My blood is boiling just reading this. 😡 I always believe in total equality, unless someone is doing something above and beyond what the other band members are doing. In your case, it seems that you are all taking gear and equipment along to the jam nights, so you should all get an equal split. Personally, if this happened to me, I would be asking some serious questions.

I'm actually building two at the moment and I've already purchased the Kent Armstrong Hot Vintage P Bass Pickup Alnico for one of them, I've used this particular pickup before and they sound great, very much like the original Fender pickups. For the other one, I might take a punt on the Maida Vale Low Rider Alnico 4, £19.95 posted isn't a lot of money to lose if I find it's not for me.

I wanted an "all-in-one" solution, so I purchased the newly released Fender Rumble 800 2x10 Combo (not the "Stage" version), and I find it hard to believe that it only weighs 29 lbs. (13.15 kg), because it's definitely just a one-hand lift. I'm not in a band at the moment so I've not gigged it yet, but I have used it for jam sessions with friends and it sounds great, and would probably be plenty loud enough on it's own without the need for an extension cab.

Totally agree! I went to the Birmingham store around six months ago, I spent about ten minutes at the bass section, which as you say, is boring, expensive, and uninspiring, none of the staff could be bothered to ask if I needed any help, even though I was the only customer in the whole store at the time. I went there with money in my pocket to spend, but came away very disappointed.

So would these two different ways of wiring a P bass give tonal variations, or would they sound the same providing the same value cap was used in both?

I've wired quite a number of P basses over the years by following the instructions included with the pickups, or by searching online for wiring diagrams. I'm practically minded and can turn my hand at a lot of things, but I'm not technically minded, so my question is: Why are there so many variations when wiring a P bass? There are only two wires coming from the pickup, and only two pots, and yet there seems to be a variety of ways to do it. Here's an example of what I mean where the cap and wires are going to different lugs on the pots, etc.

I don't want to spend between £75 and £100 for a set of specialist nut files to only use them once, so is there anything else I could use to slot a nut? Although I guess that to do the job properly, then I would need the proper nut slotting files. Alternatively, any idea how much it would cost to get a luthier to do the job for me? Thanks in advance.

That's what baffled me, he was a regular driver for my address, and he would know that I usually leave the porch door unlocked if I was expecting a delivery or collection, why he didn't bother walking down the steps to the door after actually driving down my driveway to my house, still mystifies me. 🤔
