1. Jon Letts has a singlecut 4 string on his website, I've played it and it's about the lightest best balanced and most killer sounding bass ever, if I needed a 4 string I would have bought it on the spot. I would post a link but I'm on my phone and it won't let me. Matt
2. my midgets were ordered on the 15th(ish) of December and I'm still waiting, it is agonising though, i keep checking my email for a delivery tracking number (checking every hour or so) and every time a fed-ex van turns up at work i sit and watch in case 2 cab sized boxes appear. Matt
3. have you tried asking Brian at The guitar shop? (off high bridge) he's usually got a few pukka used gibson ones and they might just slip under your top price bracket, he's often got other nice semi-acoustics too at very sensible prices. I couldn't afford too much when i bought my 335 copy but managed to snag a mid 90's tanglewood cs-2 (chicago) a couple of years ago for 230 quid from a mates dad, really lovely guitar at bargain prices (much better than the current tanglewood chicago's) matt
4. a quick scan of the classifieds throws up nothing under 100 quid but a few tasty heads for about 150, any of these would do the job brilliantly (and would reward a better cab one day as well) they would make great backups for your bh250 as well if you're allowed to borrow school equipment. http://basschat.co.uk/topic/199978-fs-gallien-krueger-700rb-l150/ http://basschat.co.uk/topic/175741-yamaha-bbt500h-amp-head-l150/ http://basschat.co.uk/topic/199671-ashdown-abm-evoll-fs-l15000/ http://basschat.co.uk/topic/181750-marshall-mb450h-l160ono-delivered-fsft/ i have no connection to any of the sellers (that i know of) Matt
5. roadie wrap for me, i've got leads still going strong from when i started playing (about 1997 i think) i also love the velcro ties but have taken to making them myself, you can buy double-sided velcro tape (B+Q) which i then fasten to the lead by looping it round and putting a jeans stud through it, then carefully coil the cable and wrap round the tape, cut to a suitible length, one roll of the velcro is about 6 quid i think but it'll make loads of ties and each one is exactly the right size and can't go missing, i found that some of the ready made ones were 2 bits of velcro stuck together and in one or two cases the glue unstuck then smeared itself all over the cable. if anyone cares then i'll take a picture or 2 tonight to demonstrate (might even make set of pics showing the process if someone Really wants it) Matt
6. They are fairly rare, our guitarist has one and I've not seen many other ones up for sale, the price is a bit heart stopping though, our guitarist paid 60 quid for his and it's in great nick and came with a stand, a strap and a lead. Matt
7. Definitely look at Letts, his prices are on his website but he's been known to offer discounts to basschat members. Matt
8. i'm taking notes here, i play in a 3 piece with my 2 best friends (mainly just for the shear joy of it) we play a mix of blues/rock/indie and have found that as long as we admit that we can't play all the parts almost any song can be done in our own style (quite ofetn ends up sounding a bit reggae in the pracices for some reason) , the main exception is the soul stuff which just sounds wrong without a horn section, we're tried but we just can't get it to work. Matt
9. i have a one in one out policy for gear for the simple reason of space. we're lucky to have some disposable income at the end of the month and the general rule is that if we can find space for a new toy and don't require a loan or finance to buy it then it's allowed. when my new letts 5 string arrives then the Yamaha 5er will be sold, and i'm going to sell off the p and j bitsa's because i simply don't use them. the barefaced midgets will displace my old ashdown cab and then all will be peaceful untill i get a eub (which i think i can store under the spare bed when i'm not using it/practicing) Matt
10. just so there's an answer here for future searches I've just got my gauges out and measured the threads on my Schaller straplocks and they are indeed M10x0.75 matt
11. 4 or 5 strings doesn't really bother me either way! having different models would seem like a good idea to me, there are enough people on here that 4/5/6 versions would be popular. is there any intention to actually have these made? a limited edition run by one of the better far east manufacturers would be fun, if the price was low enough i'd find a way to stump up for one (and smuggle it into my house!) i'm waiting for the pickup debate to start raging so i can suggest some kind of swappable/ moveable pickup design, maybe with a tool-free swappable preamp/control system. Matt
12.
Hi Matt If you intend to trade an item in the basses/amps/cabs/fx/eub forums you'll be asked to enter a trade value. As the 'any items' forum is for subscribers only, you can put anything you like in there as stating a trade value over £50 won't matter - you'd have paid already. Does that make sense? Cheers! ped
yup that all makes perfect sense, Thanks. Matt
13. thankyou for the heads up, it all seems very sensible and totally reasonable. one small question, the any items forum, will we be allowed to ask for trades? i've got a bike gathering dust in the spare room that i'd happily trade for something bass-related, and would wanted ads be allowed for non-bass/music related items? Matt
14. +1 For the Bass Doc, there should be a banner across the front page "For ALL your pickguard needs - Call the Bass Doc!" Matt
15.
I got this on ebay and its really good quality. The cable is massive! http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/370734143632
That's one of obbm's cables, they're the finest available. Matt
16. i don't play myself but have a friend who's very highly talented, and he's got a Korg SV1, it's a mightly impressive bit of kit, if you can get one with your budget then i'd say go for it, the sounds it is capable of are fantastic, my friend has sold most of the rest of his keyed instruments and has just got the sv1 and i think a Korg triton for making weird noises with, the sv1 is the one that gets taken to gigs though! matt

PSU Help?

hello, bit of a bump here, has anyone used one of the 2 into 1 cables to get 18v with a H/B Jr? i need 18v for my MXR Blowtorch and this looks like a good option as i don't have that many pedals to power (blowtorch, mxr super comp, tc polytune and a bassballs nano) does it come with the 18v cable or will i need to order one separately? Matt
18. i don't subscribe to the n+1 formula, for me the correct number is s-1 where s is the number that would cause the breakdown of your relationship/bank account (delete as appropriate) my current collection is in double figures but only about 6 are basses, a double bass has been veto'ed on space grounds which i can understand as our house is already pretty crowded with other stuff, an EUB could be squeezed in though! Matt
19. have you taken the old speaker out yet? it should have either 8ohm or 4 ohm marked on it somewhere, it should be a blue marvel speaker (standard fitment) for a replacement the celestian eight 15 is a good option if you need 8ohms or jensen make one called the mod 8-20 which is available in either 4 or 8 ohms. eminence might make one too, what you should be loioking for is a speaker that is marketed by the maker as a guitar speaker, beytween 20 and 30w rating should be fine. Matt
20. the '77 Precision in my avatar is my main bass and the one that i'm never selling, it only gets put down if a song needs a 5th string, i can see it being usurped by my incoming Letts 5 string though but i'll probably still use it a fair amount, i'm thinking i'll thin the herd when the Letts arrives, might get down to just 2 basses but more likely i'll just sell some and then buy some different ones! Matt
21. Hello, welcome to the forum! i have a feeling that an off the shelf scratchplate would be pretty difficult for that bass as the pickup combination isn't that common and it appears to be left handed. Luckily you have joined the correct forum as we have The Bass Doc on call, who is an expert at custom scratchplates, break out the ceral box and some scissors and work out what shape you want, make a template then send him a message, if you happen to be in the north east of england then you can deal in person but if not then you just send him the template in the post and he'll make a scratchplate and post it back. His work is totally top notch and his prices are very reasonable, i've had one madefor a cheap bass and i've seen them fitted to basses with price tags in excess of £1000 and they are fantastic quality. Matt
22. can't quite believe this thread has made it to 14 pages, (edit make that 15!) Steve, thanks for the original post i really liked it, then it all got a little silly (in both a bad and a good way) i loved the Etta James Track, it gives me goosebumps every time i hear it, Nigel/Silddx/Xilddx, I adored the Kit Richardson Track, i've ordered the EP and am listening to the download as i type this, totally amazing! i hope you're heading out on tour so I can catch you Live and buy you a Pint/Beverage of your choice as a thankyou for introducing me to an amazing artist! (the bass playing isn't half bad either ) Matt (oh and IBTL)
23. are you looking at new or secondhand? your budget would net you some serious kit from the classifieds here, and if weight isn't a problem then the range of heads, combos and cabs that you could consider is massive. and you could have the pick of almost any brand you can think of. the usual answer is to buy with your ears, try as many different combinations as you can, it's a shame that you missed the north east bass bash as you would have had the chance to try about a dozen different rigs (with your own bass) but you might find that local members will be happy to let you have a go with their rig at a practice room or in their own homes, some might even offer to bring the gear to you. Matt
