1.
Sure, possibly/probably .. However having had a mallet fracture in my right hand and now suffering from trigger thumb in my left hand, I do have lots of sympathy.. I've managed to play around these conditions. but the interim period is really frustrating..
What is trigger thumb ??
Yes...possibly, though the OP could be pressing down on the fretboard too hard using his thumb on the back of the neck. Likewise, he could be pressing down too hard with his thumb on the pick up when plucking. I do agree with seeking medical advice.
That's exactly what i meant and have suffered this personally on both thumbs. Remedy for me from fellow BC'ers was to turn the amp up and play lighter. That certainly sorted my issue.
Just turned 55 Dave
I know some health conditions are not specifically age related but at our age (I'm 56) it can have an influence on what is happening. Did it just start all of a sudden ie was it there before you started the gig. If no other signs before hand then its possibly just strain on the joints. I would suggest GP as he can do checks for athritis etc and will take blood samples to determine if its rhuematic or arthritis. I've also had the tests and came back ok. I couldn't move my finger joints and thumbs for approx 4hrs following morning. Doc examined my hands and said hands or joints will feel warm to someone else's touch if its rhuematic and reckoned it was a strain and should clear in few weeks. Took a bit longer but he was right enough. Blood tests confirmed. Don't put it off as either of these conditions can be treated early to prevent inflamation and joint damage. Dave
2. Is it possible you are maybe physically playing too hard. I mean that you are getting into the music and anchoring your thumb harder to allow more pressure with your fingers on the strings. I used to play very hard on my strings and would get aches on my thumbs but taking advice form BCers i eased off a bit and all is well. Would agree with others above to get it checked out with GP. What age group are you out of curiosity. ? Dave
3. Prefer his Gabriel work too. Def an inspiration on bass. His standard 4 string work is amazing let alone the stick bass playing. Not so keen on the finger stick thing tho. I find it a bit messy. Dave
4. Handy to know as they are doing fantastic deals on Sanberg basses starting at £1100 for VM versions. Their Markbass kit seems to be pretty cheap too. Dave
5. Anything by "boy bands" or "girl bands" for that matter and to make sure i don't get pulled up for being sexist. Dave
6. I've used Join My Band, Bandmix, Gumtree and local rehearsal studios will have a notice board with ads for musicians, Jam sessions in local pubs, Basschat wanted section a good place to start.. Sometimes its just people you know or friends on Facebook looking for someone. Good luck and hope you find the right people. Dave
7. I went from Ampeg SVT4 Pro to the Markbass 12" combo & ext cab. I loved the tone of SVT but its a bit on heavy side. Markbass rig is light and easy to carry, has a reasonably warm sound for a Class D and to me sounded more like the Ampeg than other lightweight amps i've had or tried. I did try out a Markbass 4x10 cab with their Nano Mark using a Precision deluxe and the tone was very impressive, very full, rich and loud if needed. Try looking at Musik-Produktiv website for some pretty good Markbass prices. 2nd hand Genz Streamliner is a nice little head with tube pre-amp. Good luck with search. Dave
8.
Read the thread title again.
PMSL only just got that brilliant.
9. You managed to get pics loaded ok then Bass looks great. Jazz looks cool too. I wasn't using a strap when playing it in shop so didn't really notice the weight or feel it was an issue but i'm used to heavier basses like my Warwick Thumb and Overwater 6er. Ordered the Surf Pearl version from GAK at great discount as mates son works there altho Guitar Guitar did offer at a further discount less than £800 to be fair. Nice to know friends of friends i guess. Didn't really ramp up the bass in the shop but found that just a little boost of any EQ was sufficient for me thru the shops Markbass head and 4x10. Depth and clarity between the P & J pick ups as required. Thanks for posting the NBD as its certainly put me at ease buying on line without trying it. Mates son will check the bass over before posting on to me anyways so all should be great. Let me know how you get on gigging the bass. All the very best Dave
10.
I won 6 tickets too. I'm looking forward to it. I just need to decide who I going to take along. My wife has the Holiday Inn Express booked as she works for the group and get staff rates for peanuts.
Decided to give it a miss because of the distance. Doesn't work for us Dave
11.
Mine arrived today. I might do proper NBD if I ever learn how to post pictures but suffice to say I couldn't be more chuffed with it. Great range of sounds from modern to classic and weirdly (because I didn't feel like I was struggling with my other basses) it feels really easy to play, I was expecting the usual period of adjustment I normally experience when playing a new bass, but it just clicked instantly. I hope you are similarly delighted with yours. Edit: Mine didn't come with any instructions and I couldn't find the manual online, in case you have the same experience, as far as I can tell from my experiments, from left to right the controls are volume, pan, bottom stacked knob is bass, topped stacked knob is mids and the last knob is treble. I reserve the right to be completely wrong about any/all of those deductions.
Yep you got that wrong a wee bit. The stack is bottom is bass boost / cut with top stack being treble boost and cut. The end pot is a mid boost / cut but i think it has a greater level of boost or cut. Have to admit the one in the shop did feel very natural too and just right balanc an tone wise. Looking forward to it arriving now. Just for info to help load pics. Select the "MORE REPLY OPTIONS" button at the bottom of your comment reply box and it will open up to more choice. At the bottom there's a CHOOSE FILE button that will take you to your own PC files or photographs. Select the photo you want to load and click OPEN. Then select the ATTACH THIS FILE button and the link will appear on your comment page. When you save post the pic should appear in the comment box. Hope that helps as i would like some pics of your bass posted. You have no excuse now Enjoy the bass Dave
12.
I've literally only had mine a few hours and I'm still getting to grips with the controls but I would say if it does have a tone control on passive it's very subtle as no matter how much I fiddle with various pots, I'm not hearing any difference. Having said that you can get a similar effect to a tone control in passive mode by panning between the two pickups.
Ordered the Surf Pearl one today from GAK. Delivered next week. Let me know how you get on with yours. As far as i know its predecesor didn't have the switch and was permanently active mode but with controls flat gave you same tone as passive mode ? Will watch the Overwater VID to see what it says. Certainly my Warwick has no tone control in passive mode so this is pretty much same. Still a great bass tho. Dave
13. Decided to go for the Surf Pearl Deluxe precision. On order due next week.
14. On my Jazz bass i measure the length of E string to just past the D post and the put a 90 degree bend using pliers. Put string thru pliers and hold it then bend the end downwards to 90 degrees. I then cut the end of the string to approx 20-30mm depending on depth of the centre hole thru the post ensuring the string bend sits near the top of the post and the string is wound below from there to ensure last turn before heading to nut is at the bottom of the post. Usually the G and D string don't need cut. I use D'addario nickel strings 40-100 I've never had any issue with string slip. Its first i've heard of it especially when you've got years of experience yourself. Dave
15.
Via Amazon last year.
Will check via Amazon. Did everything go okay with it ie any hidden charges. ? Dave
16. Has anyone bought a bass from Musik Produktiv. They are offering Sandberg basses at circa £1100 with free shipping. ? Dave
17. Had a quick play with one of these today and was very impressed. The bass has an active / passive switch but doesn't appear to have any tone control in passive mode. Does anyone have one and can clarify before i look at buying. There's no mention on the Fender website. Dave
18. Tried the Deluxe PJ today and found it very well made and a nice all round bass. My only negative being no tone control when used in passive mode which seems a bit odd. I would have to say that in active mode with everything flat it sounds same as passive tone. You can still sweep between pick-ups tho. That precision depth is just so impressive. Didn't get a chance to try the Squier today but will next time i'm in. I was offered an equivelant Sanberg to try and altho i tried their 5 string few yrs ago and found the neck wasn't to my liking this 4 string VM (P/MM) and the TM (J/MM) versions were very impressive and had more tonal range than the Fender. The necks were pretty similar altho i did find the TM rosewood neck very comfortable. Only issue with the Sandbergs they were both reliced and i grudge paying full price for a well worn bass that has had extra work done compared to normal finish. Fair price difference tho with Fender at £850 and the Sandberg circa £1700. (i can get these basses cheaper at Bass Direct) Not sure they are worth the extra tho. That Fender did feel good. Gonna have a ponder on this before actually buying. For those that have ordered a Fender Deluxe (Mex) you won't be disappointed as i tried few of them and they all felt pretty good to me. Standard set up which was ok for me. Pick-ups were maybe a little too close to the strings being my only concern but nothing major there. Still need to compare against the Squier basses tho. Dave
19.
If your'e talking about one of these... http://www.gear4musi...OntQaAujF8P8HAQ ...Then as coincidence would have it, I'll be finding out whether it's a goodun or a baddun within the next couple of days.
Yes that is the very beast only in sunburst with maple neck. Let me know what you think or have you already tried one. Dave
20. I'm easy, have both and never really give it much thought. If i use my passive basses i adjust the amp as required or needed. If i use my active basses i use both the amp or bass EQ as required. I'm more interested in whether i like playing the bass. Dave
21. A lot will depend on what the dealer has in stock but just to get things right as regards the Squier basses :- JV is the one to look for. CV is the next "best" bass. VM is the 3rd best bass However try them all to see what fits best. I'm really looking for a PJ active set up for all round tonal possibilities and the Deluxe Fender altho being Mex seems to have all that altho its down to indivivual bass as to whether its gonna be a good un or a bad un. As advised many times by BC'ers TRY before you BUY. I can only guess the Squier i've seen advertised is one of the sought after Japanese ones. Dave
22. I need to try some more Squier basses. I tend to overlook them as "just copies" and i know that literally is Fender snobbery but having lived a long time and remember when copies were pretty poor its just kinda stuck in my mind that things haven't really changed that much. I'm heading into Glasgow tomorrow as i'm interested in the Fender Deluxe Precision but think i'll give some Squiers a try too to see what i'm missing here. I'm not looking to ridicule anyone for the price they are asking for any bass they are selling but it did make me wonder why a Squier is worth over £800 when a new Fender Deluxe (Mex) is typically selling at £853 with standards selling for good bit less. I've only recently seen the adverts so the basses haven't actually sold at that price yet. It was a serious query as to why a 2nd hand "copy" is worth more than an original. I guess Fender is the easy target for that question. Pretty sure if it were a different manufacturer like Warwick or similar then copies or what we regard as "cheaper" models of same range would never sell for more than the original. Dave
23. Recently on various sites incl BC i've seen some Squire basses sell for same price or more than a Fender original bass. Some are selling for more than a new Fender. Are the Squier basses that good. I tried one yrs ago and thought they were pretty impressive. Is it just snobbery to buy the Fender rather than the Squire ? Dave
