Does anyone actually use their B string?
dmccombe7 replied to LITTLEWING's topic in General Discussion
Use it in the recording studio mainly because the guy i'm doing the bass work for likes the low B string depth. Other than that i never use my 5 or 6 strings in a band situ. I def prefer my Jazz 4 string. Dave -
If i was nearer i would be in more often and probably a good thing i'm 290 miles away. I did visit few yrs back looking for a 5 stringer and ended up with my Dingwall NG2 which is a great bass to have in the arsenal. I found the guys very helpful in the shop. No issues at all. I left feeling happy and content and having just driven 290 miles that wasn't an easy thing to achieve especially with the prospect of driving back home in same day. Dave

Me neither

I had a Peavey 5 string cheaper range and the B string was really nice on it. 34" length neck thru. Its as good as my Dingwall NG2 or my Overwater Custom 6er. Ranging from Under £500 for the Peavey to circa £3k for the Overwater and the B strings sound good on them all. Dave

worked ok for me earlier today. Dave

Hope you don't mind but i've shared your Youtube clip on my FB page too. Gotta get more airplay up here in Scotland. Too good to keep down south. Dave

Done. on pre-order. Few of the other bands mentioned on same page have played the Ivory Blacks gig altho its a fair jaunt from South Wales but you never know ? Dave
-
And a mention on BC when touring up in Scotland areas. Currently Ivory Blacks in Glasgow has a few Prog bands playing usually 2 bands on the night. Pay for the hire of the venue (i think its £150 and tickets at door or thru ticketmaster. Holds 200-300.) Good luck

Can we buy the album anywhere yet ? Had a look on the band FB page but don't see anything other than its off to be mixed down back in October. Dave

Nope I'm with you there. 👍

Unfortunately my race is nearer its end than beginning but i'm enjoying it more now than i ever did as a teenager into my 20's and 30's. Its more relaxed now i think. You are 100% correct. Its never been a race for me as long as i was having fun that's all that mattered to me. Dave

Well done bassbiscuits but you'll need to change your TAG now to simply "biscuits" Its good to see that you've kept yourself involved in the music scene so all credit to you sir. Wishing you every success and if you are happy with what you do then you can't really ask for more. Dave

Have to say my band notice the difference when i use my own gear or studio gear or even when i change from Jazz to P/J bass. P/J provides more depth. Same goes for my own amp. Dave

This springs to mind now

Last band had Alto gear and it was pretty good. We put keys thru it too. Can't remember if it was 12's or 15's in the tops with subs as well. Dave

Think i've seen a VID clip of you guys doing that song. Excellent. I'm a huge Bowie fan altho more his earlier material and the last album i liked. For some odd reason the last album reminds me of Man Who Sold the World album but not sure why. Dave

Steamy Windows covered by Tina Turner. Original Tony Joe White. Rainy Night In Georgia covered by so many but original again T.J.White Was ManWho Sold the World single a hit for Bowie or did Lulu have the bigger hit with it. Hush by Deep Purple originally written by American composer and musician Joe South

Our drummer just bought a new QSC rig. He plays in a punk covers band as well as our Glam Rock covers band. He's covering all bases with it with 12" tops 215 tops and 18" subs. He can use individually or any combination of them to suit the venue. Using keys i would be looking for something that will take the low end quite easily. I've seen some bands with just one sub and two raised 12's or 15's and that works for most venues. We looked at Mackie, Yamaha, RCF but he knows people in the business and he got a great deal on the QSC Dave

That's how i was told to fit them when i started playing in 1976 and i've always done it that way.

It was mainly used to get my timing right. I can't remember what was in between that and another song i liked Mississipi by Pussycat i think it was. I've probably still got the music sheets from my lessons back in 76

I got rid of my smaller TE bass head and 2x10 cab cause it just didn't do it for me at rehearsals never mind gigs. I just couldn't get a nice tone from it. That was last year. I kind of inherited it in the studio from bands previous bass player who went to NZ. Since then i've settled with Mesa Mpulse and Mesa 212 cab and its like night and day between the TE and Mesa. The Mesa feels like the tone is surrounding me and its a warm smooth bass tone compared to a thin weak TE tone even using the head with a different cab didn't help. Same bass was used. I do however remember playing the TE 410 combo with my Warwick in 80's and remember being very impressed with that combo but its so long ago i can't remember how it really sounded. I'm sure it had depth and clarity but that's the sound i was aiming for back then. It was a common bass tone to have doing covers. These days i like valve tubiness and warmth in my tone. Old skool tone.

Probably the guitar part for Smoke On The Water done on bass. My first bass lesson was Little Ole Wine Drinker Me by Dean Martin. Dave

I can understand where you are coming from. I've done the opposite. I only played in bands i enjoyed the music. Heavy or Classic Rock, Prog, Jazz Rock, Funk / Blues based rock, 70's covers bands and now Glam Rock. Done the covers and the originals bands and even tried the function band thing but it just wasn't for me. I couldn't get used to young kids dancing about on dance floors. Too weird for me. I've tried things and realised it wasn't for me. I play bass as a hobby and my main concern is that i'm enjoying the songs first and that the band members are easy to get along with and especially no ego's. Why not look for guys that want to play rock with you. No idea what age you are but i played in a Funk / Blues rock band last year doing Doobies, Allmans, Tony Joe White, and some other bands i'd never heard off but the 2 guitarists and the singer were all 70 when i joined. (I was 57 at that time so i was the youngster ) Its never too late to get the band you always wanted. Dave

I heard Steve Williams at the Moffat Bass Bash few yrs back using his Jazz bass fitted with Bart's and it sounded warm and really quite sweet. Enough so that i nearly considered changing my Geddy Jazz pick-ups to Barts but in the end decided i quite liked what i had. Dave

Did the Ibanez basses have Bartolini pick ups too ?
