Are you a fan of the FANNED FRET BASS ?
fretmeister replied to Bass4real's topic in General Discussion
I've had two, a Dingwall ABZ5 with 37-34 inch scale and an Ibanez with 32-30. I didn't find any tonal advantages at all and as at the time I was playing in a big band with transposing instruments and I needed the low C and F quite a lot I found that quite an annoying stretch over the course of a gig. I'm glad I tried them, but ultimately they are not for me. -
Yeah, but I recently quit my band so it would just be for the lounge at the moment!

Well, I’ve had it for a little over a month and I’m still loving it. I’m doing a lot less EQ fiddling than I was with my old cabs, most of the time I’m leaving the EQ at the 12 O clock position apart from reducing the bass when I turn it up louder. I doubt I’ll ever need a second cab to have a vertical 4x10 but it would look very cool….

Whole Lotta Rosie. AC/DC. I was on guitar. Would have been in about 1989 maybe 1990.

I got the guitar version as I play both and the clean amp with a compressor is fine for bass. The bass specific version has a drum machine though. I’m playing way more now as it’s so convenient.

Boss Waza Air headphones. Amazing things.

Congratulations! -
Nah - that's exactly why phasers are so good.

Very nice! Nice and light too. I really must try one. I only have 1 long scale left now.

There are loads of great options these days. Barefaced, Mark Bass, GR. They all sound a bit different. I've recently come back to Mark Bass after many years with Barefaced. I'm very happy with it - I got one of the new 102 Energy cabs. I was going to get a pair and do a vertical 4x10 but one is plenty loud enough.

The amp sounds good. The advert writers / director need to have their skin removed and then their flesh covered in jam, and then termites set on them.

J all the way! He must be a drummer.

When I get strings for a 5 I tend to buy a 4 string set and then a separate B in a slightly heavier gauge than would have come with a set. Just to get a slightly stiffer B and have less movement and rattle. Seems to work for me.

I think the thing that shall not be mentioned was crap as well - but VAT was going on a purchase either way. Looking at non-Vat prices abroad is not a true comparison. Most of the time the savings just aren't worth the hassle.
-
Item, add the shipping. Then add 20% vat to that. Then the duty (about 4%), and then finally the courier charge for dealing with the customs paperwork. Usually about £15-£20 You won’t get any surprises if you assume 30% over the item price. Probably be a little lower.

I never measure heights. Every bass is different and I set it up by feel and just tweak until it’s right.

Weight Balance Comfort Playability. Colour / looks don't matter to me at all.

The Short Scale Bass Appreciation Society!

I've got £130 of Aguilar pickup in a £100 Jim Deacon P bass, and an EMG P-X in another one of them. One of them also has £100 of Hipshot Ultralites too. The other will get the same when I find some money. I put £300 of Aguilar DCB 6 string pickups into an Ibanez medium / short fan fret EMG J set with BQS into a Sandberg TT4 Superlight. But the best fun I ever had with a pickup swap was firstly swapping pickups in an EBMM Stingray 5 - putting in a set of EMG MM5TW, then taking that out and turning the bass into a Precision (Aguilar narrow spaced P5), then into a PJ with stacked knobs.... but the very best bit of that process was posting on the official EBMM forum about it... The response from the fan boys was epically predictable. And it got more hilarious as they became more unhinged when they realised I just didn't care they were "offended" by what I did with my own instrument. Happy days. -

I've changed the pickups in almost every bass I've ever owned. Especially the Fenders. Most of my basses end up with EMGs or Aguilar. The Sandberg P pickup is a high quality unit. Zero hum. Well potted. Solidly made. It is higher output than almost every passive pickup I've ever tried over the years - in fact it might even give the Dimarzio Relentless some competition in the output stakes. That was the issue for me - I was playing in a Jazz Big Band. I wanted a vintage toned / traditional sounding pickup for my Lionel. That's why I changed it. I put in an Aguilar AG4P 1960s wind pickup. I could have got the same tone area buy putting in a Fender pickup as well, but the polepieces on Fender P pickups stick out and annoy me beyond reason. The Aguilar's polepieces are very slightly lower than the surrounding plastic so I never get any string on pole noises. When a customer puts in an order for a Sandberg they can specify any pickup they want. Some cost more, others less. I thought the Sandberg VS pickup sounded better than the Relentless for a high output P, but neither was what I was looking for in the end. No concerns about quality / value at all. Just a matter of taste. -
It's so specific to the bass and the amount of relief in the truss rod I'm not convinced it can be a set series of measurements. You might even have a slightly high fret somewhere.
