There are 3 books in this series: https://www.basslinepublishing.com/product/the-bass-guitarists-guide-to-reading-music-beginner-level/ I found them very useful when learning to read music. I also bought a bunch of exam example pieces for Double Bass and Trombone and just ignored any mention of bows and slide position. Like this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/1860960340/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 The secret about reading is to do little and often. You'll make far more progress doing 10 mins a day rather than 90 minutes in one sitting at the weekend. The brain needs the repetition to work - just like any other language. A difficulty in learning to read well is going back to older pieces that you already know - are you reading or remembering them? So books of short sight reading tests with dozens of example makes sure you are reading and not remembering. Good luck with your studies! Being able to read really does open up the instrument and gig opportunities. I didn't bother for years and then got a gig with a Big Band (20+ horns / reeds / piano / drums etc) and I was so out of my depth. I was the one who always said "I'll take the music home and have it nailed by next week" rather than being able to play it there. I didn't like being the odd one out! I did 6 years with that band and by the end got quite competent.... mostly in flat keys due to all the transposing instruments! I'm still rubbish at reading the sharp keys!

Sterling by Music Man… Joe Dart model by stealth?

Dibs! -
they are 50s P bass pickups in a J shell, and hum cancelling. Anyone tried them? Or know of a J sized alternative?

Sandberg Lionel is lovely.

I’d love to try the flats but as they appear to be at least a nickel based alloy I won’t risk the money. Nickel allergies suck.

I'm very pleased with it. Good full sound, more than enough volume. The HS7 is passive cooled so no fan noise either. The only thing I'd mention is that as with most monitors the cones are not protected. So be aware of children and pets!

How old are your oldest strung bass strings
fretmeister replied to SH73's topic in General Discussion
I think my oldest set of flats are about 3 or 4 years old. La Bella DTF. So they've got a good 15 years left in them. My oldest set of rounds is only about 6 months old - trying some Elixirs for the first time. -

I have to say, I really liked that tune on the youtube link. -
Personally I find the X series EMGs to be a lot better than the regular ones for Precision types. Just sounds more open to me. https://www.emgpickups.com/bass/extended-series/35p4x.html

A question about 5-string Stingray neck profiles

Just the 4s. -
Holy Necro thread Batman! For some reason I thought about the Players School today. What happened to it? It seems to be 100% online now, and nothing like it used to be. I always fancied doing one of their short courses in person.

Cable ties, or remove the rubber bit on the bottom. For some pedals - like Boss - you can buy metal only replacement plates for only a few quid.
-
Put it last in the chain so the di can be used as a di if needed. Put an envelope filter, octave, compressor and maybe a drive in front. Job done.

What cabs do you play for what style of music?
fretmeister replied to Bassy's topic in Amps and Cabs
BF X10 series are pretty much Ampeg inspired and will handle anything an Ampeg can. I've used a One10 for everything. An SVT sound has been used by everyone from Duck Dunn to Jason Newsted, with and without other fx. I find those cabs work really well with Darkglass and EBS drive pedals and with fuzz, although I'm not much of a fuzz user for bass, at least not without a blend. -
A question about 5-string Stingray neck profiles
fretmeister replied to tauzero's topic in Bass Guitars
USA Sterling 5 used to have the same neck as the USA Stingray 5. I don't know if that is still the case. -
Last time, my band all bought parts of the PA, equalled out as best we could. So 1 person bought the desk, someone else bought the FOH speakers, another bought the monitors etc etc. Then if someone goes they can take their bit with them. Depreciation is their problem on the bit they own, or the remaining members can offer to buy that element if they want to. As it happens that band folded completely and everyone just took their bits. I had the FOH speakers and stands. As I was using a Yamaha P5000S power amp as my bass power amp at the time I had some fun setting them up in my house for use with music and TV! I eventually sold them when I realised that was easier than divorce.

Probably only those who also sing. Sting McCartney Lemmy Mark King But even then... would they know those people were actually bassists? And would anyone under 40 know who Mark King is? It's all age related. My kids are 18 and 21 and have put up with me talking about bassists for their entire lives. They are also musicians themselves, and they only knew who Sting was from his cameo in "Bee Movie". As famous as The Beatles / McCartney is we have to remember this from 2015:

What's the deal with Harley Benton/Thomann?
fretmeister replied to neil___lien's topic in General Discussion
They have a popular product. They cannot instantly hire a new production line in the far east if they are in full use, and I'm sure they've done the maths to decide whether they want to fund the building of a new factory. Rapid expansion kills more companies than careful restraint. Sometimes purposely keeping supply a bit low keeps the used values up and that in turn gives the product a better reputation and makes it more desirable. If you want one, order it and at least be in the queue. -

Context is everything. Big band / orchestra / any large band sitting down to play - absolutely fine. Last minute dep gig - also absolutely fine. Non-sitting / high energy / intimate, personal show where the singer absolutely has to connect with the audience - then NO NO NO! It ruins the connection. Even a singer closing their eyes and really feeling the music (or at least faking feeling the music) keeps that connection. Reading lyrics, and even worse - page flipping during a tune - ruins that for me completely. In that sort of show all the other musicians have learned their parts. The singer should do the same. There is nothing more lame than the crowd knowing the words better than the singer.
