for practise, and a larger rig for gig, I would personally get two 8 ohm cabs, and use one of them for practise, and both for the gig. So, for example, two 8 ohm 15" cabs would do it. Or a 15" plus 2x10", use the 2x10 for practise. Or a 2x12 plus 1x12. Or.... etc. In other words, get a big one and a small one, both 8 ohm.
24.
That's not really how it works though because the whole instrument works in harmony so you just play the riff in a new position that is less of a stretch, You don't need to go all the way down the neck to grab a 2nd octave Eb for example because you can play it in position from the standard tuning that just dropping the E string won't allow and tuning BEAD is ok unless you want the 1st, 2nd and 3rd octave in one riff.
You try playing Hysteria at fret 4 on the B string* !!! I'm sure there are people who can, just as I am sure that I can't *assuming your band is detuned by 1/2 step and you have a standard tuned 5...
25. I was just wondering ... is a 5 string the answer to the inconvenience of drop tuning? If you have a standard tuned 5 you may lose the ability to play open strings (esp if you tune down one semitone) which would affect playability of many riffs enormously. One alternative could be to get a second 4, and keep one in standard while the other is detuned. Another approach could be to use detuners like hipshot ones on the strings you detune, so it's easy to switch from one tuning to the other, although you might get intonation issues this way. Neither of these need one of those 5 string things at all!
