Pr Pringles and a moog, what more do you want?? 🤣

I'm playing this for a friend's degree show (all remotely recorded unfortunately) but decided to throw together a quick jam over the mad time signature. Featuring my JMJ Mustang and the 3 Leaf Audio Octabve mkiii Skip Step upload.mp4

I recently tidied away all of the crap that had accumulated on my desk from home working and made a very effective practice spot. I live in a one bed flat so my "studio" is also my living room... and my kitchen (behind where I took the photos from). Luckily I live alone so it's not a problem 🤣

I feel vindicated to know I'm not the only bass player who also loves Lego 😂 @binky_bass can we get a proper picture of your collection?? 😍

4-string with octave pedal instead of 5-string?
bassist_lewis replied to Caz's topic in General Discussion
Apologies if this has been mentioned before, but it might be relevant whether you play in one band or if you dep around with lots of bands. If you're with one band, then presumably the singer will sing each song in the same key every gig (though I have worked with singers who have changed the key in the same breath as calling the song!) so learning the song in a drop tuning is a bit of extra work at the front end, but you get to use the bass you like. However, if you dep around and play with lots of different singers who sing songs in all different keys, it might be easier to get a 5-string as when you change key all the shapes are more or less the same, just in a different position. -
Wise words from @Doddy. There are standard practices but really its about playing around and seeing what sounds you can get and want to keep. Two YT channels you should check out are That Pedal Show and The JHS Show. They're aimed at guitar players but pretty much everything they talk about is transferable to bass. One idea worth playing around with, put your filter after your delay. It means that each repeat triggers the envelope a little, which sounds pretty cool. Have fun!

I have a Fender JMJ Mustang with flats that gets 90% of the way there, and would certainly be good enough for playing live. However, when I do functions I tend to use my Callowhill, which has steels roundwounds on it, as I can get all the tones I need.

You make some good points

ANOTHER one to check out! 😍 I think that's what I'm going for, a barely there kind of overdrive.
-
how have I not seen this??? I'm glad someone did it!

Clearly very versatile! The size would be a problem though, I've got a Moogerfooger and a bunch of other pedals on my board that aren't going anywhere
-
hmm interesting... I'll check out the Harmonic Booster. Is that Lehle?

A great idea but I like dedicated pedals and building boards.

I've been considering what sounds I'll need for the functions when I'm back gigging and I decided some sort of pre-amp would be good for getting the Ampeg B15 sound for those old soul records, especially as I'm lucky enough to play in a soul band. I have a SolidGoldFX Beta which does a pretty good job but I've been hunting around and looked at the Darkglass Vintage Microtubes Deluxe. I'm well aware of Darkglass and what they do but they've always been sold as METAL overdrives. Every demo has someone playing a sick crushing riff about arguing with their mum, so I had written them off as not really my thing (don't get me wrong I LOVE metal, I just don't play it). But looking at the extensive tone shaping options on the Microtubes, it seems possible it could be more versatile than the demos make out. Has anyone used a Darkglass pedal to make more subtle, possibly even vintage-inspired sounds?

Beautiful wiring!! And a like the idea of mounting pedals underneath. I take that's an "Always On" pedal? -
It is not, it's a slab body. The contouring only came in in the early 70s, and all the new ones, including the Japanese ones from the 90s/early 2000s are based off of the 60s design. I would've thought Fender would be keen to reissue the 70s design as its more ergonomic, and looking at the increase in demand for Mustangs (judging by the prices), I expect they will do so in the next couple of years.

I too have been lusting after an old Mustang. The Bass Gallery has had a couple of beautiful ones up in January and February, and there's some on Reverb. I imagine it's as much, if not more, of a crap shoot finding one you like as any instrument/amp/pedal. However, you'll probably make your money back as there is a thriving market for them, and the prices are steadily increasing. I have a 2018 Fender JMJ Mustang and its a lovely instrument to play and it sounds great. If it's a measure of brand new instruments, then the standard is high! However, it's based off a 1966 Mustang, so it could be a measure of vintage Mustangs, in which case... vintage instruments are great. I haven't played any of the new Vintera ones, but the specs are nearly identical to the JMJ, and they're built in the same factory.

It never does! and that's the fun! The QuarterMaster is great, I can set up a multi pedal sound and switch straight into it. And the Moog colours the tone even when it's bypassed. The expandable pedal board looks like exactly what we all need!! -

I'm already looking at phasers, volume pedals and risers 😂 -

This has been months in the planning/saving. Finally got the power system and the board itself this week and spent a few hours last night putting it all together. I am aware the Quartermaster is squint, I'm still waiting on a Bright Onion Pedals patch bay to mount underneath so I can plug in and out from one side. This board will be subject to change without notice.
